I recently earned my PhD in Science and Technology Studies from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, where I studied the politics of environmental remediation at the Hanford Site (where the US made plutonium for weapons until the late 80's). It's a dangerous site. It's also dangerous to ask any graduate student about their dissertation, since we can go on for longer than the half-life of plutonium. Don't say I didn't warn you!I am not only obsessed with things that glow in the dark. I am also fascinated with the social sciences, history, literature, philosophy, and writing. My M.A. is in anthropology, and my B.A. is in Sociology. When I tutor, I work hard to help you figure out why all of these subjects are worthy of your passion and effort.I have taught first-year college students, as well as worked individually with thirteen undergraduates to plan, write, and revise their senior theses. My students have included undergraduate social science students as well as those pursuing engineering, science, and business. I have participated in environmental research programs with high school students, and helped to train student activists in places as different as Pullman, WA and Atlanta, GA.I'm excited to work with you, too!

I am currently a freshman at the University of Texas at Austin and pursuing a Bachelor's in Computer Science. In my free time, I enjoy coding for quantum computers and especially love to explore interesting math and science concepts. I have had 3 years of prior experience teaching groups of students as a part of the North South Foundation, with my expertise being in the sciences. My goal as a tutor is to not only to help my students learn a new subject but rather gain a fundamental understanding of the concept in an intuitive way. This has been my goal since I began high school due to many of the classes being taught as a place to just memorize facts and formulas - but I wanted to actually know the background behind them and see where things were derived from. I knew that there were others out there who had a similar mindset so I sought out ways in which I could teach subjects that I was passionate about to other students like myself.

I really enjoy working with others and providing people with more resources to become academically successful. Throughout this pandemic, I have seen the consequences of not being able to seek help in person such as feeling overwhelmed and not knowing who to reach out to. Therefore, I want to extend my help virtually to make up for the lack of face-to-face interactions.I am currently a second-year biochemistry major at the University of Texas at Austin, and I am also a pre-medical student. I'm a recent graduate from The University of Texas at Austin with a Bachelor of Science in Biomedical Engineering (Hook 'em Horns!). I've been involved with teaching K-12 for 3 years now during my college career and have had a passion for teaching ever since my first job in high school at a math tutoring company. I scored well on both the SAT and the ACT thanks to many prep courses for the SAT and adequate prep materials for the ACT. In high school, my favorite subjects were by far Math, Biology and Spanish, and I made sure to apply my love for those subjects through studying Biomedical Engineering with a Spanish minor. I have also scored well on the MCAT in hopes of going to medical school someday. My personal philosophy with teaching focuses on being personable. I'm still a child at heart and I believe that I should not have to sacrifice professionalism for having a silly personality. I also believe that being a tutor involves being relatable to my students and being understanding of both failure and success. There were many times that I failed in high school and college, and I am not afraid to tell my stories to help motivate my students. I also believe in breaking down concepts as much as possible and trying my best to understand how others understand concepts. I look forward to working with you and enjoying the privilege of watching your academic improvement!

After spending ten years away on the East Coast, I am excited to be home in Texas getting my PhD in Middle Eastern Literature at the University of Texas at Austin. I am previously a graduate of American University in Washington DC, with a BA in International Relations. After graduating, I spent two years in Istanbul, Turkey teaching academic Reading and Writing at a preparatory program at a private university. Upon returning to the United States, I worked for a hip new language school in Brooklyn teaching Spanish, French, and Arabic. I love sharing my passion for foreign language and literature, and I seized every opportunity to take my lessons outside of the classroom with Spanish scavenger hunts, French cheese tastings, and Arabic window shopping.Besides the new cultures and experiences that learning a foreign language brings, it helps improve reading and writing skills in your native language as well. Along with Spanish, French, and Arabic, I also tutor academic Reading and Writing. I believe that English and foreign language learning reinforce one another. Whether ordering baklava in Arabic, or answering vocabulary questions on the SAT, language is all about taking a step back and understanding the communicative tools you have to work with. When not studying medieval poetry, I love to bike around Austin and work on the mini-farm in our backyard, complete with chickens!

I graduated from The University of Texas at Austin in May 2016 and received a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology, with a sub-option of Neurobiology. I started tutoring 2011 while I was still attending high school, mainly for middle-school and high school math. I also have experience working with elementary school-aged children so I am used to breaking down larger concepts into more bite-sized pieces. My current focus is in the natural sciences, particularly in Biology, which most of my undergraduate education focused on. During my time as a college student, I went through many different trial-and-errors for academic success. I found that the most effective way to learn and memorize a large sum of information in a short time was to make the essential connections between the subject matters. I hope to teach in this manner, helping to connect the dots and impart these habits so that my students can continue to be successful in all academic ventures.

I'm a student at UT Austin and I really enjoy working with students and helping things finally click for them. I've worked with kids in places like Kumon and STEAM programs, so I'm used to explaining things in different ways depending on how someone learns. I try to keep tutoring relaxed and encouraging. A lot of students already know more than they think, they just need things broken down a bit differently or a little more confidence to work through problems on their own. That's usually what I focus on. I'm especially comfortable with math, reading, and test prep, and I like helping students build strategies they can actually use instead of just memorizing steps. My goal is to make sessions feel productive but not stressful.

I just graduated from the University of Texas-Austin with a B.A. in Psychology, a Business Foundations Certificate from McCombs, and a minor in German with a GPA of 3.92! I was a straight A student in high school as well, and took all advanced and AP classes. When I was at one of my high schools in Louisiana, the classes were all done online. I managed to finish all of the requirements for high school when I was only 14! Unfortunately, many of my classmates struggled without the presence of a teacher, and I began tutoring them. I tutored students from many different backgrounds in all subjects of high school for over 6 months, and greatly enjoyed it and would like to tutor again. Now, having just graduated with my undergraduate degree, I am looking to begin tutoring as a true mentor, and not as a classmate. I have always excelled in and enjoyed the classroom setting. I scored a 34 composite on my ACT and 2120 on my SAT, and would be happy to help with the challenges of preparing for standardized tests, as well as regular subjects for school. Through the use of your or your child's textbook/test prep materials and problems that I assign for practice, I will make sure that you or your child is fully equipped for success! Both learning and teaching provide me with a great sense of reward, and I am looking forward to tutoring (and learning from) you or your child.

I'm Jay! I'm currently going to college at the University of Texas at Austin. I am majoring in fine arts and I am also in the pre-medical program. Even though I'm not done with college, I have already published papers in the field of epigenetics since my freshmen year of college. Even though I consider myself to have an expertise in languages, I decided to teach areas in the field of natural sciences because those are the subjects that I am most passionate about.I was born in Taiwan; however, even before I learned how to speak, I moved to the States. Hence, my first language was English. In third grade, my parents decided to move back to Taiwan to aid in my education of the Chinese language. Of course, learning Chinese as a second language is as difficult as it sounds. With some hard work and the right learning strategies, I was able to get a good grasp on the language and even winning third place in a national writing competition four years after moving to Taiwan.Although I learned a new language during the time I was in Taiwan, I slowly lost my English speaking, writing, and reading abilities. When I moved back to the States in 9th grade, my English was not fluent enough to be put into a classroom with the other native speakers. I worked hard, and I was able to get out of a two-year ESL (English as a Second Language) program in just a semester.I have tutored students since I was in high school in English, Chinese, mathematics, and most subjects in the area of natural sciences. I don't want to just teach my students the subjects themselves. I want to teach them my strategies and SECRETS to learning quickly and efficiently. I am easy to reach and will provide fast responses. Hey there! My name is Nathaniel, and I graduated from UT Austin in 2016 with degrees in Biochemistry and Psychology. I've had over 8 years of tutoring experience in different areas, primarily in mathematics and the natural sciences. I began tutoring my mom's friend's children in algebra 1, algebra 2, and geometry while still in middle school. This is the point at which I realized the reward in helping others learn, inciting my passion for tutoring. I went on to continue assisting classmates in high school, ultimately tutoring around a dozen different students while in college. In fact, I even served as a teaching assistant my junior year, helping grade assignments. In my free time, I like to play sports, lift weights, and volunteer. I ultimately plan on attending medical school, aiming for admission in 2018. I'm open to many different physician specialties, but have found psychiatry, neurosurgery, and orthopedics the most interesting so far. Other fun facts about me are that I've been skydiving 25 times (certified), biked from Austin, Texas to Anchorage Alaska to raise money and awareness for cancer research as part of the UT organization Texas 4000, and worked at a haunted house this past October. My teaching approach is different from others in that I do not wish to instruct students as if they were in a class, but by putting it in terms that would resonate most with them. Thus, I strive to not only further your children's insight in a given subject area, but to also allow them to actually appreciate different subjects and how they relate to the world around them. I look forward to working with your child, and will hopefully hear from you soon!
