I am a third-year Ph.D. student in UT Austin's American Studies department. I received my B.S. in Media, Culture and Communication from NYU and my M.A. in Literary and Cultural Studies from Carnegie Mellon. As a lifelong student, I love to help others enjoy the process of learning and to see their hard work pay off! I'm currently teaching a writing course at UT with the theme, "Americans Abroad." Last year, I taught discussion sections for a UT American literature course, and previously I worked as a teaching assistant for classes on introductory academic writing, U.S. history, and American culture. I grew up speaking English and Spanish. I obtained my Bachelor's of Arts from the University of Texas in 2003. I majored in Spanish and minored in English. I also obtained my TESOL in 2018. I first started tutoring English when I was in college. I worked on campus in their tutoring center. I really enjoyed this. Next I worked as a Bilingual Substitute Teacher with the school district. I did this for many years and have extensive experience in many grade levels. For a while I also worked as a Spanish and Portuguese teacher for a language school. Recently, I have been teaching ESL online for almost three years. With smaller children I try to be more fun and engaging. I like to adapt to a students personality. I try to make sessions interactive to make the learning process interesting. This also helps reinforce student learning. For 1-1 sessions, this is relatively easy to do. For group sessions, I try to ask students if they understand, and I give them time to solve the problems that I present. From the biochemical reactions inside of our cells to the extreme biological adaptations of deep-diving sperm whales to the long distance migration of some birds, nature never ceases to amaze me. I enjoy tutoring in these subjects as stand-alone or as part of the MCAT exam. I use Python (with the Tensor Flow and Kera packages) and Jupyter Notebooks. I also use various tools in the cloud, and I set up billing alerts and cost constraints to ensure that I stay within my prescribed budget. I am also analyzing data such as my own Apple health data (XML format). There are many tools available for data analysis. I like using Microsoft Fabric along with the Azure Cloud, as it provides a good end-to-end solution.

More than twenty years ago, the year I was born, my father underwent a coronary artery bypass graft procedure and almost died due to unforeseen complications. My mother would tell me how lucky I was to have even met him. He has a twenty-five year history of poorly controlled diabetes, hypertension, and hyperlipidemia and throughout my childhood I witnessed firsthand the suffering that these comorbidities caused himand in effect, our family. I accompanied my father numerous times to the emergency department and doctor appointments then, and continue to do so. I called 911 and then rode along with him in ambulances as he complained of severe chest pain and dyspnea. Witnessing my dad being brought out on stretchers countless times made me feel helpless but motivated to investigate the intricacies of his diseases. In medical school, my curiosity for understanding these disease processes only grew as I learned about the complex interplay between comorbid pathologies. As an internal medicine resident, I will further dedicate my career to the physiology, treatment and management of patients suffering from these distressing, and often overlooked illnesses.During my internal medicine core and sub-internship, we dealt with patients with multiple comorbidities and non-communicable, chronic disease. For example, there was a fifty five year old African American man with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, diabetes mellitus, heart failure, uncontrolled hypertension and, chronic renal failure on hemodialysis who presented with shortness of breath and bilateral leg edema. I noticed the patient guarding the upper right side of his abdomen; I performed a complete physical exam on him, but focused on that. He had upper right quadrant tenderness on palpation, which I reported to my attending. I suggested that it could be congestive hepatopathy due to right-sided heart failure along with his bilateral leg edema, and that we should order an echocardiogram to evaluate his heart further. This showed that his ejection fraction had reduced significantly from his prior records to less than 35%. From speaking to the patient further, I gathered he had been skipping his furosemide dose because of increased urination, which he had not admitted to until now. As a team, we formulated a plan that involved patient education, optimizing his medication, and the placement of an AICD. I felt a sense of gratification, knowing my thorough physical exam, detailed history and, education on AICD usage helped improve this patient's management and quality of life. Experiencing how the interactions between these disease processes manifested in this patient ensures that me that there will always be more to learn. I experienced also, how important interactions with specialists such as endocrine, cardiology, pulmonology and nephology were, as they added depth to management to the patient. For me, he was a patient who typified my experience in internal medicine.In addition, I find internal medicine to be a very emotionally rewarding field, because of the moments of comfort a physician can provide, in critical moments. I recall, for example the hospital course of a sixty-year-old Caucasian female patient with cervical cancer and metastasis to the brain. She was refusing to eat and had no family to support her during this time. The attending, residents and nurses all had tried to convince her to eat but had little success. I imagined myself in her shoes and started to empathize some of the feelings she must have been experiencing. I sat by her bed, just to keep her company. After two hours, she eventually opened up to me and confessed that she was scared she was going to die and had given up on life. I began to spoon feed her banana pudding and I still remember her smile to this very day. Though I will have different availabilities with regard to time, as a resident, I know that I will strive to create the emotional space for such connections with patients in residency and afterwards.With the knowledge and experience I gain from your residency program, one day I hope to become a hospitalist and then pursue a fellowship in cardiology or endocrinology, so I may provide this specialized care that patients in urban areas so desperately need. I plan to take an active role in research during residency, specifically in cardiovascular health, and find a program that supports such endeavors with state of the art facilities. I also am interested in program with protected didactic time so that I may continue to advance my knowledge and develop my clinical skills in a structured manner. Having rotated at an urban hospital New York, I look forward to working in a similarly culturally diverse environment to provide the finest patient centered care, and learn the most from cases, while also serving an underserved, and marginalized population. It is with this vision I hope to be a great addition to your residency program and be given an opportunity to manage complicated patients, where once I was merely watching diseases progress in my father.

I visit my extended family in France as often as I can, but I am so happy to call Austin home. My dad always shares a story with me from when I was 5 years old. We were riding in the car and I was describing the scenery along the drive with such vivid vocabulary. He was so shocked to hear those type of words come out of such a young child's mouth. That always makes me smile and the more I think about it, it doesn't surprise me at all. I am a Biochemistry undergraduate at the University of Texas. In addition to my major, I research molecular and systems biology with a focus in genetic regulation of biological pathways.I am very passionate about science and math and frequently tutor in these subjects. My approach to tutoring these subjects is to allow the student to fully comprehend the logic behind the concepts. In order to do this, I frequently use pictures, diagrams, models, and physical representation of the process at hand. Hello! I am a Brazilian/American Francophile, who have been a language teacher (English/Portuguese/French) for over 25 years. I was educated at an International School and I have worked at various Berlitz Language Institutes around the world, including the Centers in Rio de Janeiro, Lisbon, Berlin and Austin, Texas. I now live in Florida. In the past, I also taught languages at Oil Rigs (Petrobras and TransOcean) off the Brazilian coast, teaching English to the Brazilian crew and Portuguese to the foreign one. That was super exciting and I got to ride a helicopter to go to work every two weeks! I have an Associate's degree in French ( I have lived in Paris and travelled to France various times) and a Bachelor's in History and Anthropology from the University of Texas. I am a former middle school math teacher turned stay at home mom. With my previous students and my own children, my favorite part about teaching is seeing a student's confidence boost as they gain understanding. With a desire to keep the lessons engaging, I hope to make learning fun!I graduated from the University of Texas at Austin with a degree in Marketing. From there, I became a 7th and 8th grade math teacher in Fort Worth. Then, I moved back to Austin to teach in 7th grade math in Del Valle ISD for 7 more years. I taught until I had my first child in 2010. Now that I am a mother of 3, I understand that connecting with a child first is very important. This connection helps maintain trust and keeps students motivated.Outside of teaching, I enjoy working out, traveling, trying new foods, reading, and going on adventures with my kids. My background is in teaching math but I also love teaching reading especially to younger children.

I earned a Bachelor of Arts in Biological Sciences from Mount Holyoke College and a Master of Education from the University of Texas at Austin. As a high school teacher, I focused on Biology and Environmental Science and as a middle school teacher I focused on Physical and Earth Science. I am most passionate about tutoring science and helping students understand how to ask questions and develop procedures to answer those questions. When working with students one on one I make sure to evaluate their current knowledge and make sure there's a strong foundation on which we can build. I especially enjoy using visual and hands-on tools to help make abstract principles more concrete. In my spare time I enjoy spending time with my family, reading, crocheting, sewing, cooking and learning new things. Learning is a lifelong pursuit and I enjoy finding ways to make learning fun.

I am a graduate of The University of Texas at Austin. I received a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering degree with focus on robotics. I am due to graduate this December with a Master of Science in Applied Mathematics from Tarleton State University. I have several years of experience in higher education. In my two years at Tarleton State University I have taught various levels of college algebra. I have also taught at ITT Technical Institute for two years, covering many electronics and programming classes. I enjoy helping students to see difficult subjects like mathematics and programming in a different light, making the material a little less scary and a lot more understandable.

As a young girl, I frequently crossed the border between my home in Brownsville, Texas, and Matamoros, Mexico. Captivated by Matamoros, I was oblivious to the complexities of immigration issues. While in Matamoros, I immersed myself in the local culture, enjoying festivals at the plaza, eating at local restaurants, and shopping at the market. I was unaware that invisible borders held stories far beyond my understanding. As a recent college graduate, I ventured into Matamoros with great curiosity; I wanted to connect with migrants and asylum seekers whose stories I watched unfold on local and national news. I was driven to visit Matamoros, hoping to understand and address the challenges faced by the individuals on the international bridge. As I approached the border fence, its imposing structure became a stark reminder that I was standing between the threshold of two countries the familiar life I knew in the United States and the unknown aspects that awaited me in Mexico. Families from various countries stood near their makeshift encampments, desperately seeking safety and a better life in the United States. There were families from multiple countries. Indelible scenes unfolded before me: young children with eyes of innocence and desperation, tugging at the sleeves of exhausted parents, all carrying the hope for a better future. On the international bridge, I sparked a conversation with Leandra, a woman from El Salvador who was traveling with her husband and two children. Listening to Leandra's stories, I felt the weight of their journey as she explained that she had to escape the horrific violence and crime in their home country along with economic hardships. The fear and resilience in her children's eyes left a permanent mark on my soul. I spoke to an immigration officer and learned that hundreds of families stay in their tents until they are called to meet with immigration officials. These families need legal representation to apply for asylum as they seek refuge status. Countless souls converged here, seeking compassion, understanding, and a chance at a better life an existing reality invisible to me until I began conversing with them. This experience became an inspiration for my life's work. Motivated to make a meaningful difference, I recently began working at an immigration law firm. Working closely with an attorney, I connected with Jose Martinez and his family from Juarez, Mexico. They were striving for permanent residency in the United States after enduring hardships in their hometown. Jose expressed his aspirations of offering his family stability and security, envisioning a life devoid of the uncertainties they faced in Juarez. However, the journey was challenging. The legal intricacies became more than just paperwork; it represented the Martinez family's aspirations and the hurdles they faced. As we navigated the complexities, the emotional weight of the case became palpable. The fear of the unknown, the hope for a better life, and the bureaucratic hurdles all intertwined, creating a heartbreaking and inspiring narrative. Despite the challenges, the resilient spirit of the Martinez family shone through. The impact on me was profound. Witnessing the Martinez family's resilience fueled my determination to overcome each of their legal obstacles. I was more than just a legal aide; I became a support system, offering reassurance during moments of doubt and sharing in the family's small victories. The Martinez case showed me the personal and transformative impact that immigration law can have on those seeking refuge and opportunity. It reinforced the notion that my role as a legal aide goes beyond the legalities; it involves becoming champions for families striving to build a new life.
