I majored in Middle Eastern Studies and minored in math during undergrad at Cornell. Since graduating I've worked in a number of fields and countries, although the common theme is teaching English and researching in the Middle East. As an English Teaching Assistant at Weill Medical School in Qatar, I became competent at editing and guiding students in writing. I'm now a first year fellow studying Policy Analysis at the Pardee RAND Graduate School.

Four years of Latin in high school, another four at Cornell, several years of independent study, and now three years of teaching Latin professionally, and I still love the language.
Cornell University Economics major with strong math skills through high school calculus. I focus on breaking down complex problems into clear, manageable steps while building confidence and independence. My experience supporting first-generation and low-income students has shaped my patient, encouraging teaching style. I am passionate about leveling the playing field and making math accessible and empowering for every student.
I am Chemistry & Chemical Biology graduate of Cornell University, Magna Cum Laude, very experienced with chemistry and standardized test taking tutoring. Teaching and learning are passions of mine, and I really enjoy helping students exceed their expectations, improving intellectually and paving the way for their futures. My teaching style is a long-term approach to mastery. I believe it is critical to first master fundamentals before building on these concepts to solve more complex problems – the ones on your exam. The best approach for this is regularly scheduled sessions a period of time before an exam, so that come exam time students have had to the opportunity to understand the basics and tackle the most challenging questions that will show up on the exam. I emphasize a problem solving approach, and believe extracting and retaining all information from test questions and practice exams is critical to test performance. I encourage students to take exams under test conditions, and will guide students through challenging problems.Critical to my teaching philosophy is developing test-taking strategy – gaining an in-depth knowledge of questions that will be given on the test, and how to solve them most efficiently. For GRE Math, this involves first reviewing all subject material that could appear on the exam to make sure the basics are mastered, and then moving through exam problems of increasing complexity. For the GRE Verbal section, this involves learning the finite question types for this section, and using the clues each of these formats provides to solve problems. For those who have difficulty navigating longer passages, I encourage zoning in on key turning points, indicated by action words, which many exam questions come from. I also encourage reading Op-Ed articles daily to build reading skills. For those who have trouble with vocabulary questions, I also encourage zoning in on key turning points, learning the nuances of each vocabulary word, memorizing the lists of frequently appearing words on the GRE and learning new words from practice exams. For Chemistry, this involves reviewing practice exams and trying to gauge exam style once the basics have been fully mastered. My strongest tutoring subjects are General Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, GRE Math and GRE Verbal. For three semesters at Cornell, I tutored Organic Chemistry with the Learning Strategies Center. Here, I guided students through problems sets and practice exams, with a particular focus on improving critical reasoning, time management and test-taking strategy skills generally applicable to all academics. I have tutored university level General Chemistry, AP, IB and high school math & chemistry privately. When I took the GRE in August 2014, I scored on the 94th Percentile for both the Quantitative (167) and Verbal Reasoning (164) components. These scores are in the range to attend the nation’s most selective graduate schools. At Cornell, I scored an “A” in all of my general chemistry and organic chemistry courses, including a graduate level organic synthesis course. My professional experiences are strongly researched oriented, and I have worked in 3 organic chemistry labs at Cornell, The Scripps Research Institute and Stockholm University. During my summer internship at Scripps, I was supervised by Phil Baran, winner of the 2013 MacArthur “Genius” Award.Outside of work, I enjoy traveling, Italian language and culture, basketball, hiking and reading. I have visited 23 different countries, lived for 9 months in Sweden, and some of my favorite works of literature are the essays of Massachusetts natives Emerson and Thoreau. The picture in my profile was taken on top of the Duomo in Milan, Italy.Teaching is one of my favorite activities, and I cherish the opportunities to help students succeed. I am happy to help with any and all General Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, High School Math, GRE Math and GRE Verbal tutoring!
I love learning and look forward to helping students feel more confident, prepared, and successful in school. I recently moved back to the Pittsburgh area to begin a private sector career after seven years as a diplomat, working overseas and in Washington DC. I am working as a tutor to share my passion for writing, languages (English and French), history, government, and politics with students. I enhance tutoring sessions with real-world examples and scenarios to make history, politics, social studies, and language arts come alive off the textbook page.
As an educator, an individual is required to fill various different roles in order to provide students with the most effective education possible. After reflecting upon my own formative educational experiences and the teachers that left a profound impact on my thought processes and belief in myself, I realized that educating extends beyond creating an engaging lesson plan, but also includes helping students learn more about themselves in order to shape them into leaders, life-long scholars and students, as well as servicemen and women who are passionate about giving back to their respective communities. Each student has his or her own unique learning style that is determined by his or her own personal experience and backgrounds. Because of this, it is important for an educator to not only provide rudimentary knowledge enclosed in textbooks, but to also fuel them with the inspiration they need to go out and learn more about the issues facing their communities in order to use their experiential learnings to help lift others out of their experiences. For much of my early life, I grew up feeling that I had many learning disabilities and that I could not learn and think like the other kids and was dumber because of it. However, from experience, I have realized that just because you think differently, that it doesn't mean that you think "worse" than everyone else. Learning this invaluable lesson through my own experiences makes me jump at the prospect to work with other students who have gone through similar challenges to help them unleash the power they have in discovering the strength nestled within knowledge. While I am an aspiring physician, I believe that there are many parallels between the two fields of medicine and education that would enable me to provide a unique and meaningful perspective to the classroom. Medicine demands effective education through teaching patients and their families about specific treatments, the manifestation of certain diseases, and the mechanisms of infection within specific physiological pathways. I truly began to appreciate this after interacting with my own pediatrician, who had built her own clinic from the ground-up using her knowledge, the power of education, and the strength of connection. Concerned parents entered the visiting room with coughing and crying parents and emerged with their worries assuaged and feeling more empowered knowing how to take care of their child. This considered, it is vital for every physician to become properly trained to handle these responsibilities: to be effective communicators and leaders, to dissect complex concepts into manageable chunks, and to serve as beacons of support to those seeking his or her support. This is why I want to become an educator before I embark on my medical school journey because I know that, without valuing this integral yet often disregarded facet of medicine, I will not be able to provide the best care possible to my patients. Diagnosis demands more than medicine - it requires care, attention and compassion. These skills, although may be taught in tandem with classroom lectures, can be more fully appreciated through connection and service. This is why I hope to become a Varsity Tutor in the near future: to help build connections with students through service and education as well as foster a passion for learning and academic leadership both in and out of the classroom.
Hello! I'm a premedical student at Cornell University with extensive experience tutoring students, especially in chemistry at the high school and undergraduate level, writing at the high school and undergraduate level, and SAT/ACT prep.
I completed my PhD in English at Harvard University in 2016 and I have been working with students for over 10 years. I've always enjoyed introducing students to new ideas and helping them achieve their goals. In the following paragraphs I'll share my background, detail my experience and expertise, and discuss what motivates me as a teacher. I will also explain my approach to pedagogy. In 2004 I graduated summa cum laude from Cornell University. The following summer I earned a CELTA certification to teach English as a second language in London. I then worked internationally for four years in Prague, Rome, Brussels, and Milan, teaching students of all ages and backgrounds. I helped hundreds of students score highly on the TOEFL exam and gain admission to top American and British universities. I also helped many students excel on the SAT and GRE verbal exam by helping them extend their vocabulary and develop their analytical reasoning skills.I left Europe when I was accepted to Harvard University's PhD program in English, which I began in 2008. I received my master's degree from Harvard in 2010 and the following fall I began assisting professors with their courses in Harvard College as a doctoral student. I worked closely with some of the best professors in the world and I modeled my unique pedagogy after their example. As a scholar with a traditional background in the liberal arts, I share my mentors' staunch commitment to the humanities and the Socratic method as the best way for young minds to discover their potential and develop critical reasoning skills. There are so many dubious test prep and admissions gimmicks out there, but the fact remains that America's best universities look for a particular kind of candidate, a well-rounded student who can reason confidently and express his or her pattern-breaking ideas with clarity, conviction, and grace. No matter what subject I happen to be teaching, everything I do as an instructor brings students a step closer to this significant achievement, one which will truly help them stand out from the crowd.Last year I worked full time for a veterans' non-profit, helping hundreds of servicemen and women transition from the military and gain admission to competitive American universities. Recently, however, I relocated to the Houston area because my fiancee, who also has a PhD in English, now teaches at a major university here. While I continue my research and work towards publishing my dissertation, I will be accepting students for verbal section test prep for all major standardized tests (SAT, ACT, TOEFL, GRE, LSAT, GMAT, etc.). I am also available for lessons in any humanities related field, from history and literature to philosophy, psychology, cultural studies, and world civilization. My broad experience as a teacher qualifies me to work with students from middle school all the way to the PhD.I look forward to hearing about your personal vision of success and helping you accomplish it!
I have been an educator for over 8 years and my areas of specialization are English, Literature, U.S. History, and Drama. My teaching background primarily involves working with elementary school age children, but I have also conducted workshops for middle schoolers and taught adult learners. I have been a camp counselor for five- and six-year olds, supervised an after school program for first and second graders, prepped kids for a Spelling Bee, directed a drama club for high school students, and conducted acting workshops. At Cornell University, I obtained my BS in Industrial and Labor Relations at the ILR School (also known as the I Love to Read School) with a major in ILR and a minor in Education. As an Education minor, I gained experience working with students with diverse learning styles doing fieldwork as a teacher in the Ithaca area. I was also an enthusiastic member of a sketch comedy group and have acted in films. My passions are voice acting, reading, and teaching young students to master their work so they gain confidence and pride in their abilities. I believe my strength as an educator is the ability to connect with students where they are and to make learning fun and engaging.
I am a rising sophomore at Cornell University. I am studying Statistics and Economics, with possible minors in information science and computer science. I have been working with students for several years now and have provided academic support to my peers throughout my time as a high school and now college student. Through my religious school, I taught students of all ages, ranging from Pre-K through 8th Grade. In high school, I helped prepare students for AP, SAT, ACT, and SAT subject tests as part of my role in the National Honor Society. I have considerable personal experience with a vast array of subjects and love sharing my knowledge and experience with others. From calculus to creative writing, I have a genuine passion for all academic pursuits and helping others feel the same way.
In regards to English language, I would be happy to help you with your college application essays. I recently graduated from Cornell University and am current a graduate student in Columbia University's Graduate School for English.Throughout my undergraduate studies, I have helped many students formulate and write their personal statement. Additionally, I have written many of my own personal statements which have helped me gain university admission and scholarship. Therefore, I understand how stressful it can be to write a personal statement and supplementary statements for colleges.I truly believe a well formulated personal statement can make an application stand out and garner momentum to help colleges view the applicant as an individual rather than gpa data. I will make sure your essay reflects your particularity and illustrate what makes you a great fit for [insert dream school name].In regards to mathematics, I have always loved the subject and have tutored maths and physics for over 8 years up to the AP BC calculus level.I believe mathematics is very easy if taught correctly. Teachers and professors who have been teaching a math for many years may grow accustomed to their own teaching styles. Therefore, they may assume that a student remembers a specific concept, and rather than going over said concept, they hastily build upon misunderstood fundamentals. When I was in university, I understand that maths can be challenging for a lot of people because teacher and professors may explain math as if they are talking to other mathematicians. Teachers often do not realized that their students are new to math and are not yet scholars. Please feel free to reach out to me. I look forward to working with you.
I just completed my undergraduate degree in mathematics at Cornell University, with a minor in computer science. I will be pursuing a Master of Science in computer science at Cornell for the next two years. Teaching has always been a passion of mine, as has mathematics - and I am always eager to share this excitement with others.
I am a undergraduate student at Cornell University. I am studying computer science in the College of Engineering. I have been tutoring in all subjects since 9th grade, mostly computer science and mathematics and SAT. My teaching philosophy is based on hands-on learning, and the motto of 'practice makes perfection'. The more you face the problem head on and break it into smaller pieces, the easier the problem becomes to solve. In my spare time, I like to go outside on runs and play basketball with my friends
As a recent graduate student of archaeology at Cornell University, I will be able to help students with subjects ranging from anthropology, archaeology, geography, and social studies. I have conducted research in Romania, Italy, and most recently in Jordan for my thesis; "Resettlement of the Bdul and its effect on Preservation Initiatives at Petra, Jordan." Please let me know if you would like any additional information!
Between trips abroad and completing coursework at Teachers College, Columbia University, I had the pleasure of tutoring students from my very own high school on Long Island and neighboring schools in town. After having received an MA in English education, I have relocated to Manhattan and I am eager to continue helping students achieve their academic goals. In particular, I specialize in tutoring all areas of the SAT and ACT, and any type of writing. Of course, whenever I work with students I aim to equip them with the skills I used in developing my mastery of the the material we are studying and the skills I would use to find the best answer choice or to get the sentence, paragraph and essay as a whole just right!
I am an intelligent, creative education professional with a passion for Math, English, curriculum development, and intervention strategies. During my senior year, I tutored students from the Department of Athletics and the Office of Academic and Diversity Initiatives in Calculus I. I am passionate about helping others gain the skills, confidence, and understanding to achieve academic success.
I love teaching, tutoring and helping people understand science. As an ecologist, I'm always interested in the connections between organisms, other organisms and the abiotic environment. I'm also interested in how humans interact with the non-human environment, especially in caring for ecosystems, protecting ecosystem services, transitioning to a carbon neutral economy, and ethics surrounding these issues. I care about students, particularly high-school and college aged students in the climate generation, and hope to equip my students with the knowledge and tools they need to make a difference in the world. I also absolutely love biology. The adaptations that allow organisms to survive their environments are endlessly fascinating. I hope to meet some of you and to be helpful as you proceed in a life of learning.
As a Cornell Student and someone who raised my own SAT score from 1350 to 1480, scoring 770 in Math and 710 in Reading and Writing, I understand firsthand how the right approach can unlock a student's full potential. My teaching style is highly repetition-based: I focus on helping students master patterns, build confidence through consistent practice, and develop efficient problem-solving habits that stick. I also excelled in middle school and high school attending specialized schools. I have prior experience helping students prepare for the SAT, particularly in Math, where I emphasize conceptual understanding over memorization. I enjoy tailoring my sessions to each student's needs, ensuring that complex topics become intuitive and that progress is both measurable and motivating. My goal is to make studying less stressful and more methodical, showing students that progress comes from clarity, structure, and steady effort.
I graduated from Cornell where I majored in Latin before beginning my pre-medical post-baccalaureate studies at Columbia. I greatly enjoy helping students of all ages to understand concepts, just as I have at Columbia where I would frequently guide my fellow peers through physics problems. I want to help students feel the "Ah ha!" moment of grasping a concept and breaking complex problems down to simple solutions. As a former swimmer and triathlete, I enjoy keeping physically fit. In my spare time, I enjoy playing guitar as well!
I am a recent Cornell University graduate (Dec '23) majoring in Biological Sciences with a focus on Genetics, Genomics, and Development. My passion lies in healthcare, as I am currently preparing to attend medical school this upcoming fall. However, I have always had an interest in teaching. I started as a general chemistry TA, supporting students during problem solving sessions. Then, I helped teach our genetics lecture course, coordinating individual and group tutoring sessions that guided students in content application. This position transformed into a leadership role, organizing our teaching team while spearheading an initiative to train fellow teaching assistants in pedagogical techniques that I learned in a course I took on the art of teaching. Lastly, in an ethics of medicine course of non-STEM majors, I prepared and facilitated discussion sections on current topics in personalized medicine. These experiences, combined with my time as a teaching assistant in correctional facilities, helped me grow as a varsity tutor now going into my 4th year on this platform. Given this breadth of experience teaching diverse and unique students, I am eager and excited to support young scientists in any subject related to this field.
I graduated Cornell University in 2015 with a B.S. in Human Biology, Health, and Society. After graduating, I worked as a research technician at Columbia University Medical Center before going to India for a 4-week global health educational program. Currently, I am preparing to apply to medical school.I have acquired considerable teaching and mentoring experience in the past seven years. In high school, I tutored elementary and middle school students in math and general homework help. As a general chemistry tutor at Cornell University, I guided students through problem sets and exam preparation. To effectively do so, I integrated the knowledge and skills that I had gained through my own experience as a student in general chemistry as well as in other disciplines. While a teaching assistant for a nutrition laboratory course, I worked with the instructors to promote an appreciation for positive nutritional practices. Furthermore, six days a week for almost two years, I helped two local children achieve psychological and reading skills by utilizing psychoeducational books as a tool. Finally, I mentored two internationally-adopted youths in Japanese language and culture. Through these experiences, I have developed interpersonal and professional skills necessary to be an effective, reliable, and fun tutor.
I recently graduated from Cornell University with a degree in English. I love all things literature and writing related. I have previous tutoring experience, having tutored 15 hours per week for 6 months at 826 Boston, a local non-profit focused on helping students develop creative writing and reading skills outside of the classroom. I am currently in the process of applying to PhD programs in English. When I'm not studying, I'm usually traveling or planning my next trip. I just returned from two months in Peru, Bolivia, and Chile, where I hopped from town to town and explored a new part of the world. Next I'm looking ahead to an extended hiking trip along the Continental Divide Trail in Colorado this summer. Backpacking and canoeing are my preferred modes of travel.I'm available to tutor anything English related- grammar, vocabulary, reading, essay writing, essay editing, college essay writing and editing, and the GRE verbal and analytic writing sections. My availability is flexible and includes evenings and weekends. I'm passionate about English, and I hope to share my enthusiasm with students.

In my free time, I enjoy exploring new technologies and sharing my passion for mathematics through engaging, hands-on projects.
I grew up tutoring three of my siblings and their friends in Math throughout Middle and High School. During that time, I also coached swimming and soccer. Over the years, I've learned to show same concepts in multiple ways depending on the person I'm tutoring. And I've built up a considerable tolerance and patience through years of tutoring people with different personalities.
My goal is to help you learn difficult concepts and prepare you for your standardized tests. I hope to make you reach your potential and assist you in increasing your scores. I have taught ACT prep courses in the past, and I know the strategies of how to pace yourself through the test. My teaching style consists of asking you a lot of questions so that I know your thought process. After listening to how you're processing the information, I can point out the words that you may have missed on the first round of reading. As for my personal background, I have obtained a BA from Cornell University in China and Asia Pacific Studies and a minor in Business. After college, my academic interests have changed to now include data science and artificial intelligence.
I earned my bachelor's degree in chemical engineering, then worked in the computer database software industry as a pre-sales engineer, consultant, trainer, and quality assurance engineer. Consulting in several industries gave me broad exposure to real-world problems and a work ethic that may serve as a role model. I learned to listen to problems and come up with creative and practical solutions. As a trainer and pre-sales engineer, I co-wrote a tutorial, created class materials, and made many technical presentations about "leading edge" software, and so became skilled at explaining complex concepts. My work in QA reinforced my obsession with quality and gave me a good eye for seeing and diagnosing errors, which applies to student errors and misunderstandings.I have tutored on and off since my college days, in math, science and ESL. I approach tutoring with a positive attitude, a good ear for listening, patience, respect, and humor. I have a bias toward deep understanding rather than rote memorization.
I am a sophomore student at Cornell University, studying Computer Science. I also find Linguistics and Natural Language Processing extremely interesting, and I hope to pursue a minor in them. In my spare time, you might find me singing, reading, or cooking! My passion for teaching has been present for as long as I can remember. My younger brother has a learning disability, and so I have spent most of my life trying to see the world the way he sees it, while letting him into mine. This ongoing experience has given me an appreciation for the dimension and variety that minds offer, and it has taught me that not everyone learns, or thinks, the same way. I hope to provide accommodation and empathy in everything I do, and learn just as much from my students as they do from me! My formal tutoring experience was with refugee students, whom I taught English and math. That exposure gave me an introduction to tutoring those who may not be as comfortable with English, and I built on my skill of speaking concisely and simply when required. I tutor a broad range of subjects, but most enjoy teaching middle and high school English, Social Science, and Math. I am a firm believer in education, and its power to uplift and encourage. This is something that I have seen in my parents' lives, and one that as a college student I am now experiencing firsthand. It is my goal to be of great help to all my students on their educational path!
