I have always been passionate about physics and mathematics, and I have always been passionate about teaching. Students of all varieties deserve a quality education in these subjects, whether or not they intend to pursue careers in science.I have done some degree of teaching and tutoring for over a decade, though I began to do so regularly in college. From 2007 to 2009, I tutored and occasionally taught math classes at the Minnesota Internship Center, a charter school in Minneapolis, MN that primarily serves Somali immigrants. During this time, I was also a tutor for the Macalester College Department of Physics and Astronomy, where I obtained my B.A. in physics and mathematics in May 2009. In 2009, I was a private tutor in calculus for two different students.From September 2010 through December 2011, I was a teaching assistant in introductory physics courses at Boston University, where I obtained my Ph.D in physics in May 2016. This teaching encompassed typical introductory material (Newtonian mechanics and basic electromagnetism) for a variety of skill and interest levels, both calculus and non-calculus based. From January 2014 to June 2015, I was a volunteer tutor at Beacon Academy, mainly for algebra, for motivated students attempting to enter competitive high schools who did not have the financial means to do so without scholarships.As I've mentioned, I obtained a B.A. in physics and mathematics from Macalester College in May 2009, and I obtained my Ph.D in physics from Boston University this past May. I will soon be entering another degree program at Boston University, this time for a masters degree in teaching. Teaching and tutoring are not a side interest to me - I aim to be a career high school teacher.I am qualified to tutor physics up through the GRE level, in addition to all the required mathematics needed for such physics. My favorite subject to tutor is probably calculus, at virtually any level. I love the way it combines basic ideas - the derivative is the slope of a function at any given point, the integral is the area underneath a curve - with real mathematical rigor, and seeing students connect to these concepts is a delight. Calculus is essentially what got me interested in physics in the first place, and applying it to basic concepts such as the relationship between position, velocity and acceleration is another great way to test students' understandings.My basic teaching philosophy is to let the students figure it out for themselves as much as possible. Physics in particular must be learned through constant practice and interactivity. I am happy to provide hints and steer students in the right direction, but only in such a way that they eventually arrive at the answer themselves.Outside of academics, I have pretty typical interests. I enjoy playing guitar, listening to music both live and recorded, going for long walks, and reading for pleasure (although even these books tend to be academic - just not in physics!).

I am the first person in my family to be born in the United States. My entire family are immigrants and it was only recently that my last remaining family members came over from China. Later, I moved to an office above the Main Street Bakery at the Magic Kingdom. There, I set up an intranet for Theme Parks Finance so managers in shops, food service locations, and at attractions could adjust labor schedules hour by hour, based on actual attendance.But... that's enough about me. After more than ten years, I shifted focus to becoming trained and certified in information technology and project management. The reason I want to be a tutor is because I like to help students achieve success in a difficult subject such as math. I want to show them even though it is a subject of great difficulty, math can still be learned. To learn math is to learn the approach and steps to the problem. The most important thing is to understand why the approach is taken this way or another way. Math is an interesting subject as there are many routes to solve a problem. My goal is to show the quickest/efficient way for students to understand easily and sometimes I will create inventive ways to help students possibly memorize formulas or solve the problems. I hope with each session that each student can learn at least on tip/strategy/concept of the math topic being taught. With that said, the same can be done with chemistry. Chemistry is about a quarter memorization, but more importantly three-quarters understanding. Once any student understands the concepts of a chemistry topic, memorization becomes easy. With chemistry, I will often relate the concept to real life so this way understanding can be much easier. My goal is to definitely guide each student to the desired grade he or she wants.

As a tutor, I want to assist students through the process of learning in a partnership and ongoing relationship. I hope to not just be end-goal oriented, but to really work on the core issues along the way to make future problems more manageable. I have a Master of Divinity degree from Boston University School of Theology. In this degree, I focused primarily on ethics from a variety of societal viewpoints. I also have a Bachelor of Arts in Biblical and Theological Studies and a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology, both from North Park University in Chicago. I will be beginning a Master of Business Administration at Boston University Questrom School of Business very soon.I tutor primarily writing, reading, and a variety of other subjects as needed. As a tutor, I am laid back but ask my students to challenge themselves. I want learning to become part of everyday life, not an obligation. Tutoring writing, in particular, allows me to really see the whole process of thinking for a student. From the formulation of an idea, to finding a voice, to going through the details of an argument, writing offers insight into the key learning practices of a student. I love to be a part of this process, guiding and learning alongside.When Im not tutoring, I enjoy gardening, composting, and cooking, as well as learning about the intricacies of society.

I am certified in Massachusetts as a classroom teacher, math specialist, reading specialist, and education administrator. I have two sons. I also love writing songs and run a musical theater camp. I love to make learning fun and exciting for my students. I was a 2015 finalist for Massachusetts Teacher of the Year.

I have many years of experience tutoring a variety of subjects in math and science with people of all ages. I am a graduate of Boston University. I received my Bachelor of Science in Journalism with a concentration in German. Since graduation, I have traveled around the world, organizing school activities that encouraged parents to be active participants in their children's education, leading & teaching in a youth service-oriented program, teaching Japanese students conversational English, and teaching ELA and Social Studies in a traditional middle school classroom. I have also edited and proofread books, newsletters, college essays, and more. While I also tutor History, I am most passionate about teaching English. I believe reading and writing well are the most important skills anyone can have. I know that everyone learns differently, and I believe that by personalizing learning to the individual, every student can be successful. In my free time, I enjoy reading, hiking, and spending time with my family.
