Hello, my name is Sarah and I am excited to be tutoring. In my experience teaching, I have learned that empowerment in a subject is a combination of efficient guidance from me and a willingness to improve from my students. By signing up for tutoring, students are already taking the first step to mastering whatever areas in which they may be having difficulty. I won't do all the work for my students but I will never leave them to figure out everything by themselves, as that defeats the purpose of a tutor. I will constantly assess understanding during the learning process, thus gradually giving my students the confidence that they have moved into deeper understanding of material. With the right instruction, everyone is capable of overcoming those problem subjects, and I am happy to help along the way.

I recently completed a Ph.D. in Consumer and Family Economics and Consumer Behavior at Purdue University. I have extensive experience teaching and tutoring undergraduate students in various courses in economics. I love helping students learn new topics through simple and relatable examples. I try to create a friendly environment for my students where they can succeed in their learning journey.

I'm a Boston University graduate with a B.A. in economics and history. I've tutored students in a wide range of subjects including world history, US history, macro/microeconomics, statistics, algebra, Spanish, and geography. Before becoming a tutor, I worked at multiple museums as a tour guide and class instructor. Everyone has subjects that give them more trouble than others, but I'm a firm believer that anything can be learned by anyone, and that learning is more about good habits and creative teaching techniques than it is about natural aptitude for a subject. I was personally able to test this idea when I changed my approach to learning Spanish after struggling for years in formal classes. After re-engineering my study strategy to complement my strengths and weaknesses, I was able to teach myself to be a fluent Spanish speaker in less than a year. With the lessons learned from this experience in mind, I seek to teach my students learning skills that help them get the grade they want in the short-term, but also prepare them to conquer future academic challenges in the long-term.

I have always been passionate about physics and mathematics, and I have always been passionate about teaching. Students of all varieties deserve a quality education in these subjects, whether or not they intend to pursue careers in science.I have done some degree of teaching and tutoring for over a decade, though I began to do so regularly in college. From 2007 to 2009, I tutored and occasionally taught math classes at the Minnesota Internship Center, a charter school in Minneapolis, MN that primarily serves Somali immigrants. During this time, I was also a tutor for the Macalester College Department of Physics and Astronomy, where I obtained my B.A. in physics and mathematics in May 2009. In 2009, I was a private tutor in calculus for two different students.From September 2010 through December 2011, I was a teaching assistant in introductory physics courses at Boston University, where I obtained my Ph.D in physics in May 2016. This teaching encompassed typical introductory material (Newtonian mechanics and basic electromagnetism) for a variety of skill and interest levels, both calculus and non-calculus based. From January 2014 to June 2015, I was a volunteer tutor at Beacon Academy, mainly for algebra, for motivated students attempting to enter competitive high schools who did not have the financial means to do so without scholarships.As I've mentioned, I obtained a B.A. in physics and mathematics from Macalester College in May 2009, and I obtained my Ph.D in physics from Boston University this past May. I will soon be entering another degree program at Boston University, this time for a masters degree in teaching. Teaching and tutoring are not a side interest to me - I aim to be a career high school teacher.I am qualified to tutor physics up through the GRE level, in addition to all the required mathematics needed for such physics. My favorite subject to tutor is probably calculus, at virtually any level. I love the way it combines basic ideas - the derivative is the slope of a function at any given point, the integral is the area underneath a curve - with real mathematical rigor, and seeing students connect to these concepts is a delight. Calculus is essentially what got me interested in physics in the first place, and applying it to basic concepts such as the relationship between position, velocity and acceleration is another great way to test students' understandings.My basic teaching philosophy is to let the students figure it out for themselves as much as possible. Physics in particular must be learned through constant practice and interactivity. I am happy to provide hints and steer students in the right direction, but only in such a way that they eventually arrive at the answer themselves.Outside of academics, I have pretty typical interests. I enjoy playing guitar, listening to music both live and recorded, going for long walks, and reading for pleasure (although even these books tend to be academic - just not in physics!).

Originally from the Boston area, I completed my undergrad degree at Georgetown University in Washington where I focused on Marketing, International Business, and Spanish. I have lived and worked in Boston, Spain, Belgium, Washington, Brazil, and Afghanistan. I completed an MBA in Finance and International Management at Boston University in 2012 and am recently back in the Boston area again. I enjoy traveling and adventure.

I graduated Magna Cum Laude from Boston University with my B.S.in Biomedical Engineering (BME). I spent a few years working as a BME in Boston, MA before changing my career plans towards medicine. I pursued my M.D. at the University of Iowa, specializing in the field of obstetrics and gynecology. I'm currently a practicing resident physician in Phoenix, AZ.I'm sure it's uncommon to find a full-time physician, wanting to tutor on the side, but my passion in tutoring and mentoring is deeply rooted in my experiences during my academic pursuit. As a student who struggled through middle school and high school, I was lucky to have encountered great tutors and mentors who aided and provided me the tools to become successful in academia and my personal life. I became motivated to become that same role model and educator for others. I began tutoring during undergrad, emphasizing in engineering and advanced calculus courses. As I worked as an engineer, I continued to privately tutor college students, and taught MCAT and college prep courses. I began teaching biological and medical science courses as I progressed through my medical school education, honoring in numerous classes. I performed well on my medical board exams, and thus was invited to tutor board prep exam for graduate medical students. I am a current PhD student in Molecular and Cellular Biology at Boston University. I moved to Boston in 2013 to pursue research with the Belfer Institute at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute after graduating with a B.S. in Biology and a minor in French from Allegheny College. I am a physician and medical educator with extensive experience helping students prepare for exams, including certification exams, and completing course work in the health professions. I received my undergraduate degree in neuroscience and biology from Brandeis University in 2009 and my MD from Boston University in 2014. I matched into a competitive general surgery residency, but left to pursue teaching full time. Most of my time has been with paramedic students, but I've worked with students from all areas of medicine and outside medicine. What draws me to teaching is the opportunity to work closely with a student to build both their understanding of a subject and confidence in their abilities; nothing is as rewarding as that moment when a difficult subject "clicks" for a student! I primarily tutor in the life and biomedical sciences, and physiology is probably my favorite subject to teach (it's so complex and fascinating!), though I do love pharmacology and basic biology, as well. I am a graduate of Boston University, where I received my Bachelor of Science in Film & Television in 2010. I am currently working towards an Associate of Science degree in Engineering Science at RVCC. Immediately after graduating from BU in 2010, I became a substitute teacher at the high school I had attended, teaching a variety of subjects such as Band, General Science and Latin. After substituting for 6 months, I moved to Los Angeles, California to pursue a career in Set Lighting. After two years of settling in, I joined a local non-profit tutoring group. Initially, I helped elementary school students with creative writing projects, and then I moved to general after-school tutoring sessions, where ages ranged from 6-14. I'm most comfortable tutoring Math (up to Calculus) and Science related subjects, as well as helping with expository writing assignments. To me, Math and Science can be treated very much like puzzles and thus can be be broken down into small, enjoyable pieces that motivate the student to learn and build upon. Expository writing is related to Math and Science to me because all three involve logical explanations of subject matter. Expository writing is all about maintaining focus on proving the student's thesis. With that understanding in every paragraph, content just falls into place! My teaching style is built on respect: I refuse to patronize students by hand-holding them through assignments either by my tone of voice or over-involvement on my part. I think this is counterproductive, as it reinforces the idea that the student can't do assignments without outside help. Instead, I treat the student as a peer that only needs a new way to look at a problem. My goal is to to get each student, as quickly as possible, to a point where they feel confident enough to know they no longer need my help. When I'm not studying for my second degree or tutoring, I'm spending time with my family, working out in the gym, playing tennis or basketball, taking a ton of pictures, or playing guitar. I also like to keep up with current events and what's happening on the internet. Most importantly, I like to have a lot of laughs while I'm doing these things!

While tutoring in college I found that tutoring/teaching was something I enjoyed very much. Not only was I understanding the material in much more depth, but I also enjoyed watching those that I tutored succeed in their classes, and get a sense of achievement. I received my degree in Engineering, which allowed me to study various subjects in the Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM), thus allowing me to get a sense of how all of these subjects interact with each other, specially mathematics as the tool that unites all of them. Although I received my degree in Engineering, I have been drawn to a classroom because I enjoy sharing my knowledge with others, but also enjoy learning from my students as they present various ways of solving problems. I have tutored students at different levels of education, from primary to college. Although they are different in age range, I have been able to overcome this age gap by looking at their learning styles. Not everyone learns the same way, and that is what I need to understand about my students, what is their style and tailor the tutoring session to maximize their learning. The importance of a solid mathematics education goes beyond just improved test scores. I use the word, "mathematics," frequently but, never until recently had I thought about the actual meaning of the word.The word, "mathematics," has at least two interesting literal definitions in two ancient languages. In Greek, the root of mathematics means, "learning." In Hebrew, it's root is "thinking." They tell us that mathematics gives us the critical ability to learn and think logically in any field of endeavor. It is more important than knowledge, which is so readily available on the Internet.I believe that all students have the capacity to understand mathematics under the right conditions. I reach my students by helping them develop a deeper understanding of important concepts so that the process has context and connections can be made between what has been learned with new ideas and skills recently introduced.I am a graduate of Boston University and the University of Massachusetts. I have training as a learning specialist and often work with students struggling with language based learning differences, ADHD, or executive function challenges. I am currently a graduate student enrolled at Boston University's Wheelock College of Education and Human Development where I am receiving my MAT in English education. Through the program, I am student teaching at Boston Green Academy where I teach AP Literature, AP Language and 12th grade English Language Arts. I graduated in May 2020 from University of Wisconsin-Madison with a B.S. in education studies and a B.A. in English. As an undergraduate, I held several positions as a tutor and teaching assistant in both middle school and high school classes. I also spent the summers of 2018 and 2019 teaching an interdisciplinary humanities course on Tourism and Development at the Cape Eleuthera Island School, a rigorous experiential education program for high school students. Outside of school I love to read, journal, run and play with my new puppy!

I have always a passion for curiosity. The buzzword "lifelong learner" has been around the education world for quite some time. But I want to have a lifelong curiosity. I always want to know things work and how to better understand things. I bring that same passion for curiosity to everything that I do, especially teaching and tutoring. Nothing brings me greater joy than being able to bring someone closer to their capability. My biggest teaching motto has been: "I don't teach based on what I know my students can already. I teach based on where I know they are capable of going and what they are capable of doing." I believe that people should always strive to know more. Curiosity makes the world a better and, frankly, a more fun place. If I can instill that lifelong curiosity into even one of my students, I would have reached success.I also firmly believe that conversation is a huge part of a successful teaching/learning process. No one knows how the students learn better than the students themselves. I constantly check in with how students are doing, often before I tell them how I think they are doing. This constantly dialogue allows us to form a better connection and does nothing but allow me to teach and the student learn better. I want to know their goals, interests, hobbies, learning styles, and anything and everything in between. This process is not a dictatorship but a partnership.I look forward to getting know my students and helping them on their educational journey!!!!

I am a 2015 graduate of Boston University, having received a BA in Biology with concentrations in cellular and molecular biology with genetics. During my enrollment, I participated in graduate level classes at the medical school, participated in on-campus research, and completed my studies after just 3 years. I've always had a love for biology but that is not my only area of specialty. Math studies from elementary levels through calculus are one of my strong points as well. I believe that with my tutoring, as well as my organizational tools and study aides, anyone can be a successful student.

I completed the undergraduate liberal arts curriculum at Davidson College and graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Biology. Following graduation I completed four years of work at Children’s Hospital Boston in the Hematology and Oncology Department as a Research Technician investigating genetic disorders of iron metabolism in a mouse model system.After my time at Children’s Hospital, I enrolled in a graduate program at Boston University. After six years, I received my PhD in Molecular Biology, Cellular Biology and Biochemistry. My PhD research focused on developing a novel methodology for fluorescently detecting unmodified RNAs in living E. coli cells.Concurrently, I was engaged as a Teaching Fellow for courses in Microbiology, Physiology, Molecular Biology, Cellular Biology and Biochemistry. As a Teaching Fellow I instructed and tutored engineering students who easily absorbed Mathematics, but struggled with the life sciences. Working with these students was challenging, but success in motivating and helping them overcome learning barriers to succeed academically was my favorite part of the job and personally very gratifying. I now believe that teaching students how to push through any intellectual roadblocks and overcome learning difficulties can be more important than teaching the subject matter alone. When I am not in the classroom or lab, I spend my time playing water polo or life guarding, surfing and fishing the beaches of Nantucket.

I am currently a postdoctoral associate at Yale University conducing research in genetics/neuroscience. Throughout the years I have had many opportunities to interact with and train students. Specifically, as a graduate student I have had experience as a teaching assistant for general biology and advanced genetics lab courses, and have also tutored high school students in AP chemistry. I received my B.S. in Neuroscience and Behavioral Biology from Emory University with a minor in Spanish. I am currently working toward my M.S. in Medical Sciences at Boston University School of Medicine. In college, I worked with a high school student, for his 9th grade year, focusing mostly on his biology and writing assignments. I was a research coordinator at the Marcus Autism center where I worked with very young kids (ages 2-9) with and without learning disabilities. We worked on general school-related skills and any homework they brought. In my master's program, I did a lot of group study. Frequently, this meant teaching a group of my peers who needed to see the material presented in a new way. I love learning and I want to help others love it, too. Throughout my studies, grades never just came easily to me. I was constantly working at getting better and trying to figure out how to solve problems in many different ways. With this type of experience, I want to help other students who may be struggling with a concept to get to a place where they see how fun and rewarding it can be to really understand the material. I tutor a wide variety of topics; however, my favorites are biology and anatomy. Biology is so exciting for me because it is the foundation for all of life, and helps us understand the world we live in. Anatomy is great because you are living in your own cheat sheet (your body)! When I am tutoring, I want to hear or see my students' thought processes. It's great if you can get to the right answer, but truly learning means knowing how you got there. I am a graduate of Boston University where I earned both my M.S. and Ph.D. in Biomedical Engineering. Prior to that, I attended Tufts University where I earned my B.S., also in Biomedical Engineering. During my tenure at Boston University I was responsible for teaching two undergraduate level engineering courses, requiring me to teach in both large classroom and one-on-one settings. I am most comfortable teaching quantitative sciences, although I also have experience teaching standardized tests and more qualitative subjects such as Biology or Chemistry.I am a born and raised Bostonian, having grown up in Reading, MA. I am a proud product of the Massachusetts Public School system. I am a die-hard Patriots fan, as well as a Bruins season ticket holder. I taught Algebra 2 & Geometry at the Benjamin Banneker High School for a year and then worked 4 years at the Sunflower Learning Academy with students age ranged from K 12 in a range of Science & Math subjects. I taught Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Algebra 1 & 2, Geometry, Precalculus, Calculus, SAT Math. I also taught Math for K 8th grade. From my experience at the Sunflower Learning Academy, I just started tutoring all ages in the Math & Sciences.The most important element for any child's self esteem is identity. I feel so fortunate to have the opportunity to work with students of all ages and backgrounds as a tutor. I have various tutoring experiences from tutoring college level athletes in Chemistry and Kinesiology, to teaching and tutoring Medical Terminology to high school students. I will begin my program where I will receive my Masters in Medical Science at Boston University Medical School in the fall. I am originally from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, where I began tutoring lower and middle schoolers in English, Maths and Science, and organizational and study techniques. In college, I worked as a supplemental instructor (SI). I held weekly review sessions outside of class and helped students prepare for tests, quizzes, labs, and pending homework assignments.
