I have a B.A. in English Language and Literature, and in Cinema and Media Studies from The University of Chicago, and an M.A. in Film Studies from The University of Iowa, where I also spent two years as a T.A., teaching undergraduate courses in film studies and related fields. I firmly believe that self-confidence, far more than ambition or natural aptitude, is the greatest determinant of success in an academic setting. By "confidence" I mean not only confidence in ones mastery of topical material, but, more fundamentally, confidence in ones ability to learn and think independently. Hello,Having gone through some tough schools and classes (and even ones where I didn't have the attention and interest that may have helped), I know that that reality is that you will not understand every subject quickly.Did Einstein understand relativity in an hour, or did he have to work years to get it?I was an assistant to a Nobel Prize winner when younger. You know I did not get everything right away. But he was a great teacher and empathetic person and it worked!So I know that anyone can learn almost anything even if they think the subject is hard, or the others are "too smart".Our school system is not always perfect about motivating learners on all subjects. Nor does it deal with pressures and expectations from other classmates, people and what society expects of you. SO WHAT! I truly love to see the smile when someone says, "I get it".As a public school JHS and HS teacher, my license is in Biology 7-12 and have taught other sciences. I also have advance degrees in other areas and have taught it on a college level.I have a BA in Economics from Queens College (but had more courses in science), an MA in Economics from Northwestern University, and MBA in Marketing and Finance from the University of Chicago, and an MA in Teaching from Relay Graduate School of Education.I do not have a "favorite" subject to tutor. A lot of learning is seeing the value in the subject, and the beauty of utterly understanding it.My teaching philosophy(s) are many but boil down to a few things: 1 What does the student need to understand? 2 What does the student understand at this time? 3 How does the student learn (visually, via reading, examples, etc.) and 4 Teaching to reach the student's goal for what they need to learn. I think it's important to get to know each student's learning style in order for us to have the most productive sessions. I typically use class time to present a lesson plan, practice problems on the lesson, and talk through the solutions to determine areas of strength and areas of improvement. I typically provide some homework problems to allow students a chance to try concepts on their own to strengthen their understanding.Positivity is key! Students taking the PSAT and SAT have found their numbers jump beyond what they could have expected. But beyond these tests, there is an underlying indicator I must share. Often times, students are in need of teachers because of their lack of interest in the topic. Through my time and effort, there have been many students who have come to love the subjects learned. So much so, that they continued to want to grow their understanding of the materials. For example, I have gone on to train students to compete in prestigious regional, state, and national mathematics competitions. This could not be possible with the philosophy of just "teaching the test". Teaching the concepts to the greatest extent students could understand led to a love of learning that, I can proudly say, still drives their academic careers to this day. I received my Masters degree in Humanities with a focus in Cinema and Media Studies from the University of Chicago. Before earning my Masters degree, I attended the University of Louisville, where I received my Bachelors of Art in Humanities with a minor in Film Studies. During my time at the University of Louisville, I pursued a variety of different majors, in French, Philosophy, Math and Physics due to the diverse range of my passions, and finally settled on the Humanities because it allowed me to study all of them at once. I am most passionate about teaching anything within the Arts (e.g. Literature), French language and culture, and the purer side of Mathematics, where the abstractions of numbers give us the freedom to do with them what we will. I also love helping students work their way through the daunting task of preparing for standardized tests. I have often found that my past students have gotten tangled in the problems that have been set out for them, and I have always found success in teaching the conceptual framework behind these problems, so that they learn to find solutions by whatever means they prefer. I also really enjoy reading and writing.Outside of academics I like to do pottery, play basketball, and watch Netflix (though they recently removed all my favorite shows). I have two little sisters, who I helped in school, and a cat, Indiana Jones.
