I am a student at Arizona State University in the biomedical engineering department. I will be earning my Bachelor's degree in May of 2015 and beginning my master's degree in biomedical engineering in August 2015. The research that I have been working on is studying more direct routes of drug delivery within the body as well as developing code for counting cells. I am an avid learner and love to share my knowledge with those around me. My favorite courses to tutor are predominantly quantitative. I like to treat these courses like an intricate puzzle that I have to solve using the skills in my "skill tool belt". I would love to share my enthusiasm for these courses with the students I tutor, helping them realize their skills and increasing their confidence in the material. Upon entering college, I tested into a basic math but was eventually able to obtain a graduate degree in a math intensive subject. The road from basic algebra to advanced mathematics was arduous but it was all made possible over a decade ago with the help of a tutor. It was through tutoring that I discovered my greatest barrier to learning mathematics: a lack of belief in myself. The myth that I did not possess a deep inborn talent required to perform math or science kept me from reaching my potential. Once I let that go, I discovered that even a belated and neglected learner, like I once was, could succeed in math. Math is a craft learned through doggedness and attention. Belief in ones own abilities can only be recognized through exposure and experience. This is what a tutor provides.I developed a large repertoire of math skills and memory tricks while being tutored and eventually decided to pass them along as a tutor myself. I continued to use practical equations, colorful anecdotes, and methods of engaging exploration to assist students as a peer tutor until I completed my masters degree in 2006. I was then promoted to the full time Coordinator of Math and Science tutoring at my previous University, where I excelled in my duties to create and present science and math workshops, and to hire and train a team of successful math and science tutors.I believe in successful tutoring because I am a success story.

During my 3.5 years at Arizona State University I could never pick a focused area of study because I was, and still am, interested in everything. I started off as a math major because I was already very accomplished in the subject, having taken Calc 3 and Differential Equations in high school. However, I found myself wanting to explore other subjects as soon as I started college, taking courses in art and music history, dance, anthropology, and biology. I excelled in all of them, making it even harder for me to choose just one thing. I then became a biological sciences major, with an emphasis on genomics, but I couldnt let go of my other interests, wanting to continue my studies in anthropology, math, and dance. A year into that major and I wanted to change yet again, this time to physical anthropology. A year into physical anthropology, and I wanted to change my major even still. This time though I knew I had to slow down and really think about what it is I want to do.In my time away I have realized that what has remained constant for me is a love of learning. This is why I continue to go to my local library every month, consistently leaving with a stack of 10+ books. Furthermore, while taking classes in college I found that I really enjoyed helping other students succeed in their studies. I helped people in chemistry labs and biology labs, edited essays, and worked through math problem sets with other students. When I tutored students, regardless of subject, I would bring patience and understanding with me to the session. If they were not grasping a concept, then I knew it was something that I was doing wrong. Everyone learns differently and at different paces, and my goal was and is to be able to communicate the information you want to know in a style that is most suitable for you. Additionally, when it comes to math and science courses, I emphasize conceptual understanding. When tutoring and talking to other students in chemistry, physics, etc. , I found that often times they did not know why a formula worked or why a step was being taken, causing them to make mistakes when problems did not perfectly resemble examples done in class. When I tutor, I will make sure that students have a qualitative as well as a quantitative understanding of the material, making them more adaptable to different formats of test questions. And if youre wondering about French being listed in my tutoring subjects, I took four years of French in high school, placed top 10 in the National French test my junior and senior years, and I continue to work on my French by listening and talking to my boyfriend and his family, for whom French is one of their native languages.

I approach each day with an opportunity to learning from my mistakes and start anew while translating my understanding of Positive Psychology, practicing empathy, and nurturing the whole-child socially and emotionally.

I am a passionate student pursuing my Masters in Computer Science at ASU. I believe as a student myself, I can better understand and necessitate any learning curves students go through.

I really enjoy helping students build their knowledge, skills and self-confidence, particularly through the teaching of reading, writing, and other language arts. As a teacher, the best time of year for me was when my little students cracked the reading code and began reading all over the place-walking down halls, in the library, the cafeteria-everywhere and everything! I knew whole vistas had been opened to them. I taught adult illiterates as a volunteer for a number of years and the excitement and feeling of success they had was so encouraging for me. Tutoring allows me to have the personal satisfaction of a one to one relationship with a learner. Hearing a student got a greatly improved score on a test or aced a reading or writing assignment gives me great satisfaction as a teacher. I enjoyed my years in the classroom and look forward to returning some day to that environment but find that I truly enjoy teaching in small intimate groups of 1-4 students. When I teach I find out how my students learn best and teach to their strengths.In my spare time I take my dog to nursing homes and critical care hospitals to visit the patients. She is a "love therapy" dog and greatly in demand. I love to fish, both deep sea and freshwater and any time spent on or near the water is perfection. I have painted children's furniture for years and all my nieces and nephews and children of friends can count on having one of my pieces for their own. I also write stories and poetry for personal pleasure and as gifts to children. I just wish I was a better artist and could illustrate them myself!
