I graduated from Harvard in 2008, where I concentrated in Classics (Greek and Latin Language and Literature) with a Secondary Field in Dramatic Arts. After my senior year, I was awarded the Classics Department's Segal Fellowship for Travel and Research. I received my MA in Advanced Theatre Practice from the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama (University of London) in 2013 and previously completed the One Year Professional Acting course at the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School in England.I founded an international theater company called The Sun Apparatus with three other women in 2013. Since then, most of my non-tutoring hours are spent performing, rehearsing, directing, and producing for the company. We were shortlisted for the Scottish Daily Mail Drama Award in 2014 and will be taking our newest work, The ME, to the Edinburgh Festival this summer. I also work at Time In Children's Arts Initiative, a program that teaches opera appreciation and fine art to Pre-K through Fourth Grade public school children from Harlem and the Bronx.I enjoy working with students to confront the challenges of a subject and then watching as the challenges begin to slip away and what was previously frustrating and incomprehensible to the students becomes a subject that they now enjoy learning about and studying. I believe I am a good tutor and teacher because I am patient, encouraging, and have good communication and classroom management skills. I do not get frustrated if my students do not understand something right away; instead, I look for an alternative way to explain whatever is confusing to my students. My goal is not simply to help my students improve their grades, but rather to teach reliable study skills, encourage interest in the subject, and, most importantly, instill a passion for learning.

I recently graduated from Harvard College. I hold a B.A. in History and a lot of textbooks. I love tutoring my favorite subjects, including History (obviously), Biology (I used to want to be a doctor), Spanish (I went to Costa Rica to learn about being a doctor), and the SAT (okay, maybe *favorite* is a stretch). I also teach chess, but that's more of a hobby. I also enjoy reading, creative writing, and perfecting the poached egg (the key is vinegar). In my spare time I act, perform improv, and think about how great dogs are.As a tutor, I believe my greatest strength is that I am not a textbook. I'm here to make even the driest material interesting and personally relatable, and to talk out difficulties when they arise. I hate memorizing, and would much prefer to make everything from Biology to History into exciting (if very small) stories that are not only easy to remember, but actively difficult to forget.I've had tutors that I hated going to, and tutors that I enjoyed spending my time with, and I do my best to emulate the latter. And, as always, I'm happy with your results when you are happy with your results. Or when your parents are happy with your results.

I always loved learning and excelled in school but only when I became a teaching assistant in college did I realize how much teaching is something I am great at and passionate about.I love to see my students excel and will work with them until they feel confident with their mastery of the material whether for a class or standardized test. I know that each student needs something different depending on their grade level, learning style, background, and academic goals and I tailor my teaching style to my students. My main goal when I tutor is to have my student leave the session knowing that they learned a ton and that their grades will show it!At the same time, my passion for the subjects I teach is contagious and I love to see my students get excited about a subject they previously thought was too challenging, dry, or boring. I like to make the material come alive. For example, when I teach biology, I love to interweave real life examples of how a scientific principle can be seen in nature or in our bodies.I graduated from Barnard College, Columbia University majoring in Linguistics but then did a post-bac for Pre-Med at Harvard and next year I will be going to medical school. My dual background in the humanities and sciences has given me knowledge in a wide range of subjects. I have experience tutoring anything from elementary school Math to High School English Literature to college level biology. I work with my students on what they are learning using the materials and the style your professor/ teacher prefers because I want my students to ace their tests and assignments!I took the MCAT exam for medical school, scoring in the 96th percentile and the 100th percentile (perfect score) in the psychology and sociology section of the exam. Since taking the exam, I have tutored for the exam and am eager to share everything I have learned in how I brought my score up. I know which subjects are 'high yield' and which can be brushed over. I have a very good sense of how to help my students structure their studying and I will work with them as much as they need to devise a plan as well as tutor them in subject-specific materials. I fought with the beast that is the MCAT and I want my students to crush it too!

The central dichotomy of my life has always been that of academics and the performing arts; as I have spent the last six years since graduating from Columbia University in New York auditioning and performing, I have also found myself drawn to working with kids. I have worked as a nanny and tutored kids between the ages of three and seventeen, and I feel especially qualified to work with students on the writing and verbal sections of the SAT and editing their personal statements and college essays. As a high schooler, I was one of those students who LOVED standardized tests; I have always viewed them as an exciting way to measure progress and hone in on, not only academic skills, but also time management, organization, and maintaining a sense of personal calm. In fact, I love the entire college application process because I think of it not as an opaque, mysterious world of judgment behind closed doors, but as the first opportunity in a student's life to find the perfect fit. The combination of test scores and personal statement should be seen as a contribution to a conversation that leads to a student ending up in an environment suited to their strengths.

I strongly value the power of intrinsic motivation in learningthat is, the power of learning for the sake of learning, rather than for external factors like good grades or others' approval. I believe that when youth and adults alike view school or learning as something to suffer through for a distant goal in the future (a "no pain no gain" mindset), their willpower eventually wears thin in times of stress and hardship. Teaching people to like to learn and succeed in a way that works for them gives them a value that lasts throughout life. I feel that I have been successful in teaching this message to my students in the past, and indeed saw encouraging results come from it.

I graduated from Harvard University, earning a Master of Education from the Graduate School of Education. I also earned my Bachelor of Arts in Comparative Human Development at The University of Chicago. While attending The University of Chicago, I mainly focused my major courses on adolescent development and school development. Additionally, during college, I worked as a homework tutor at a youth center, interned in the youth development department for a housing nonprofit, as well as interned for a nongovernmental organization in Kigali, Rwanda. After graduating from college, I worked for the Academy for Urban School Leadership (AUSL) as a Math+ tutor. Math+ was a math intervention program for Chicago Public Schools focusing on third through fifth grade students. As a Math+ tutor, I provided data-driven, small group math classes. After my stint with AUSL, I worked for By the Hand Club for Kids (BTH) as the 4th grade Team Leader. One aspect of BTH is providing afterschool programming for students in grades 1st through 12th. As a team leader, I assisted with homework, monitored an online reading program, and taught a Read- Aloud program. I also conducted home and school visits. These visits allowed me to build a partnership with my students' parents and teachers. Additionally, I was able to track academic progress and behavior. While attending Harvard Graduate School of Education, I interned at a nonprofit named Tutors for All as the Math Skill Program Coordinator, where I transitioned from tutoring to coaching. As the coordinator, I managed the weekly logistics for a math tutorial program. I coached twenty- three tutors on instruction and behavioral management. I assisted with professional development days by planning and facilitating breakout sessions, introducing new tutors to the program's protocols and policies, implementing strategies for effective instructions, and providing tips for behavior management. I used assessment data to make instructional changes such as strategically grouping students, pairing them with tutors and setting relative goals based on their academic ability. I also worked closely with my students' math teachers and lead tutors to develop a curriculum for a group of accelerated students. Lastly, I implemented different organization systems to track academic progress. As my background suggests, I enjoy tutoring reading and math. I have a stronger preference for math and more experience with elementary to beginning high school grades. As a tutor, I like to form a partnership with my tutee. I believe that it is important that we work together to overcome their academic challenges. Additionally, I like to create activities using the kinesthetic learning style because this approach allows for students to be interactive and hands on. Inasmuch, I want to engage my students' prior knowledge and build from what they know. Lastly, I provide opportunities for students to teach each other as well as teach me. This allows me to further evaluate their conceptual understanding of a given objective.Outside of academia, I enjoy cooking, art, watching movies, music, and reading books. I am also a social person who loves to meet new people, travel the world, and explore.

I have tutored, taught classes, and facilitated workshops on subjects ranging from SAT prep to chemistry to spoken word poetry, and I especially enjoy working with middle school and high school students. I firmly believe that tutoring can and should be funeven SAT prep! Working with a student individually allows the two of us to team up to tackle the material using a range of strategies until we find an approach that works for this particular student. My favorite subjects to tutor include writing and editing, whether we're working on a research paper, a college application essay, or reviewing grammar; public speaking; SAT prep; and study skills and organization, because each of these areas boosts overall academic success and builds a student's self-confidence. In any subject, I focus on study skills, critical thinking, and independent concept reinforcement so that soon the student will no longer need me to excel. Some of my own favorite subjects to study include languages (I've studied Arabic, Spanish, Latin, and a sprinkling of Japanese), medieval history, and electrical engineering. When I'm not tutoring, I spend my time writing and performing spoken word poetry, riding my bike around Boston, and learning to cook.

Yet, I am comfortable not only with college students, but with high school, middle school and even elementary school students. I am especially comfortable tutoring ACT Science and Math, as well as any math and science academic subjects. My consistent math and science workload in college has made me confident of my mastery and ability to tutor these subjects.Outside of academics, I am passionate about global health and helping underserved communities. I spent a summer working in Kisumu, Kenya on a malnutrition project and I plan to work in Nicaragua on a project focused on bringing clean water to underserved communities in the future. In my free time, I love playing and/or watching basketball or soccer, hiking, camping and spending time outdoors in general. I also enjoy watching movies and documentaries. Some of my favorite movies are Finding Nemo, Lord of the Rings, and Elf.I look forward to working with you!
