I'm a graduate of Columbia College Chicago; after exploring many fields of interest (writing, linguistics, computer science, and more), I completed a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Fashion Design graduating Cum Laude.As a tutor, I work to completely engage with a student's learning process and try to see the subject through their eyes. I stress conceptual understanding over formula memorization, but I'm also realistic about the demands of standardized testing and teach testing strategy as well as material. I'm passionate about good writing, and I love to work on students' reading and writing skills.When I'm not tutoring, I love to run in Prospect Park, listen to all kinds of interesting music, and devour books. I'm always trying to learn something new: right now, I'm writing my first long-form narrative and teaching myself to use the Linux terminal.

As a passionate educator with a Master's in Writing from Columbia College Chicago and a Master's in Library Science, I have over a decade of library and research experience with additional experience teaching writing to first-year college students. My specialties include AP English Language and Composition, AP English Literature and Composition, Creative Writing, Academic and Analytic essays. I received my Bachelor of Arts in History with a focus in Latino and African American History from the University of Illinois at Chicago. I received my Master of Arts in Teaching from Columbia College Chicago. I am a Golden Apple Scholar which has provided me with extensive experience outside of the classroom within the realm of education. I have taught in Chicago Public Schools for six years. While I tutor a broad range of subjects, I am most passionate about English, Literature, and History. I believe that it is possible for all students to not only learn subject material but to also find meaning and opportunity with the material they are studying.

I received my bachelor's degree in Cultural Studies in 2012, and in 2015 I received a master's in English. While working on my master's, I taught English 101 at the university I was attending. Prior to this, I received teacher training from the same university. My favorite aspect of teaching was the one-on-one interactions I would have with my students when they came for conferences or office hours. I believe that an important part of teaching is taking a personal interest in the students and helping them become self-motivated in their education.

I have been teaching English for 7 years. I have a Masters of Arts in English. My Bachelor's Degree is from Columbia College Chicago in Broadcast Journalism. I have taught in Chicago as an adjunct professor of English at East West University from 2016-2018. I moved to New York City in the summer of 2018. I started teaching High School ELA (English Language Arts) in the fall of 2018. I teach Middle school and High School, including IB courses at an International School in Manhattan. I taught College Writing, College Literature, Creative Writing, Rhetoric and Stylistics, Writing from Sources, and Film as Literature. I am currently teaching grades 6-12 where my students are learning such diverse subjects as the Hero's Quest, Dystopian Societies, Gothic, and film studies. I love teaching to my students the various sub-genres from literature and composition. Really helping my students think on their own, and actually realize that in each of them is a great writer and reader. I value academic integrity and when my students strive to do their best on their assignments. I strive for excellence in my students as I strive for the best in myself.

Laura is originally from the Chicago area, and has over twelve years of experience as a teacher, nine of those years teaching ESL and English studies. She worked as an English language teacher for over two years in South Korea, as well as in Cambodia, Scotland, and Guatemala. Her teaching experience spans all ages and levels, as well as more than 3.5 years of experience teaching online. She holds a TEFL certification, she can teach any and all grammar rules, and she excels at helping middle school through college-age students improve their writing, reading, and language skills. When she's not speaking to students all over the world, she loves to be active and outdoors. Some of her interests include art, literature, fitness/nutrition, surfing and she can never get enough of traveling! Last year, Laura moved to Austin, Texas where she has been enjoying the warm sunshine, delicious tacos, and fanastic live music!
