I am currently studying at the Sophie Davis School of Biomedical Education. This is an accelerated BS/MD program in CUNY City College. I am in my third year and am currently taking medical school courses. After my fifth year in City College, I will be transferring to a participating medical school in the northeast region. Before I began student teaching at P.S 149Q, I had doubts about teaching full-time. Not because I didn't like teaching, but because I doubted how effective I would be as an educator. Teachers' whom I've met throughout my journey had always described their jobs as a battlefield, and either ended their days' in victory or defeat. I've seen more defeated teachers than I want to admit, and could not help but feel insecure about my own abilities to make a difference. My mom said once that teaching was like performing surgery, explaining that I had the potential to shape a child's life. As I looked into my students' eyes during my first day of student teaching, I remembered her words of wisdom, and asked myself, "Can I do that?"I found the answer to that question midway through my student teaching. A student of mine was struggling immensely. My CT and I both knew he needed extensive one-on-one guidance; he seemed aware of that too. As I took him to the back of the room to help him with his math assignment, he had a dejected look on his face. I smiled at him and attempted to make him laugh, to no avail. His shame was like a leak, and it was bleeding from his body. Before I had a chance to say anything, he muttered, "I can't do this. I'm not learning." It wasn't said with heat, only miserable acceptance. I felt it then- a spark of defiance coursing through my body, and I knew that I couldn't let him continue believing that about himself. I turned his chair to face me, and I took his hands in mine. "Anthony," I said, "you have the ability to learn just like everyone else." He shook his head in disagreement. I nodded in return, smiling confidently. "Yes, you can," I continued, "your brain just learns differently from us." He looked at me then, and even though doubt still clouded his eyes, I also saw a glimmer of hope. "Common, lets work together to figure these questions out," I whispered enthusiastically.One period later, my desk indeed looked like a battlefield- manipulatives and eraser bits covered my entire desk; I was mentally exhausted. But the worksheet was complete, and Anthony was smiling a million dollar smile. "You did it, Anthony!" I said. He nodded and laughed giddily, clapping his hands. My heart burst with the joy and satisfaction of being able to restore Anthony's confidence, of giving him the hope to march onwards in his struggle to learn. That day I learned what teaching was all about- giving students the confidence that they can learn. Anthony didn't know this, but he also helped me realize that I wanted to continue doing that as an educator. While I finished student teaching and am still nervous, I am surer than ever that I picked the right career for myself. Anthony and I won that battle, and I anticipate many more victories to come.

I graduated from CUNY City College’s Biochemistry program with honors in liberal arts and science research. Growing up, in my opinion, is the most important part of adolescence. I grew up in a household where my mom, a single parent working many hours to make ends meet was out of the house a lot. As the oldest child I learned to start preparing dinner on the days that my mom didnt have time to. I set a good example for my sisters. I enforced rules such as bedtimes and I took the mantle and achieved the responsibility of the leadership position in my mothers absence. I did extracurricular activities and sports such as track & field and afterschool clubs. But towards sophomore year, my involvement in afterschool activities decreased, my mom got a new job with a different schedule that required me to pick up my sisters from school every day.I think that I had to grow up a little earlier than most kids around my age. Not many people that I know have grew up in the same circumstances that I did. I believe that this experience has and is continuing to make me grow into a more mature person with good character and strong leadership skills such as patience, determination, perseverance and self-sacrifice. I learned that there is a time and place for everything, which especially pertains to balancing schoolwork, social life and responsibilities. Many people especially my mother and sisters have too much reliance on me for something like that to be an option. Though my mother is everything for us and we would literally have nothing if it werent for her, there are even times when she says to me, where would we be without you, or youve helped me so much, I cant imagine how we would have had ended up without you.

After graduating in 2011 from the City College of New York, I worked as a consultant for Dr. Dewey who then recruited me from Brookhaven National Lab to the Feinstein institutes for Medical Research. That year, I entered the Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell, and joined the inaugural class as one of three PhD students of the new medical school.My dissertation project interrogated pre-clinical sex differences in the metabolic neural patterns associated with opioid pain management using18-fludeoxyglucose (18FDG) and micro positron emission tomography (MicroPET). I was able to show that distinct metabolic patterns of pain were sex-specific, and confirmed that an animal model could be useful in revealing distinct metabolic indicators of opioid withdrawal and improve the efficacy of therapeutic intervention.As a Research Scientist at the Feinstein Institutes for Medical Research, I oversee operations of the MicroPET imaging facility as part of the Center for Neurosciences. I have recentl studies include studies of the extracellular cold-inducible RNA-binding protein, (CIRP-/-) and wild type (WT) mice, before and after exposure to binge-alcohol levels. By quantifying glucose metabolism with 18FDG and MicroPET, and using brain-mapping analysis of the imaging data, we can determine if CIRP plays a role in alcohol-induced cognitive impairment. I have served as mentor to many undergraduate and some high school students, and very much enjoy sharing my knowledge base with those that enjoy science.

Hi, I am currently a 3rd year Ph.D. student in Mathematical Modeling in NY. I have a B.S in pure mathematics and a M.S in Applied and Computational Math. My friends say that they love my energy. I enjoy what I do or play and those things are mathematics and soccer.

I have been an educator for 10 years in both the NYC and Miami metropolitan areas and can honestly say I love what I do. After graduating from NYU as an undergraduate, I received my master's degree in education from CUNY City College as I knew from a young age that I wanted to pursue a career in education. With many years of experience in and out of the classroom, I have seen firsthand how students learn differently and how important it is to meet each student where they are at. Most importantly, learning should be fun and I love to use music and art as tools to make any lesson more engaging. I am patient and understanding and will always make sure to listen to every question asked. My goal is to ensure that you feel confident and comfortable with the material at hand and will not continue on with any instruction until we are on the same page. I truly believe that all questions are great questions and I welcome all curious and inquisitive minds! I look forward to meeting you!

I am passionate about teaching math to high schoolers. My specialty is being able to connect Mathematical concepts to real world and simplifying complex problems in order for the students to feel confident with their math knowledge.
