I am very happy to be a part of Varsity Tutors and have the opportunity to assist others achieve their goals!A bit about myself: I graduated from Hamilton College in 2008, majoring in World Politics with a minor in Russian Studies. During my time at Hamilton, I was privileged to work with a refugee assistance group that tutored recent immigrants in English and helped them pass their citizenship exams. Working with groups of all ages I learned that establishing a comfortable environment for learning makes a big difference in helping people move beyond their discomfort in a topic and makes them more willingly to engage with the material. Providing a fun and constructive environment for learning is a strategy I believe in for anyone I tutor. After college I worked for the inventor of the Segway and coached high school baseball before moving onto my Master's program in the UK. I graduated with honors from King's College London in 2012 with an MA in Intelligence & International Security. Using my coursework and interest in local history I wrote a dissertation on the British military and political strategy in Boston before the American Revolution. My graduate studies abroad provided an excellent setting for working with students of all ages and backgrounds from around the world and increased my ability to work effectively with a diverse group of people. When I completed my dissertation I staffed a state campaign and for the last 3 years I have worked for a private non-profit focusing on issues of canine welfare. In this role I worked closely with local law enforcement and municipal governments on a variety of projects. I recently left this position to begin my service with the US Army Reserve. In my spare time I like to hike with my dog (Watson), go fishing from my kayak, watch movies, read with my 2 year old godson and spend some time at my boxing club. For me studying has always been about finding ways of completing assignments that utilize the strengths we each have. Even the most daunting tasks like a dissertation can be broken down into very manageable parts. With the right attitude and a good support system, I hope to help students find ways to approach new topics confidently and efficiently.

I attended Hamilton College where I studied Biology and Government and graduated in 2012. While in college I sang in both the college choir and an all-female a cappella group. I also had the opportunity to study abroad in Tanzania where I designed and conducted an independent study project. After graduating, I moved back to the Boston area and I am currently a student at Suffolk University Law School.I have had the privilege of working with students in both academic and non-academic settings. I was a tutor for second grade students while in college and watched my students grow into confident individuals with increased reading skills. I also worked as a sailing instructor for several years at a junior sailing club where I taught introductory racing, basic navigation, and basic sailing to kids ages 8-14.I strongly believe that all students have the ability to succeed in school with hard work and dedication. Much of that capacity for success comes from students believing in themselves, and I hope to encourage students to be confident in their ability to succeed in the classroom and in life. I have a passion and enthusiasm for learning that I want to share with others. By strengthening academic development, students can also strengthen personal development and I hope to use my experiences to help students be successful and reach their goals.

I'm a rising sophomore at Hamilton College, a very small but very good Liberal Arts School in upstate New York. I really enjoy it there because of the great selection of humanities courses - which are my primary interest - and the focus on critical thinking that's placed on just about everything. I believe that critical thinking is one of the most important skills someone can learn. Most of the subjects that I enjoy - history, government, political science, philosophy, etc. - are subjects that inherently deal with concepts and creations made by mankind, and thus they reflect man's imperfect nature. The ability to analyze these concepts and creations with a mind for the why, the how, and the strengths and the weaknesses is invaluable. Analytical and critical thinking is something I will push for in all subjects that I tutor, including mathematics, as it is equally - if not more important there. I'm not always such a nerd though. I love action movies and video games the same as a lot of people my age. I love indie music and I like to jam on my guitar. I also have something of a dry sense of humor, but I appreciate any and all jokes.

I love learning and I especially love the challenge of learning new things and pushing myself to be a better person. Coupled with my love of learning has always been a deep regard for teaching. While a student at Hamilton College, I was selected by professor recommendation to work as a tutor at the Quantitative Literacy Center, a job I held for three years. At Hamilton I practiced the ability to listen to my tutee, and then to assist my tutee in breaking down complex logical problems into simpler, manageable parts. A teacher must first and foremost have mastery of the subject material. A tutor must both understand the subject material, and understand the manner in which students fail to comprehend that same material. I pride myself on my ability to listen and understand what aspect of a concept is difficult for a student, even when the student cannot clearly articulate her own problem. In addition to my experience at Hamilton, I spent a summer teaching science to 4th and 5th graders with Exploration Summer Programs and a Summer teaching chemistry to 8th graders with Breakthrough Collaborative. In both of these programs I developed my own curriculum and planned all of the lessons. I learned how to explain concepts in an engaging and clear manner to a wide age range of students. While my traditional experience focused on the sciences, I am an avid reader and musician and am fully capable of tutoring a wide variety of subjects. As of late, I have been reading a lot of "Johns": Irving, Steinbeck, and Green. My other passion is music. I love singing and playing the guitar, cello, and piano.

Most recently, I worked as a STEM instructor at Launch Math and Science Centers in NYC on the Upper West Side. That experience made me realize how passionate I am about engaging students in the STEM field and education in general and how important it is to make learning a fun process. I love tutoring students in math, science, and economics because I have a strong background and foundation in these areas. I also wish that I had been introduced to the STEM and economics fields at a younger age, therefore my goal with tutoring is to inspire the students that I work with. I love tutoring in economics because I believe it provides essential concepts for any field that a student is eager to pursue. For example, I have found economics to be extremely applicable to the healthcare field, which is one of the main reasons that I chose to major in it.In addition, I lived abroad in Morocco for 10 years and had the opportunity to help students prepare for their AP exams and applications to universities in the United States. I began tutoring during my freshman year at Hamilton College, during which I volunteered at the local refugee center in Utica, NY. As an English tutor, I worked with the refugees to improve their written and oral language skills. This opportunity exposed me to the exciting and rewarding world of tutoring and motivated me to continue down this line of work. During my junior and senior years at Hamilton, I worked both as a German Teaching Assistant in the German department and as a Writing Tutor at the Hamilton Writing Center. As a T.A., I helped my students develop study skills, complete homework, and improve their German language skills. As a writing tutor, I worked with peers to strengthen their essays, develop writing techniques, and explore their ideas on paper. These experiences helped me learn the importance of patience, encouragement, and flexibility while tutoring. I feel best when I know my student feels more sure and excited about a subject. That's when I've truly done my job! I believe it's important to tailor each lesson to the student's personal learning style and interests. That way a subject becomes approachable and intriguing for the student, as opposed to intimidating and stressful.I currently live and work in Germany as the recipient of a Fulbright Scholarship. I work at local middle and high schools, teaching English to students and running an "American Group" in my free time. I am also a freelance Writing Tutor for an education consulting company in Beijing. These vast and varied experiences has exposed me to students of different ages, ethnicities, and abilities. I'm a math tutor who focuses on helping students truly understand how math works, not just memorize steps. I believe that every student can succeed in math with the right support and approach, and I aim to make sessions clear, engaging, and confidence-building. My teaching style is patient and interactive. I break problems down into manageable steps and explain the reasoning behind each one, so students can see the "why" instead of just the "what." I also ask questions throughout sessions to encourage students to think critically and stay involved in the learning process. I work with students at different levels, whether they need help building foundational skills or tackling more advanced algebra topics. If a student is feeling stuck or frustrated, I adjust my approach, use simpler examples, and help them rebuild confidence step by step. My goal is for students to leave each session not only with the correct answer, but with the skills and confidence to solve similar problems on their own. If you're looking for a supportive and clear algebra tutor, I'd love to help!
