I have also earned a Master in the Art of Teaching degree from Marygrove College in 2004 and a Master of Science in Curriculum and Instruction from Western Governors University in 2021. I have spent my entire career (21 years) teaching middle school students English-Language Arts, as well as a few years of Science. While I am new to tutoring, I have quite a bit of experience in teaching and working with students. I believe learning should be enjoyable, and fun, when possible. Education is vital for a meaningful, rewarding life, so when it is time to make critical decisions, the tools of logic and problem-solving can be put to use. I try to help all of my students develop skills which they will use not only in an academic setting, but also in the real-world. In my free time, I enjoy watching my two children compete in swimming, watching sports, and reading.
I believe in helping students develop the skills that lie within him/her so that they are prepared for all education situations in life.
I realize picking a tutor is an important decision as you would like your child to have the most rewarding experience possible. From working with handicapped younger students when I was in high school to a recent experience with working with Russian adults learning English, helping students of all ages achieve their educational goals for a more fulfilling life has always been how my life gets fulfilled! I am a cum laude graduate of Drew University (theatre arts), Marygrove College (masters in teaching) and Rowan University (graduate endorsement in special education). I have learned a massive amount in the areas of how to capitalize on the interests and strengths of individuals through the use of respecting and understanding your childs learning styles and strengths. This gives me the ability to make learning interesting and challenging, but not daunting. Im the type of teacher that will not give up on a student and will continue to be creative and find and use current research to get the help he/she needs. Students seem to like me and look forward to our sessions because they know I generally care about them as people and want all their goals to come true( not just their academic ones). In my free time, I usually exercise my songwriting and playwriting skills in creating childrens musicals some which are currently being toured in different area schools. I knew I wanted to teach by the third grade. I went into teaching right after high school and graduated from Wayne State University with a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education four years later. I eventually acquired a Masters in the Art of Teaching from Marygrove College. I've taught grades K-6 as a full time classroom teacher in Michigan, Arkansas, and Texas. I've taught online to Ohio and two different countries. I worked as a math specialist for two years of my career. I've also worked as a scorer for standardized tests in math and writing. I opened my own daycare and tutoring services (Mrs. Teacher's Tutoring Lab) while raising my own little one. Therefore, I've been involved in all aspects of education and enjoyed every bit of it. I've developed a lot of skills over the years to close learning gaps, enhance the high achiever, and help the average student reach new goals; so that all can have a pleasant and interesting learning experience. I'm looking forward to working with you.

I am graduate of Eastern Michigan University, I recieved my Bachelors in Japanese Language and Culture. After graduating college with my undergrad, I went back to Japan to teach English for two years. Have been teaching Japanese to 6-12 graders for 21 years. I grew up in a bilingual household, so Japanese is my third language, I love learning other languages and cultures. I love to teach my students the way I learned Japanese in high school, giving them lots of examples, mnemonics, or fun ways to better remember things. I have always believed that in order to learn a language, you need to learn about the culture. I enjoy discussing my time in Japan with my students and talk about the amazing culture.I travel to Japan about every two years (except when there's a pandemic), I also enjoy traveling to Europe to see family.

I have been with Varsity Tutors for a year now, and have worked with over 20 different students. I am very comfortable using the platform, and I have hundreds of different files with activities, games, worksheets, and power point presentations to meet the students' need regardless of the subject area. Students will typically not have to bring any materials with them to a session whatsoever, as I can provide everything we will need.I recently had one student who began his school year with a C/D average and he just finished this year on the A/B honor roll. I was assigned another student part way through the school year, and from his mid-year standardized I Ready assessment to his end of the year test, he raised his reading score by 69 points and he went up 45 points in math.I like to maintain close and frequent communication with the parent(s) or guardian. I typically include very detailed notes in my invoice explaining what was covered during that session, student successes with the material, areas of concern, and goals for the next upcoming meeting. I also frequently use both email, Varsity Tutor messaging, and text messaging to keep lines of communication open between the parent and myself, and parents have access to my personal cell phone number if needed. I feel that this communication is extremely important for the success of the student.I taught second grade in a regular classroom for 25 years. When my team decided to become departmentalized, I was responsible for teaching all reading, phonics, language arts, and some writing to the students. Because this included three separate homeroom classes, it was often upwards of 75 students per year. I was also the acting Head Teacher for my school for 5 years, assuming the responsibility of the principal in his/her absence. I was awarded the Martha-Holden Jennings Scholarship award after being nominated by my principal. I received my bachelor's degree from Ohio Northern University in 1995, my Master's Degree from Marygrove College, and my Educational Specialist degree from the University of Dayton.I believe that all students learn differently and that it is the teacher's responsibility to adjust his/her teaching style to meet the needs of the student. If a student does not seem to be grasping the information or skill, the teacher must alter the presentation style in order to try to gain understanding. I tend to try to implement many different forms of lessons, including using a game-format, using manipulatives, and relating topics to fun literature. I like to have students take some responsibility for their own learning by keeping lines of communication open so that they can express their needs or frustrations. When working one-on-one with a student through Varsity Tutors, I prefer to keep a relaxed atmosphere and learning environment so that students feel comfortable and relaxed. This atmosphere often looks very different from a typical classroom environment, simply due to the fact that we are working one-on-one. In summary, I have many years of experience, including my year+ with Varsity Tutors, and I believe that all students can be successful in their learning.
