My name is Elise Newman and I am a recent graduate of MIT. I will be pursuing a PhD in the fall and have some time off this summer. While at MIT, I came to really enjoy teaching.I have degrees in Physics and Linguistics, and am proficient in a variety of subjects including (but not limited to) math, physics, English, and foreign languages. I am fluent in German (both speaking and reading), and I studied Spanish extensively in school.My teaching experience includes tutoring throughout middle and high school, as well as several teaching assistantships at MIT. I graduated from the University of Arizona with dual Bachelor of Science degrees in Mathematics and Physics. I continued my education at MIT and earned a Master of Science degree in Electrical Engineering. After graduating high school from Phillips Academy Andover, I am now a rising First-Year in the class of 2024 at Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Throughout my life, I have been fascinated by all things STEM, but in particular, I have become especially passionate about math and chemistry. At MIT, I plan to major in applied mathematics, physics, or chemical engineering to pursue these interests. In high school, I was also involved in the Math Study Center as a volunteer tutor where I would meet with students from all courses to provide assistance with homework or classwork. During my three years as a study center tutor, I met with students in algebra 1 all the way up to students in multivariable calculus and linear algebra. By far, I enjoyed tutoring calculus the most due to its immense applicability and adaptability. I am also particularly passionate about organic chemistry and have spent much of my high school career taking classes and doing projects on the subject. In my experience, tutoring is most effective when students are given the opportunity to discover results independently. My role as a tutor is to guide and facilitate this journey of discovery. I've been teaching in some capacity since I was in high school; first tutoring peers in math and science through National Honor Society, then providing more informal one-on-one help to fellow students at MIT. I've also worked extensively teaching swim lessons for the past five years, particularly to beginners. Both in and out of the pool, I believe that a good lesson is one where the student is doing the thinking. When I first entered college as a chemistry major at UC Berkeley, my interest in this subject was spurred by cool demonstrations with explosive fireball and vibrant colors. Over the past eleven years and a student and researcher, my passion for chemistry has grown and I can appreciate not only the fun aspects in the laboratory and classroom, but how chemical principles undergird all of life and nature, allowing me to see what I've learned at work around me in the world. A deep knowledge of the principles of chemistry have granted me the ability to see beauty in the world and in everyday life, from baking delicious cookies to walking through serene forest groves. I grew up in the Boston area and now live in Citrus County, Florida. I graduated from MIT in chemical engineering and worked for many years as a chemical process engineer, so I have a strong background in math and science, especially chemistry and thermodynamics. When the pandemic hit us, I moved to Florida and did part-time work as a chess tutor, then became a substitute teacher in the middle and high schools in our district.
