Hello! My name is Maribel. I am a graduate student at Northern Illinois University. I have a Master of Arts in English Education with a minor in Business Administration. As a tutor and teacher, I have really enjoyed working with primary and secondary school level students. I am currently working on my second Graduate level degree in Accounting and Taxation. I love learning and helping student reach their academic and life goals. My coursework in the field of literacy, reading, and writing pedagogy has uniquely prepared me to teach primary and secondary level literary criticism and research, and essay composition. As a native Spanish speaker, I also have extensive knowledge in reading, writing, and speaking Spanish and have seen great results when teaching young and adult learners. My teaching philosophy is to help learners become knowledgeable in various disciplines and I take a multi-disciplinary approach to help long-term memorization of valuable skills. I strive to create engaging learning opportunities for students in language arts while focusing on textual analysis and critical thinking skills.I am as a results-driven tutor and hope to be a positive influence in making higher education accessible to all.

I'm enthusiastic about getting students excited to absorb material and develop powerful thinking habits.I have three years of tutoring/teaching experience with students from first grade to graduate students.By training, I'm a philosopher (MA, BA), but I also have background in religious studies (BA) and cognitive science (a minor). Cognitive science spans linguistics, psychology, anthropology, computer science, philosophy, and education. My background in logic helps me teach all standardized tests. I scored around the 95th percentile on the GRE Verbal. I can help students sharpen those skills, and any test below that level. I can easily help with mathematics up to the GED level.I've spent the last two years giving writing consultations and teaching a business composition course. I'm passionate about helping with writing and the language arts.
I have a Masters of Science in Applied Physics and a Bachelors of Science in Physics from Northern Illinois University and The Ohio State University, respectively. I have been tutoring for 12 years in a range of mathematics and science courses from algebra to AP Calculus and physics to astronomy, respectively. I tutored math at a private tutoring center where I became very adept at helping students of varying ages, approximately 5 to 18.While earning my masters degree I taught introductory physics laboratories for two years. I have also been a math instructor at a second private learning center where I learned techniques in helping students not only academically but boost their confidence, enhance their strengths and recognize as well as work on their weaknesses. When tutoring, I teach students how ask the appropriate questions to help them solve their problems. I start by asking leading questions and get the student to reason through the problem rather than simply showing them or having them memorize procedures. This method gets them to be an active participate and not merely an "audience of one." I believe that each student is unique and I tailor my methods of teaching to fit their needs. Many problems can be explained in multiple ways, different ways benefiting different students. For example, some students work better visually and some through auditory means.I enjoy helping students learn because I like sharing the knowledge I spent considerable time acquiring with others and helping make it theirs, too. I particularly enjoy tutoring mathematics and science to educate and inspire the next generation of scientists and engineers. My favorite subjects to teach are physics and astronomy. Outside of academia, amateur astronomy, along with grilling and watching and reading science fiction are my hobbies.
I am a graduate of Northern Illinois University. I received my Bachelor of Science in Education with a focus in Special Education. I am licensed to teach 1-6 in all subject areas. I am currently a tutor at Huntington Learning Center and a First Grade Teacher at Welch Elementary school in Naperville. I am passionate about making learning fun and applying what is taught to real life situations. It amazes me the different ways students learn and I encourage them to be themselves. There is power in struggle, it can help shape growth mindsets and that is when light bulb moments happen. I make sure my students feel both seen and heard. They will not only gain knowledge on academic subject areas but also their self esteem will elevate.
I obtained my Bachelor of Arts in Spanish Translation & Business from Northern Illinois University in May 2013. I have worked professionally as a translator and interpreter for over six years, and I also spent a portion of my undergraduate studies in Madrid, Spain. My formal education in Spanish is what sparked my passion for language in general, but it is my many memories and experiences living and experiencing Spanish culture that drove me to carry out my fervor for the language.I tutored students at the high school level throughout my undergraduate career, and I believe that as a person who learned Spanish formally myself, it is easier for me to communicate the concepts of the language in an effective manner that is more receptive to the student. My formal education in the language not only allows me to communicate Spanish language principles efficiently, but also gives me the tools necessary to show the connections between all Latin based languages and word origins, which provides a better overall understanding of the way language functions.Outside of academia, I thoroughly enjoy the arts and am an avid fan of a wide variety of music. I was vocally trained for many years, and have also studied some music theory, as I come from a very musically inclined family. I have always linked my passion for music and the Spanish language together, because in a way, music is just another language. As a person who has discovered their true passion, I will do everything within my abilities to ensure that my students develop a fundamental aptitude for the Spanish language.

I am in my 6th year of professional, full-time teaching and have a passion for helping others academically! Education is a major key to success so that students may critically think, problem solve, and learn how to be independent learners. Since my retirement, I have gone back to sub at the school I last taught at and also do some private tutoring. While I tutor a broad range of subjects, I am most passionate about Math. In my experience helping struggling students, I have been able to find alternative ways to present the material so it can be easily understood.
Teaching, or in other words, motivating people to want to learn is my life's calling. I acquire knowledge for its own sake, and encourage others to do the same. I have been teaching all types of people for nearly 20 years. I was educated via life. I have traveled the world and experienced several cultures. While I did attend college and received extensive training via the military, I tend to remember many details of both the thousands of hours I have spent in the classroom, both teaching and as a student, and the world that I have observed. I believe I can teach almost anything because teaching is an intensely personal endeavor. It is my job to motivate you to want to learn whatever it is you trying to learn. From there, my job is to guide you so you can not only discover for yourself, but keep discovering beyond my influence. In general, my favorite topics to teach are history and science. In history lies the importance of why things are because of us humans. Science is raw objective knowledge.
I am a young, vibrant teacher with a strong passion for education. I believe that education is the most powerful tool anyone can have, and I am here to help your student find success and confidence! Motivating and inspiring students is my favorite (and most important) part of my job.
I first became interested in helping others when I switched my major at Northern Illinois University to concentrate on family and individual development. Soon after, I began my job as a corp member, working with students in the high school, specifically with English skills. This experience made me realize how much I enjoyed working with students in multiple capacities; as a mentor and tutor mainly. I have worked with students who are freshman in high school, but were reading at a fifth grade level. My passion is helping students achieve success through education. My experiences showed me what many public schools lacked when it comes to aiding youth. I see myself as a resource available for students who may struggle academically.
I have a BA in Organizational/Corporate Communications from Northern Illinois University, which I chose based on my lifelong love of reading and writing. I also have minors in both Spanish and Economics.I have always been an avid learner and love supporting others as they learn and expand their skills. My main experiences working with students come from my times spent as a summer school teacher, after-school tutor, and sibling homework helper.I understand that all individuals have different learning styles and that it is important to find the best ways to learn that work for you. I am very enthusiastic about helping students feel accomplished once they have mastered new knowledge and skills.
I am a graduate of Northern Illinois University. I received my Bachelors of Art in Sociology. After I graduated I decided to work full time as a manager in Retail Store but with that I have started to tutor my cousins. My sociology studies have equipped me with insights into human behavior, social structures, and learning dynamics, allowing me to tailor my teaching methods to each student's unique needs.
As an PhD student in a biomedical sciences program, I am deeply passionate about biology and chemistry, supported by my Master's degree in Biotechnology and Bachelor's degree in Biology. With over a year of experience as a substitute teacher across K-12, I have developed a tailored teaching approach that accommodates diverse learning styles, particularly for middle school students. I thrive in creating interactive and engaging lessons, drawing on my background in STEM education, which includes teaching coding and environmental science. My goal is to foster a supportive learning environment where students can connect theoretical concepts to real-world applications, such as understanding the vital roles of proteins in biological processes. I believe that with patience and clarity, every student can achieve academic success, and I look forward to inspiring the next generation of scientists.
I am a recipient of Who's Who Among America's teaching award. I love tutoring students so I can get to know them and help them improve skills in reading and math. I have been tutoring students for the last seventeen years. I have also done home-bound tutoring for students with special needs. I have been a special education teacher and love working one to one or in small groups with students I tutor. I have a Bachelor's degree in Special Education from Illinois State University, a Graduate degree in Curriculum and Instruction from Concordia University, and another Advanced Graduate degree from Northern Illinois University as a Reading Specialist. I enjoy tutoring in writing and math, but my passion is tutoring in reading because I struggled with learning how to read when I was in school. I am passionate about helping my students improve writing, math, and reading because I struggled in school with those subjects.
I graduated from Southwestern Illinois University in Edwardsville with a BS in Mathematics Education. My first job was teaching junior high school math in East St. Louis. Some of my students were nearly as old as I. It was quite an experience for a first year teacher. Very challenging. I moved to the northern part of the state and taught middle school and high school in a small district of 7000 students for 16 years. These experiences were varied. I team taught in a school with no walls. We had students working independently with no direct instruction. Each student was given independent tutoring and allowed to progress at their own pace. I also taught computer intro courses. I moved to Chicago in 1989. I taught high school algebra, geometry, and algebra 2 until I retired in 2016. I also tutored students who were prepping for the high stakes standardized tests they take as juniors. I taught after school programs and summer classes for students who were making up credits in order to graduate. I have learned to adjust my teaching approach for the students I have before me. I understand the concept of learning styles. I have experience with students who are bilingual and are struggling with English as a second language. I have worked with students of all skill levels. I have tried to remain healthy by running and going to the fitness center daily. I enjoy keeping current on the news and going out with friends. I am using this extreme stay at home time to enhance my online tutoring skills and to explore the technology that is being employed to bring education into students' homes. I have also explored the possibilities that this unprecedented time in history has caused some to contemplate a new reality for education. Education may never return to what it was before.
I am a certified teacher with a master's degree in Education which I received from Long Island University, Brooklyn Campus. My specialization is in TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages), but I also teach elementary school subjects. I studied Elementary Education and Anthropology in my undergraduate studies. Since I have a love for travel and learning about other cultures, I have lived and worked in three foreign countries; I taught English to university students in Kyrgyzstan through the United States Peace Corps and high school students in Guadalajara, Mexico and studied German while working as an au pair in Germany. While working on my master's degree, I taught adult immigrants in Flushing, Queens who wanted to improve their English. After graduating with my master's degree, I taught academic ESOL, essay writing, and adult continuing education at a city college in Queens, NY. Following that, I taught ESL to predominantly Egyptian, Arabic speaking, students at a high school and elementary school in New Jersey. I enjoy working with students of all ages. Working one one one with students is especially rewarding. Throughout my teaching career, I have provided private lessons to students in standardized tests, reading, writing, study skills and math. I believe in student-centered, hands-on learning. I help all of my students with study skills and overcoming barriers to study such as vocabulary and skipped gradients. I have traveled throughout Europe and love to learn about other cultures and lands. I also enjoy interior design, cooking and traveling. I am happy to be a part of Varsity Tutors and I look forward to meeting new students!
My tutoring philosophy is rooted in the belief that students flourish when they are invited into a community of inquiry one that challenges them, supports them, and encourages them to see politics not only as an academic discipline but as a lived experience. I often think of teaching as cultivating a diverse garden: each student arrives with unique strengths, needs, and perspectives, and my role is to create the conditions in which all of them can grow. I aim to guide students with openness, curiosity, and a commitment to helping them develop as thinkers, citizens, and members of an intellectual community. Additionally, I love political science so much that my B.A., M.A., and PhD are all from this field. Comparative Politics, International Relations, and American Politics are my greatest strengths.
I completed my PhD in Economics at NIU, my MA in Economics At SUNY Buffalo. During my time in graduate school, I worked as an adjunct instructor in Economics at 3 different colleges. After graduation I worked as a Visiting assistant professor at a university. I have taught microeconomics, macroeconomics, money and banking, managerial economics. We all apply economic principles everyday without paying attention. I am passionate about teaching student to better understand the world around them and how their decision making, government policies affect the global economy. I love to teach college students as well as high school seniors. The next generation's understanding of economic principles will greatly help the nation's economy.
My 30+ years of teaching secondary mathematics has taught me each student is an individual who has unique issues with learning math. I firmly believe that if I listen well, I can find out what issues have to be addressed to help each student learn math well. The goals of each student is also unique and I will do everything to help each student reach their goals and not try to have every student learn the same way.
I have a natural ability to connect with and educate people of all ages, which I have been doing for more than 16 years. My personal foundation is my enthusiasm for helping others. My mother taught early childhood development, and I just inherited her love of pouring into little people. Since my college days, when students still carried books, I've had experience working with students. I would assist my classmates while they worked on their class presentations, and it was simple for me to see how the content should be arranged. As soon as I learned something, I would impart it to someone else. Then people started coming to me for advice, so I decided to make it my career in 2006 and started teaching postsecondary nutrition science courses. I rapidly rose to the position of top professor at the school, and there was always a waiting list for my classes. My education began long before I entered a traditional school because my mother worked in early childhood development, but I formally began in an elementary magnet school, continued on to Morgan Park High School, then graduated and attended Northern Illinois University and completed my degree in four years. I went on to earn my master's degree in public health and finished my dietetic coursework to become a Registered dietitian. At Northcentral University, I'm finishing up a doctoral degree with a focus on executive function development, persistence, early college transition, and social capital principles. I can tutor in the areas of nutrition science, food service math, executive functioning development, and dietetic exam preparation, public speaking, writing; but I am most passionate about executive functioning development (time management, organization, attention, and self-control) because there are so many resources, tools, and strategies that can be shared with everyone. My approach to teaching is to make the classroom a welcoming and comfortable place where students may explore their interests and learn more about their interests while turning those interests into information that will help them in their chosen goals. I firmly believe in providing pupils with structure and standards so they can develop with support and interdependence. I provide useful information and technologies that extend learning outside of the classroom. Students need to feel confident that what they are trying to learn is doable and attainable; this is why my tutoring approach is friendly and accountability focused.
I am currently a second grade teacher with 24 years of teaching experience in grades K-8. I've taught self contained classes, as well as ESL resource. I'm a mom of 2 sons and 4 dogs, and I can't wait to work with you!
I received my Bachelor of science in Biology from Roosevelt University. I received my Master of Science in Biology and Doctorate in Adult and Higher Education from Northern Illinois University. Teaching Biology is my passion. I currently teach Biology at Fayetteville Technical Community College in North Carolina. During my 7 years here, I have taught Anatomy & Physiology, microbiology, biochemistry, organismal biology and general biology. My approach as a tutor is: 1. To identify and tackle the topics where students need the most understanding. 2. To help build students skill set and confidence by teaching study strategies for success in their discipline. 3. To engage the student in practice to prepare for assessment. My goal is to enhance student learning and performance, resulting in higher grades. I believe in the power of education to transform lives and families for generations. I am grateful for the opportunity to be part of a student's journey toward achieving their goals.
I am a teacher with over 20 years of experience. I received my Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education with a focus on Language Arts, Social Science, and Music from Northern Illinois University. I received my Masters of Music Education from VanderCook School of Music in Chicago. I am a lifelong learner and hope to impart my love of learning on all the students that I tutor. In my spare time, I enjoy reading, singing and playing guitar, hiking and biking, and spending quality time with friends and family.
Since I was a little girl, history has been in my blood, although being a historian was never my plan (I wanted to be an actress). Growing up I was fascinated with Abraham Lincoln and the untimely passing of such a prominent public figure. I loved every trip to the Chicago Historical Society (known today as the Chicago History Museum) as a child. I enjoyed reading about the Puritans and the Native American culture. At this point I'm comfortable classifying myself as a historian although it took me awhile to get to this point in my life. In 1999, I received my B.A. in History from Loyola University Chicago and in 2002, I received my M.A. in Public History from the same school. I then went on to earn my Ph.D. in American History from Northern Illinois University in 2011.I teach college history online full time and I have taught numerous survey and upper-division American history classes at local "traditional" colleges and universities. When I teach, I don't necessarily focus on the facts of history, but on the larger transitions. I want students to understand how history has changed over time. I also try to convey to students that history can be fun to learn. In my personal life, I am the mother of two small children and I have been married for fifteen years. I workout regularly, but I also enjoy being a couch potato. I love being with my kids and husband. Oh and I love Doctor Who! I also enjoy spending time with my friends, debating current issues, history, and historiography.
I have a Masters in Economics and a Masters in Statistics, both from Northern Illinois University. I love learning, and I love teaching, which also gives me chances to learn, whether about others, or about how to better understand and present knowledge to others.
I appreciate my students and want them to succeed. I have many years of experience assisting students of all ages. I received my PhD in English at Northern Illinois University and currently work as a professor at an Atlanta university. I have taught middle school, high school, and college English. I have expertise in all language arts areas and test prep, such as the SAT, ACT, and GRE tests. I also have experience helping students prepare for the SSAT and ISEE exams. I think an added benefit is that I get along well with students of all kinds. My goal is to assist all students with their test objectives so they can achieve academic success now and in the future.
My name is Alexander Cumbo and am a 22 year old undergraduate student studying both Math and Computer Science at Northern Illinois University. I am very passionate about math and programming and hope to share the joy of learning it with others. I am also half Japanese and have been studying it for about 5 years now. Although I am not as good as a native, I am more than comfortable teaching beginners and helping people get started.
As a passionate educator, I am committed to helping students build confidence in their mathematical and writing abilities. With experience facilitating educational programming and tutoring peers in various subjects, I strive to create a comfortable and non-judgmental learning environment. My approach focuses on meeting students where they are, using engaging methods to demystify math concepts and foster a growth mindset. I believe that anyone can excel in math, writing, and education, in general, with the right support and encouragement.
I teach students to write with clarity and grace on the level of the sentence, paragraph, and essay. I like to think of what I do as helping students make meaning and learn the finer points of writing well. I enjoy teaching students to comprehend what they read and write about it with style and flair.
I'm Karen Lopez, an educator with a heart for empowering every student. My career in math education is driven by a simple yet profound belief: everyone can and should have access to quality math education. This belief fuels my passion for making STEM subjects approachable and engaging, especially for students in marginalized communities. Teaching, for me, is not just a profession; it's a mission to unlock every student's potential.
I love helping others with processes I've found difficult at times myself. Having struggled with incompatible teaching methods, I know they can make all the difference in how successful a student is at a given assignment or in a class overall.
I attended Northern Illinois University. I earned my Bachelor of Science in Education degree in 2004, where I graduated on the Dean's List. While attending college, I worked at the child care center on campus.Since I was a young child, I knew that I wanted to work with children. I have taught preschool, kindergarten, first grade, and second grade in various schools. One fun fact about me is that for my first teaching job, I taught in the same school that I attended as a child. It was strange teaching with some of my former teachers at first but then I was able to learn so much from them.I have 20 years of education experience. I have tutored students from age 4 to 40 in reading, phonics, writing, math, study skills, homework support, and ACT and SAT prep. My favorite subject to tutor would be language arts. I love working with students on reading, writing, phonics, spelling, etc.
Looking for an opportunity to help kids of all ages advance in Math!I have 10 years of tutoring elementary math, middle school math, pre-algebra, and algebra I. I have worked about 5 years doing private tutoring. I also have worked about 5 years at a Math Learning Center called Mathnasium, and learned a lot about the math education process in all of this time. Most of the time, math class struggles are due to gaps in learning from previous year's math classes. Math really builds on itself from year to year.My philosophy is to help with any homework that is due, and then spend any remaining time covering concepts from previous years that may need some strengthening. For example...simpliyfing fractions will be difficult if you don't know your multiplication/division facts...so I would work on those topics if simplifying is difficult. For the younger kids, playing a game or two to break up the hour is always a great idea. Using visuals is great for any student of any age, particularly younger ones, so I will always draw/write things out, and encourage students to show all of their work. I will try to make math as fun as it can be!!
