I am currently pursuing a Master's in Design Engineering from Brown University and the Rhode Island School of Design. I graduated in Smith College's class of 2025, receiving a Bachelor's, highest honors, in Computer Science with a concentration in Interdisciplinary Making and a minor in Mathematics. Within these fields, I specialize in both computational geometry and robotics, meaning I can assist with learning related to: - Discrete Mathematics - Combinatorics - Graph Theory - Geometry - Programming (C, Java, Python, etc.) - Software Engineering / Web Development - Arduino / Raspberry Pi - Circuitry - Etc. Additionally, I hold a University Diploma of French Studies from Universit Grenoble Alpes in Grenoble, France. I can assist with French speaking, reading, writing, and listening practice for both conversational and academic settings.

I am currently a tenured professor of English at Bergen Community College in New Jersey. As a former professional writer and editor, I have extensive experience working with all levels to help students become better critical thinkers, analytical readers, and writers.
I went to Smith College, where I completed majors with honors in English Language and Literature and Art History. I did my graduate work at Harvard University, where I became a Master of Education. I have always loved language and loved learning, which is why tutoring/teaching is a perfect match for meand you. With my help and the right tools, all of my students are able to overcome any difficulties that their studies might present, because each of my students is guaranteed the opportunity to express him or herself to the best of his or her abilities. I believe that one of my best qualities as a tutor is my skill at inspiring confidence in my students, so they feel comfortable expressing themselves, regardless of their level of ability. In my sessions, I put my clients at ease in such a way that even the most timid student is able to make the most of his or her time with me. Perhaps the secret is that many students are grateful to be in a session where they feel as though they are part of a clan, where relationships are based on respect for one another, and where ideas are listened to and discussed equally, and finally, where it is possible to express oneself in a sarcasm-free zone. While many teachers find it easiest to remain anchored to textbooks, I strive to find innovative ways of teaching that address the diverse needs of all of my students. In addition to my integration of technology into the curriculum in my sessions, I offer a variety of approaches to the disciplines.Although coverage of material is crucial, it is more important to teach students skills than things; also, students learn skills best through an interactive teaching style that demands their participation and challenges their abilities. Certainly, all students need grounding in their disciplines, and direct instruction has its place but I am not as interested in whether students know these concepts; as I am in if they can put them to critical use. My teaching philosophy has both traditional and radical roots, and rests, not only on my being an expert in my field, but on my being a partner in learning with my students.I look forward to our work and sharing my love of knowledge with you.
My name is Grace Apodaca and I am a student at Smith College in Northampton, MA. I am an engineering major who is passionate about research. I currently do biomedical research towards cancer diagnostics and drug therapy. I am also a student-athlete as I am a member of Smith's Swim and Dive team. I love learning and am excited to share that with students of all ages!
I have a B.A. in biology from Smith College and an M.A. in Science Education from the University of Central Florida. I am also currently working on my doctoral degree in educational psychology. I am passionate about biological sciences and I love to find ways to make complex concepts accessible and easy to understand. My teaching focuses on the application of concepts to solve problems and interpret data. I am especially skilled in tapping into students' prior knowledge to bridge what they already know about a topic with what they need to learn. I have been teaching biological sciences for over 25 years, including such varied subjects as general biology, zoology, anatomy and physiology, marine science, and AP Biology.
I'm a teacher living in New Haven, Connecticut. I grew up in CT before going to Smith College where I studied European history and education. I spent my junior year abroad in Paris, France and fell in love with the city and its history so much that I moved there after college to get my master's degree from the Sorbonne in early modern French history. While I was there, I tutored students of all ages in English and I taught English conversation to French high school students. Then I joined Teach for America and moved back to the states, where I've taught ancient history to 5th graders for the last two years. I'm fluent in French and scored a C2 (highest level) on the Test de Connaissance du franais. I love tutoring test prep, history and French. In my free time, I like to hike, cook and ski.
Hello! I am a long time lover of Latin and a fanatic for French. I really enjoy helping students learn and improve their language skills with some neat tricks to help memorize and practice that really puts language in context. Here's to exploring and succeeding! Carpe diem! On y va!
I am a teacher, certified to teach high school social studies. I have a Bachelor's degree in Biology from Smith College, an MPhil (a doctorate without a dissertation) in History from George Washington University and an MAT from Simmons College. I have taught and tutored at both the collegiate and high school levels, in History, Biology, Calculus and Spanish. I am happy to help with any subjects in which you or your child may need or want assistance. I am most comfortable with History, particularly World History (ancient through modern) and US History (I admit that political history between 1820 and 1850 is not my favorite subject, but I know it!). I speak four languages beyond English, in varying degrees (French, German, Arabic, Hebrew). My graduate training in History focused on Middle Eastern History and Cold War History (especially the nuclear arms race); in college, I minored in History, primarily the History of Europe between the Dark Ages and the Renaissance. I believe that a high school teacher's job (and a tutor's) is not just to cover the curriculum. I also provide my students with the skills they will need to succeed in college and the workplace, including study skills, note-taking skills, research skills, writing skills, and critical thinking skills, especially about current events. I agree with Jefferson on the necessity of well-informed voters to a functioning democracy. I also believe that learning should be fun, whenever possible, while admitting that, particularly in high school, students must often "get through" subjects they do not find fun. I feel I should acknowledge that I consider that once my student, always my student. This means that I answer panicked emails from students who have forgotten how to do footnotes once they get to college, among other things. Outside of the classroom, I enjoy reading, watching rugby (I used to play), swimming, dancing (all kinds), photography, reading, manga/anime and needlecrafts. Model United Nations is my all-time favorite club. In addition, I love spending time with my nephew and nieces (preschool to early elementary age). I love to laugh and I am often unintentionally funny; fortunately, I don't mind laughing at myself on occasion.
Hi, my name is Kandice Jones and I'm a recent graduate of Smith College (Class of 2019). I received my Bachelor of Arts in both Government and Economics with concentrations in African Studies and Development. Since graduation, I've traveled extensively and even worked abroad as an ESL teacher in Morocco. By working at a language center, I experienced and became comfortable teaching various ages and levels. Aside from teaching, I also hosted regularly attended book clubs and entrepreneurship programs for youth. Despite only having formal experience tutoring English and other related subjects, I still have a passion for Mathematics. Growing up, I hated math because I thought I could never learn the subject. It wasn't until college, where I reconsidered the possibility. Through many tutoring sessions and long nights of practice, the subject became less of a chore and more of a hobby. Looking back, I wish that I had someone to assist and push me past my limits, someone who had the patience to explain steps thoroughly and guide me through answering my questions. Although I didn't have such a person when I was younger, I would love to be that for others. It's important for me to show all my students that anything is possible with the right amount of dedication, patience, and support.
I am a senior at Smith College, where I study mathematics. My past mathematical research has included work with Markov chains, random walks, and combinatorial optimization.I tutored briefly in my freshman year of college, in addition to being a homework grader for calculus classes. For the past two summers, I have worked at Epsilon Camp, which is a summer camp for students who are profoundly gifted in mathematics. My experience there inspired me to start tutoring again.I believe that all students learn a little differently, and though schools try their best they can't account for every learning style. My goal is to adapt my instruction to each student's preferences in order to help them as much as I can.In my free time, I like to play ice hockey (or just skate), knit, do yoga, and read, especially epic fantasy (I may or may not have all the Lord of the Rings books memorized). I also enjoy experimenting and developing gluten free cookie recipes.
I taught French language and culture for over 15 years in both private and public schools: elementary, middle, high school, and Community college. I have lived extensively in Europe and Asia and have had the opportunity to visit many countries throughout the world. I had many wonderful experiences tutoring English as a second language in varying cultural contexts. I graduated from Smith College with a degree in French and studied at L'Universite de Paris, Sorbonne et Clignancourt through the Smith junior year abroad program. I also hold a Masters degree in Education with a concentration in Curriculum & Instruction. I am a lifelong learner believing that it is critical to impart an ongoing passion for learning to my students. I have had great success in my teaching and tutoring in many subjects because I combine the essential mastery of foundation skills with a creative approach. My other interests include Asian Brushwork painting, guitar, singing, tennis, golf, and walking.
I love to teach because I believe that education is the greatest tool for empowering others and oneself. Working with students of diverse backgrounds, interests, ages, abilities and experiences has taught me that helping someone find their strengths and overcome academic challenges is the most impactful and rewarding undertaking and is something I hope to continue for the rest of my life. Through patience and understanding, I seek to support my students in whatever ways best accommodate their learning needs. I enjoy being creative in my approaches to teaching, using games, songs and interaction between the students (when in a group) to make learning engaging and relatable. I am personable and open with my students because I believe that forging an honest and mutually respectful relationship is fundamental for us to be successful in learning together. I hope to bring my experience, dedication and eagerness to work with a variety of students to Varsity Tutors.
I'm a current student at Smith College working towards my degree in Education & Child Studies and Theatre. I've been tutoring for many years and I have experience working with children of all ages and ability levels--from profoundly gifted students to students struggling with learning disabilities. I believe every student has the potential to succeed, it is just a question of finding the right entryway into the material. Since teachers don't always have the time to work individually with every student, that's where a tutor comes in!I'm a strong advocate for Carol Dweck's growth mindset theory of education, encouraging students to learn and grow from their mistakes rather than becoming discouraged and giving up. When I was in high school, I struggled a lot with math, and this caused me to view myself as a failure. Working with my own tutors and teachers helped me realize that I am capable of overcoming difficulties through perseverance, and that's a skill that I want to pass on to the students I tutor. Everyone makes mistakes and has struggles, but the important thing is that you can move past those roadblocks. As a tutor, I try really hard to help students connect the material they are studying inside the classroom to their passions outside the classroom. Sometimes all that's needed to make the material "click" is seeing how it is relevant to their own lives. My personal interests include theatre (especially Shakespeare), reading and writing, arts and crafts, baking, and outdoor activities with my dog. My favorite subjects to tutor are English, writing, and SAT prep, and my favorite part of being a tutor is seeing the "Aha!" moment when a student finally understands something that didn't make sense to them before.
I am a junior at Smith College in Northampton, MA. I am a pre-med psychology and chemistry double-major.I have been a tutor for around seven years and have experience tutoring a variety of academic subjects such as calculus, creative writing, and organic chemistry for older students and test prep and elementary subjects for younger students.I also have a lot of experience working with kids with a variety of disabilities. Some of the kids I've worked with are non-verbal and non-mobile, others simply require a detailed schedule to keep them focused. Regardless of what the kid needs, I'm prepared to work with the family to make sure they achieve their goals. Finally, I attended a Jewish day school for most of my life, where in addition to regular courses, I studied Hebrew and Judaic studies. I can also speak Spanish and some Turkish and ASL.
I have always been a curious person who has enjoyed school and I hope to inspire the same in my students. I know the importance of tailoring my teaching style to each individual student, and seek to understand how they learn so that I may be able to teach them more effectively. I work to give students the tools they need to be successful learners so that one day they will no longer need my assistance.
I am currently a senior at Smith College majoring in Sociology and concentrating in Women's Education. I have been tutoring for years, and due to my passion for reading, I concentrate mostly in English, Literature, Writing, Essay editing, and the reading and writing sections of the SAT. I love being able to help students discover a love of reading and writing like I have, and being able to apply it to their schoolwork and any other ways they need to succeed. For learning to be most successful, I believe in a collaborative, student-centered approach to tutoring, that is, to always keep in mind both what the student wants to learn and what they need to learn. It is important to make lesson plans as engaging and relevant to the student's life as possible, because this is the way to guarantee an interest in and love of learning. Although I know that my students have a lot to gain from me, I view tutoring as a two-way process in which both parties stand to learn from each other.
I hold a Bachelor's degree in English from Binghamton University, a Master's degree in Education from Nazareth University, and a Master's degree in Exercise and Sport Studies from Smith College. With this strong educational background, I am excited to help students excel in all areas of English and writing. I am especially passionate about guiding students through the writing process, whether it's for college applications, midterms, or course essays. I understand that writing can be daunting, and I am here to provide the support, structure, and encouragement needed to help you succeed. I tailor each lesson to meet your individual needs and learning style, ensuring that you gain the skills and confidence to tackle any writing challenge. I believe in fostering a supportive and positive learning environment where students feel comfortable sharing their thoughts and ideas. By getting to know my students on a personal level, I can provide the most effective and personalized help, so you always feel heard and understood. Outside of my academic work, I enjoy traveling, playing basketball, and spending quality time with my 9-month-old son. I believe in balancing life's passions with a commitment to education, and I bring that same energy and enthusiasm into my teaching. If you're looking for a dedicated tutor who will work with you every step of the way and help you reach your academic goals, I would love to work together.
Do you need to rise above other college candidates? I can help. I have a Ph.D. in English and taught writing in a major US university. I have extensive experience in creating personal statements for Ivy League universities and Oxford. If you need an objective, experienced, and reliable reader who can make outstanding suggestions for ways to stand out, you have found that person. My Varsity clients report high satisfaction with their Common Application essays, and they have been accepted to the schools of their choice. Many initially thought they lacked the ability to make a distinctive case for themselves, but they found they had plenty to write about when they worked with me. Some clients come to me struggling with graduate school applications and master's degree projects. We succeed in tackling those. Some people consult me for personal statements for employment, and they are now working at those jobs! I graduated from prestigious Smith College, one of the famous 'Seven Sisters' colleges for women on the east coast. Smith College is ranked #12 out of 233 national liberal arts colleges by the US News and World Best Colleges 2018. While at Smith I competed for high grades, and wrote and cartooned for the college newspaper. I worked in banking and insurance for a taste of the business world before returning to the University of Massachusetts in Amherst for my master's and doctoral degrees. After defending my dissertation, I went to work for the highly-rated University of Washington in Seattle, which is tied with Yale for position #10 in the ranking of 1,250 global universities in 2018. I started in the Department of Human Centered Design and Engineering teaching technical writing and then moved to Department of Biomedical Regulatory Affairs in the School of Pharmacy. There, I created curricula and taught master's-level students to write government and business to business communication. What I care about most is helping students find the confidence to build their writing skills. Writing is critical to everything, and I think everyone can improve and reach their goals. I also think that talented students are often frustrated by large classes and the unfair pace of education, and that's why I work for Varsity. Let's look at your goals together, today. You will have something written by tomorrow, guaranteed.
I am currently pursuing a Bachelor's degree in Biological Sciences at Smith College, and plan to graduate next spring. My expertise spans subjects including Anatomy, Physiology, Botany, Biology, Biochemistry, Chemistry, Genetics, Evolution, and Neuroscience. I believe in fostering a student-centered learning environment where my students feel comfortable voicing their questions and challenges. Having been tutored myself, I understand the importance of empathy in education, and I strive to create a supportive atmosphere that encourages intellectual curiosity. Outside of tutoring, I enjoy reading and writing science fiction, doing gymnastics and cheerleading, and practicing Spanish, having earned a New York State seal of biliteracy in the language. I am excited to share my enthusiasm for life sciences and help students achieve their academic goals. I like: Reading, Writing, Gymnastics, Cheerleading, Yoga, Podcasting, and Playing Cello.

I am an educator with 20 years of experience. I am currently seeking a Masters of Social Work at Smith College in order to compliment my existing teaching experience. I have worked with math, science, humanities, and English. My preparation to go to graduate school enabled me to become very familiar with test prep strategies and I am also a competent guide for preparing to take both college admissions and graduate admissions exams.I enjoy working with people from a wide variety of educational backgrounds and ages. From the young people who are learning to make education a lifelong part of their development to adults returning school, I feel confident helping people at different stages achieve their academic goals. I am a rising senior at Smith College pursuing a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology and Africana Studies. As a tutor I specialize in elementary, middle, and high school reading and writing, although I am passionate about all aspects and levels of English language literacy. Previously, I have tutored students ages 4-6 in elementary school reading skills, and high school students in foreign language proficiency. Previous professional positions include: Assistant to the Childrens Librarians at the Somers Public Library, Caregiver Center Volunteer at the Maria Fareri Childrens Hospital, and Family Programs Intern at the New-York Historical Societys DiMenna Childrens History Museum. Regardless of the student or the subject, my paramount goal is to ensure that learning will continue outside of the tutoring session by discovering the students individual passions and interests, which will transform education from a task to an enthusiastic lifelong pursuit. In my free time, I enjoy science fiction and fantasy novels, NPR podcasts, and long walks with family and friends.

I graduated Summa Cum Laude from Smith College with a degree in Chemistry and minor in Biology. I am extremely passionate about both science and education and have been tutoring for over five years. I have a strong passion and love for both of these subjects and I am so excited to help others explore them! Education in STEM is extremely important to me. I've always loved helping others, but I especially love helping people to appreciate the beauty of the universe we live in through math, physics and astronomy!Aside from science I also love history, reading, going on walks, drawing, listening to music, and watching films. I enjoy taking drives to the beach and stargazing as well! I also love to spend time with my dog and two cats.I am looking forward to working with you, and as Albert Einstein said: "Most of the fundamental ideas of science are essentially simple, and may, as a rule, be expressed in a language comprehensible to everyone."
Hello: I'm a lifelong learner and educator. I have taught in public and private schools from Pre-K through MBA, with 40 years of experience at the master's level, but I'm very young-at-heart. Hello! I graduated from Smith College with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Physics. I am spending the next year pursuing my passion for teaching, before becoming a PhD candidate in the field of Applied Sciences and Technology at the University of California at Berkeley. I have been a tutor for the last few years. I have worked primarily with undergraduate physics and engineering students, both individually and in large groups. I am a great tutor because I am extremely patient. I believe that the best way to teach is to first listen carefully to how a student is approaching a problem. Rather than jumping in with my own favorite tricks, I help students understand which of their instincts are bringing them in the right direction, and then build on their previous knowledge and skills.
If you are seeking a tutor who will embrace your creativity, personality, and learning strengths with humor, honesty, and warmth, I might be a great fit for you. Please let me know if you have any questions about my approach, and I hope to work with you very soon.Since 2002, I have worked as an educator in urban, multicultural, and clinical settings from Brooklyn, New York to Portland, Oregon. I am currently pursuing my undergraduate degree in mathematics at Smith College and, from here, hope to one day be an educator as I am very passionate about helping others succeed. There is nothing more invigorating to me than helping someone see things more clearly and be relieved of their academic stress; I get a rush every single time I manage to help a student. I have been tutoring since high school and have most of my experience with math, but have also helped with English and French. My most recent job was at a summer camp, so even outside of my tutoring I have lots of experience working with kids in and out of the classroom.
Learning and intellectual growth in students has its fundamentals, as does soccer. Students build from basic comfort to a feeling of being invited, then to a knowledge that they are inspired, as well as an increasing confidence in their own voice as it is elicited in various ways. Subtly they sense the growing realization that they are part of a larger whole???of the human story, of life.I believe in a balance of progressive and traditional teaching. Tutoring one-on-one is the best of teaching. I like to present any given material in two ways, such as aurally and visually, so that various learners can access the depth of the content. An example might be to have them select quotations from Civil Disobedience, put them in their own words, write whether they agree with them or not and create a visual of a selected passage from Walden. Or in addition to an aural discussion of a Scene in Hamlet I will write a web on the board to map both concepts and characters.I believe in growth through learning. I believe it is life in a full sense.
I graduated in May 2013 from Smith College with a BA in English and Spanish. In June 2013, I acquired my Teaching English as a Foreign Language certification and taught ESL to elementary, middle and high school students of varying levels in Shanghai, China from August 2013 to June 2014.The subjects of my lessons ranged from basic grammar, vocabulary and conversational skills to debate, the art of oral presentation, Americanculture and theatrical expression in English. While in Shanghai I also worked as an independent ESL tutor. From March 2012 to May 2012 I volunteered to teach English as a Second Language to Spanish-speaking immigrants with a local NGO in Cordoba, Spain. I am fluent in Spanish, have an intermediate knowledge of Mandarin Chinese and have studied Portuguese, Romanian, French, Arabic and Korean. Teaching in foreign countries has helped me to understand the value of developing a rapport with students (even across cultural and linguistic barriers) and has honed my ability to involve my students in the learning process in ways that engage their own creativity, powers of imagination and personal interests. In my spare time, I love to read, write poetry, roller skate, ride horses, sing karaoke and travel. I also used to play on a roller derby team in Shanghai, China and hope to join a recreational team in Austin!
Sara is the Director of Counseling at the Buxton School, a college-prep boarding school in Massachusetts with a 3:1 student-to-faculty ratio and a 100% college placement rate. In that role, she uses her training as a Master of Social Work to help students set goals, navigate big decisions, and plan for the transition to college. Sara previously worked in college admissions, and draws on this experience to guide students and families. Sara is a firm believer that -- while undeniably challenging -- the college planning and admissions process can be a deeply meaningful and rewarding journey, and that with the right care and support each student can approach this transition with clarity, confidence, and a stronger sense of self.

I received my B.A. in Philosophy and Neuroscience from Smith College, where I focused primarily on Buddhist philosophy. In college, I honed my abilities to communicate effectively, make cogent arguments, and work collaboratively to synthesize new ideas. I also nurtured a love of art, music, poetry, and dance during my undergraduate years, which gave me a deeply interdisciplinary perspective of knowledge and expression. Undergirding all of my passions is a lifelong love of learning and self-expression. I hope to inspire a similar sentiment in my students. Having attained 5's on English language and literature AP exams (as well as high marks on IB English language exams), I am well-equipped to help students achieve success on standardized tests and with essay writing. If you want to learn how to make strong arguments, write clearly and beautifully, and gain facility in using language to express subtle ideas and emotions, I am the tutor for you.
I am a senior at Smith College majoring in Biology with a minor in African Studies. I’ve been tutoring students since I was in high school in biology, math, chemistry, study skills and organization. I was the Student Academic Adviser for my dorm my sophomore year, and I was a lab teaching assistant for an introductory Biology course. My strongest background is in biology, French, and building study skills. I’ve studied French for 7 years, including work as an Au Pair in France and Studying abroad in Madagascar. Because of my biology major, I also have a strong understanding of chemistry and math and a solid grasp on essay writing. Strong writing skills are essential, no matter what you study. My African studies minor as well as a love for history in high school has given me a firm grasp of both US history and European history. Of all these subjects, biology is my favorite to teach. I’m passionate about all the weird and wonderful things in Biology, especially microbiology, and I love to share this interest with others. I know math and science can be hard for people to grasp and I’ve come up with many tools to conceptualize the subject matter and piece it together. Biology is like a storybook of the world; you just need to learn its language. As a tutor I am creative, organized, and energetic. I recognize that every person studies differently and I always look for the best solution for each student. I personally am a visual learner, and I have many tools for conceptualizing a subject in different ways. I'm always open to new forms of teaching, and aspire to make the subject fun and engaging. In my free time I enjoy getting out in Nature, baking, photography, ballet/dance, and traveling whenever possible.
I'm passionate about sharing knowledge with others and working with students on concrete ways to improve how they study and retain information. My background is in the arts and I am a supporter of theatre, fine arts, and art history. I'd be happy to work with you!
I'm a recent Smith College graduate with a BA in Art History. I specialize in humanities classes like English, writing, and literature. I can also help with SAT verbal/writing preparedness.

Smith's approach emphasizes critical thinking, analytical skills, and interdisciplinary connections—values that shape how its alumni tutor. These tutors typically excel at helping students see how concepts connect across subjects and at asking thoughtful questions that deepen understanding rather than just providing answers.
