I moved to Virginia about a year and a half ago after being a Californian for most of my adult life. I received a Bachelor's Degree and teaching credential in English from San Diego State University and went on to teach 7th and 8th grade language arts in a diverse public school. I then moved north to beautiful Sonoma County where I completed a Master's degree in English literature. During my time as a graduate student, I began teaching freshman composition classes and worked with small groups of beginning writers, many of whom were the first in their family to attend college. I stayed on as an adjunct instructor teaching courses that focused on expository writing, analytical reading, research, and oral communication skills. Over the course of my 15 year career, I have worked with students from a variety of backgrounds and skill levels, including many students with unique language or learning needs. I have served as an adviser and scorer/rater for numerous written assessment tests (including district and state assessments from elementary through high school, and college entrance and exit exams), and am very familiar with the type of analytical and persuasive writing prompts that students are asked to tackle for such assessments. Despite my extensive experience with argumentation and expository texts, my first love continues to be fiction and poetry, and I would jump enthusiastically at the chance to work with students in the world of literature and creative writing. I believe that students learn best when they are invested, active participants in the learning process, and my job is to listen and guide rather than lecture. I come to our tutoring sessions with a virtual "sackful" of strategies to help you work through challenging material, and by listening, observing and motivating, I can help you access the tools that will be most compatible with your learning style.

Since graduating with my PhD in Nuclear Physics from the University of California, Davis in 2009, I have spent 7 years as a community college physics professor. As a community college graduate myself, I understand the challenges facing students and I am a passionate teacher. I am currently taking a year in Cambridge to complete a Master's degree in the Harvard Graduate School of Education to further improve my skills. As a tutor, physics is my favorite topic, but I am also enthusiastic about math as well as GRE test prep. From my experience in the classroom, I have discovered that it's very important to tailor the learning experience to each student. Every student is different and will benefit from varied methods. In general it's important to minimize lecturing and to give a student the opportunity to try and succeed at problems with gentle guidance. Outside of teaching, my interests are diverse. I enjoy reading, movies, CrossFit, theater, and dancing, specifically Salsa and Swing.

I have been teaching for over 10 years and have loved every minute of it. I knew I wanted to be a teacher in the 5th grade. I enjoying helping students believe in their abilities and strengthening what they are weak in. Working through these weaknesses and getting them to believe in themselves and what they are capable of opens so many doors to them and makes anything they put their mind to possible in the future. I went to Sonoma State University for my BA in History and went on to Sacramento State for my credential and some graduate courses. I have since worked at an independent study charter school for the past 7.5 years and am now substituting for some of the local districts.I look forward to making a difference in more student's lives and helping the achieve the education they deserve!

I grew up in Sonoma County, CA, and after running around and having a few adventures after high school, I returned to the area and settled into college life at Sonoma State University. I graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology, minoring in Environmental Studies with a focus on environment-based education. I then moved up to Portland and attended the Graduate Teacher Education Program at Portland State University. I received my Master's degree in Education in 2009, and have been working with students in an educational setting ever since (taking time out here and there to have a few children of my own!). I did my student teaching in 3rd and 5th grades, and have done some substitute teaching in grades K-8. I worked as a paraprofessional in a significant needs program at an elementary school, and have taught 7th and 8th grades at an online school.I value education, and believe in teaching students how to seek out the answers, rather than just providing the answers for them. Every person is capable of learning, and one of my favorite things as a teacher is seeing the light in a student's eyes when they have figured something out; and seeing their confidence grow when they realize they can do it!

I attended college in California. When I started I definitely thought I would be an engineer. After 3 years, I decided that I was not really interested in pure engineering - it was too dry, boring, and impersonal for me. I finished with an entirely different degree - a Bachelors in Psychology. After I graduated, I found the ideal job - helping engineers design things that people can use safely and easily. The job is called Human Factors Engineering. Later I went back to school and finished my engineering with a Masters in Industrial and Systems Engineering. While I think working as a pure engineer would be boring - I do appreciate the logic and precision of science and mathematics. These are tools that allow us to predict and control the future! Phones, computers, cars, bridges, buildings, and the space station were all created with science and mathematics. Not only are these powerful tools, but learning math and science can help you become better thinkers. The logical process used to solve science and math problems can be used to solve all sorts of problems - from how to build a fence to how to make an important decision!I like to teach by using examples - it can help the student get another perspective on the concept, one that they are more familiar with. I also like to use drawings and graphic aids. And as a lesson concludes, I want to be certain they fully understand the topic. To make certain students understand a concept, I ask them to explain it to back to me - not using my words, but their own.For my own enjoyment, I like travel and exploration. A few years ago I had a chance to live in Europe for over 6 months. I also like construction - I once built my house, including plumbing and electrical work. And, although my license is not active now, I enjoy flying. I flew my own small Cessna from the west coast to nearly the east coast.

Even as a boy, there were three things I enjoyed above others: learning about the world, traveling with my family and working with other people to solve a problem or complete a project. Naturally, I also loved to play but even that often fit into these three areas.I'm not a youngster anymore, in fact I retired two years ago, but those loves have always been with me and have influenced me greatly. I have spent most of my professional life in schools where I could learn and help others learn as well and where I could work with hundreds of students over the years, each with unique personalities, strengths, interests and needs. I taught math, science and technology in middle and high schools and eventually became a high school principal and school director. But I was always a teacher first and always motivated by the individual students in my classes and schools. And what about my love of travel? After teaching for 3 years in Kansas, my wife and I became teachers in international schools, working in some of the best schools in the world with the children of diplomats and business professionals posted abroad. For nearly 30 years and in seven countries, we supported the learning of students, many of whom were American but many others who came from at least 50 other countries and whose home languages were diverse but who were learning in an American-curriculum, English language based school much like the best independent schools here in the U.S.So now I am happily retired here in Lawrence, enjoying being close to family but missing that special satisfaction of sharing in the learning and growth of my students. I have a wealth of strategies and tools to bring to the learning process that I hope can help me to help any learner.

Currently, I am attending SF State University and am attaining my M.Sc. degree in Biochemistry. In addition, I enjoy teaching both biology and chemistry during my spare time-- this is my passion. I teach these subjects to all ages and strive to improve scientific literacy in my own way, that is, being an effective tutor. Moreover, my method of tutoring is particularly effective, because I get to know what type of learner the student is (e.g. visual learner, hands-on learner, etc.) and present the material in this way. This method prepares the student with a basic foundation of knowledge to continue to study independently, that is, without the help of me. Thus, as your potential tutor I will come to know the weaknesseses in your knowledge and improve them in a way best suited to you.
