Hello there! My name is Sofia and I am currently a special education teacher in Brooklyn, New York. I have experience teaching in grades second through fifth grade, both in inclusion and self-contained classroom settings.

I am a graduate of SUNY Plattsburgh and I received my Bachelor of Arts in Communication Science and Disorders with a focus on Spanish. For graduate school, I went to CUNY City College and I received my Masters of Arts in Generalist Special Education 7-12. Since graduation, I have traveled extensively, currently, work for the Department of Education in NYC, and became a teacher leader at my current school. While I tutor a broad range of subjects, I am most passionate about English, Literature, and History. In my experience helping struggling students prepare for Standardized Tests, we always seem to have the most fun (with remarkable advancements) prepping for the Critical Reading and Writing portions of the exams. I have been teaching for 9 years in a NYC title 1 public school and I currently teach 10th and 12th grade English in an integrated co-teaching setting and a self-contained setting as well. I am well versed in differenation and implementing strategies to help students, specifically special education students. I am a firm proponent of education, believing it to be absolutely necessary for an improved quality of life, and I try to impart this appreciation to all of my students. In my spare time, I enjoy traveling, reading, spending time with friends, and binging Netflix shows.
I recently retired from teaching, having taught for 26 years in elementary school. I taught Pre-K through sixth grade, spending most of my time in third grade. I will always be grateful for my time in the classroom; I have had hundreds of students who enriched my life and helped me grow as much as I hope I helped them likewise.
I was born and raised in NYC but recently moved to Georgia. I am currently a Social worker licensed as a LMSW. I have a master's degree in social work from Stony Brook University and a bachelor's degree in Psychology from Plattsburgh State. I have worked in the Human Services/Behavioral Sciences field for 5 plus years. My current career background is in providing psychotherapy and working with teens/adults with severe and persistent mental illness. I love the work that I do because I believe that there is a need for authenticity, connection, understanding and support amongst mankind. Tutoring to me is a connection between student and teach. It is a bond created on a simple goal "achieving improvement and conquering struggles." I am passionate about tutoring for the social work licensing exam as I know hands what it feels like to experience the stressors of taking this test. I am a graduate student at SUNY Plattsburgh in the BS/MSEd Special/Early Childhood Education program with a concentration in mathematics. I have completed all of my undergraduate and graduate courses for my degree, and I am student teaching in NYC for the Spring 2014 semester. I am an experienced physical therapist with 20 years experience, haven worked in inpatient, hospital, industrial rehabilitation, outpatient and private practice settings. I treated a multitude of different movement dysfunctions, including spinal injuries, traumatic, peripheral and sports injuries, motor vehicle accidents, and post surgical conditions. I have also 20 years experience as a personal trainer, 15 years of teaching experience and am a newly trained certified professional coach(CPC).My educational journey began with a career in marketing where I thought I was going to own my own Advertising Agency. I graduated in 1992 with a BS in Marketing. After a low back injury, and several months of physical therapy, I became enthralled with physical therapy and decided to make a career change. Studying hard, taking all the necessary science courses, I was accepted into Nova South Eastern University Master of Physical Therapy Program. I did a 4 month clinical rotation through inpatient, outpatient, pediatrics and neurlogic settings and graduated in 1999 with my MPT. Then in 2011, I decided to pursue an advanced master's from the University of South Australia, where I studied with experts Mark Jones, PT, David Butler, PT, Lorimer Moseley, PT and others and graduated in 2012.
