My name is Sharon Houssou. I hold a secondary teaching certificate in English for grades 7-12, as well as a Master's Degree in Writing. I work with students to develop clear, effective, and confident academic writing. I will help you strengthen the core elements of strong writing: developing precise thesis statements, organizing ideas logically, and supporting claims with clever, relevant evidence. I will help you create a clear outline, draft with purpose, and revise strategically. I will work closely with you on analytical thinking. Whether you are writing a literary analysis, argumentative essay, or research paper, I will guide you in developing deeper, more precise interpretations, and in using evidence effectively to support your ideas. My goal is to help you recognize patterns in your writing, revise with intention, and build skills that you can apply independently across your academic work.

Let's cut to the chase. You are struggling with some concept, and you are missing the fundamental knowledge to understand it. Fortunately, I am a very patient tutor who is willing to go as far back to the prehistoric age of fundamentals in order for you to succeed. Not only that, we will build an intuitive, conceptual understanding along the way so that you can logically derive the knowledge instead of through memorization. If you want a solid comprehension supported by non-wavering logical and intuitive reasoning, I would be more than eager to help.

I'm a writer and MFA graduate living in Rapid City, SD. I believe that in a teacher-student relationship, no one is superior. I am learning right there along with my student and discovering the subject through his or her eyes. My personal philosophy is that the moment you stop learning, you stop living. Teaching is learning.
Recently, I completed my Masters in Online Teaching from Wilkes University, learning ways to use technology to support diverse learners. My years of classroom experience taught me to respect all learners, finding ways to help people understand their goals and those of educational institutions. I love guiding people to become better communicators through writing and speaking. Literature and poetry are two areas that are fun to explore with me - I focus on the messages we can take from those pieces as well as the formal construction of the art. I believe writing can be transformative for the writer, so I enjoy tutoring the writing process from beginning to end. In my spare time, I travel anywhere, but often walk through Philly, Washington DC, and any downtown to people-watch, browse stores and sample restaurants. I am also a fan of basketball, soccer, and football.
Everyone has the potential to learn and become the BEST version of themselves. I truly enjoy teaching and have 18 years experience as a middle school English/social studies instructor. Recently, I received my adminstration credentials in the state of Virginia, and I am excited to be of assistance in strengthening your educational journey!
