I am a perpetually curious student at Harvard College studying Economics and Neurobiology. Since junior high, I have been a tutor, and I am comfortable whether the subject is English, calculus, or biology. I believe knowledge is most useful when you're able to integrate it into your everyday life. To that end, I would seek to learn from you and listen to your interests, and then find ways to show the hidden connections between the subject under study and your everyday life.

A first-generation college graduate of Harvard College, Alicia found life in literature, tetherball, and the unconditional love of a single mother. She was also nourished by the commitment of several teachers and mentors. Inspired by these social justice educators, Alicia is invested in institutional equity, centering historically marginalized narratives in the classroom, and cultivating young readers in Denver during her residency year as a concurrent masters student at the Harvard Graduate School of Education. She joins her older brother Andy in the teaching profession.
I am a graduate of Harvard College with a concentration in History of Art and Architecture. I love math and design, and I believe an understanding of both can help us appreciate our surroundings. My favorite subjects to tutor are algebra and geometry because it is so easy to make use of them in everyday life. When I tutor, I like to have my student identify what is confusing, work through the problem with my student, and then have them attempt a similar problem completely on their own. In my spare time, I enjoy soccer, baking, and hiking.
I am a rising sophomore at Harvard College and am about to declare as a Mechanical Engineering concentrator, working towards a Bachelor of Science degree. I've always enjoyed sharing my knowledge with my peers and those around me and have done so in both formal and informal settings. I've been a tutor for both Math and Spanish programs in high school and enjoyed the strides I made with students. I am willing to tutor any subject I have a background in, but am strong in mathematics, the sciences, Spanish, history, writing, and ACT prep. I enjoy teaching mathematics most due to the joy I can see in children once they master a topic and can answer even pointed questions meant to stump them, and maybe even put their knowledge to real world use. As a tutor, I like to give a strong foundation to orient my student, and then gradually grant them more freedom and independence until they can feel themselves grasp the concept, pointing out pitfalls or common errors along the way; teachers who used these methods on me always left the most lasting impressions. Outside of my studies, I really enjoy listening to music, both old favorites and new interests, reading classics, and gaming/playing basketball with my friends.
I received a Bachelor's degree in English with a secondary field (minor) in French at Harvard College. For my honors creative thesis in poetry, I wrote 52 original poems, centered on themes of transit, transience, nature, and urban life (particularly how these categories intersect). I also created and taught humanities courses to high school and middle school students through the Educational Studies Program at Harvard. Through this group, I co-founded ESProut, a program focused on bringing free after-school classes to under-resourced schools in the greater Somerville area, through which I taught French and poetry. Following graduation, I spent the school-year working as an English language teaching assistant at a high school in Bordeaux, France where I created lessons focusing on grammar, vocabulary, idiomatic speech, and culture. This past year, I received my master's in English at the University of Cambridge, writing a dissertation on trans-Atlantic/trans-cultural poetry with a focus on Walt Whitman, T.S. Eliot, and Jules Laforgue. Many summers have found me working as a residential assistant for Johns Hopkins University Center for Talented Youth, where I often would run the ever popular Seuss & Silverstein appreciation session. My ultimate goal is to become a high school English teacher and I am interested in becoming involved in educational policy at the national level later on in my life. Teaching is a joy that has always rivaled the happiness I receive from reading a great poem or communicating in another language. English and French literature are the two great passions of my life, and it is when I'm teaching that I feel most like I am doing meaningful and rewarding work. When I'm not reading poetry or practicing my French, I like boogie-boarding (a recently acquired skill), hiking, baking (often French desserts), and knitting.
With experience working with young elementary students, high school students, college applicants, and college students, I bring an eagerness to adapt my guidance to each individual. As a tutor, I am excited to tailor each and every session to a particular student's needs and preferred method of learning.
Hello! I'm eager to help you in your education. I'm a recent graduate of Harvard College looking to apply to law school. My senior thesis was written on John Dewey's ideas of education, which I deeply believe has incredible power to transform individuals and society.
With over two years experience tutoring in creative writing, reading, history, and test prep, I am focused on improving fundamental study skills through a practical, hands-on approach. This includes imbedding real-world applications into every lesson to inspire students and spark their latent curiosity. I received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Harvard in 2018 and currently live in Los Angeles, CA.
I am a graduate of Harvard University, Fordham University, and the Mindful Schools' Yearlong Certification Program in Mindfulness* Education. During my undergraduate years at Harvard, I studied Sociology and African Studies and spent a semester studying and discovering another culture in Accra, Ghana, in West Africa. After working in Ghana for a year after graduation, I returned to the United States, received my Master's from Fordham through the New York City Teaching Fellows program, and spent the last six years teaching a wide range of subjects, including mindfulness, in Brooklyn public middle and high schools. I have also worked as a teacher trainer and coach. Right now, I am applying to doctoral programs, teaching mindfulness to people of all ages (both one-on-one and in groups), and tutoring. My passion lies in helping students achieve their potential by providing high-quality, tailored instruction coupled with skillful, compassionate attention to the variety of factors that affect each student's ability to succeed, such as environmental stressors and self-limiting beliefs. I enjoy tutoring students in anything Englishrelated, especially college and grad school personal statement writing and academic writing in general, as well as middle school math, pre-algebra, and algebra. In my spare time, I love to dance, learn languages, attend yoga classes, read about anything and everything, drink tea, and hear people's life stories.*Mindfulness refers to paying nonjudgmental, compassionate attention to whatever arises in one's moment-to-moment experience, such as thoughts and feelings, training people to become more aware of what they are experiencing, replacing impulsive reactions with more thoughtful responses. Research has found that mindfulness training has a significant effect on students' and teachers' focus, stress management, impulse control, and relationships.
I am a student at Harvard College, studying government with a secondary focus in economics. I am currently teaching a class on civic engagement and government to fifth graders. In the past, I have also run simulations with high school students for academic conferences. While volunteering in Peru, I tutored students at an all-girls orphanage in a bilingual environment. Throughout high school, I also helped students prepare for standardized examinations such as the SAT, ACT, SAT subject tests, AP Exams and Regents examinations. I am eager to work with students in these areas, with a particular emphasis on reading, writing, and history. My experience working with children expands beyond tutoring. I also have worked with students on their college essays. I absolutely enjoy working with them and deeply care about promoting their education. In my free time, I keep up with the current events, read, run, sail, and watch Netflix.
I am a graduate of Harvard College, where I earned my BA, Cum Laude, in Economics and Government. I have also completed Columbia University's Certificate program in Business, and earned a Master's degree in Finance from Claremont McKenna. Currently I am working towards a JD at NYU's School of Law. Starting in college, I tutored students in economics and statistics, and also work with clients on subject test areas for the Advanced Placement exams, as well as standardized test preparation such as for the SAT I and II, GRE and LSAT. I especially enjoy helping students prepare for standardized tests because I remember how helpful a compelling guide and mentor can be during the often stressful process of testing and preparation for it. In addition to performing well on the exams themselves, I believe it is just as important for students to learn how to think calmly and confidently about these tests, so that they can help to serve students' broader educational goals. In addition to tutoring students - and being one myself - I enjoy keeping fit by boxing at the gym, reading mostly non-fiction, and rooting for favorite NCAA teams. I have had the opportunity to travel extensively abroad, and always enjoy learning about new cultures and peoples.
I graduated from Harvard College with a Bachelor of Arts in Romance Languages and Literature. I have experience tutoring high school and college students in Algebra, Latin, French, and Spanish. While I love all of the subjects that I tutor, I particularly enjoy tutoring Spanish and French because they open doors to communicating with and understanding so many people, both near and far! I have traveled to Peru and hope to travel more in the future. I strongly believe that anyone can learn anything, as long as enough time and effort are given. I will go to great lengths to convey an idea. I love music and I am interested in counseling and social justice.
My name is Erica and I am a recent graduate of Harvard College, graduating with a degree of High Honors in the History of Science. I am also anticipating entering dental school this coming Fall at Columbia College of Dental Medicine. In this interim year, I would love the opportunity to continue tutoring -- I have tutored all throughout college in a multitude of subjects, and this rewarding experience has not only helped the students, but has also allowed me the chance to myself better learn how to communicate with students of all ages and backgrounds. While I did graduate with a degree in history, I am also very comfortable tutoring Biology, Chemistry, and Physics, as I have taken all these courses at Harvard as pre-requsities for Dental School. I have also taken the SAT, DAT, MCAT, and GRE, and am more than willing to help tutor anyone preparing for these exams -- as someone who has taken them not too long ago, I myself remember the stress that comes with standardized testing, and would love the chance to help find with you the best way possible to guide your way through it.I am very excited to be a part of your team, and I hope to meet you soon!
I am a rising sophomore at Harvard, and have not yet declared a major but will likely study government. I graduated from Simsbury High School. I have significant experience tutoring students at the middle school and high school levels, and actually took time off before college and spent it tutoring. I primarily tutor students in PSAT/SAT preparation and math (through Algebra 2), although I can also tutor introductory economics, statistics, and high school political science. Additionally, I enjoy writing and am interested in helping students refine their writing skills and editing their essays if needed. My goal is to enhance students’ knowledge of key concepts while also making the learning process enjoyable. As a current college student and fairly recent high school graduate, I can relate well to what my tutoring students are going through, and I am aware of their teachers’ expectations. I encourage all of my students to ask plenty of questions whenever they are confused, as that is the best way to learn. In my free time, I love playing the piano. I am primarily a jazz musician, and perform regularly. Another hobby of mine is politics, and at school I am very involved with the Institute of Politics. Other than that, I am focused on my academic studies. I look forward to helping students advance their own academic careers through Varsity Tutors.
Good teaching begins with respect for the needs, interests, and learning styles of each student. However, it also depends on proper training and subject knowledge. In this respect, my teaching has been enriched by graduate study (M.A., M.Phil, Medieval European History), including intensive study of both history and languages, including German, Latin, French, and Spanish, which I speak fluently.Furthermore, my teaching has been shaped by many years of working as a high-school history/social studies teacher. I have taught Global History, and several electives like Political Philosophy, Modern Latin America, Strategic Thinking, and Religion. I have also taught test preparation and ESL.This background enables me to provide instructive, substantive lessons, understand and draw upon each student's needs and potentialities, and to unlock his or her academic potential. In addition to subject knowledge, effective self-expression (written and oral) and reasoned analysis of well-chosen evidence, I also encourage students to develop a genuine interest in the subject by showing them how historical study may touch on today's most pressing issues and on their own personal lives. The skills gained along the way--expository writing, public speaking, and critical thinking--will propel students to success not only in school, but in every field of endeavor.
I am a fourth year student at Harvard Medical School, and will start working as a pediatrician in July of 2016. However, if I had not decided to become a physician, I would have strongly considered becoming a teacher. Teaching is one of the most enjoyable activities I do, and I have taught in some capacity every year for the past ten years. I have taught subjects ranging from English to algebra, from physics to dance, and have taught students ranging in age from toddlers to adults. I have also provided advice on application essays, resumes, and interview strategies for Harvard College students applying to highly competitive scholarships. Each of these experiences has taught me how to communicate concepts in clear and engaging ways. For instance, while tutoring adolescents enrolled in the Boston-based Artists for Humanity program, I would often teach students whom I had never worked with before, and thus became adept at quickly discovering and implementing the strategies that worked best for a particular student (e.g., visual/tactile examples, analogies, and breaking down complex problems into smaller parts). While tutoring a janitorial staff member in preparation for the mathematics portion of her GED high school equivalency exam, I learned how to quickly identify the highest yield topics for a standardized exam and focus our efforts on those. Each of these experiences has been incredibly rewarding, and has inspired me to teach in some capacity throughout my career as a doctor.
