As an educator, I strive to make math available to every student. Each student has their own learning style and is capable of learning. My job is to connect the student to their learning, using techniques that suit their needs. We need to include a few laughs along the way, as this is Math after all!

I was a private math (and chess) tutor for about half a year, and I was a math clinic tutor at university for three terms. I have loved math since I was a kid, and I enjoy it when my help allows people to better understand and appreciate math as well. So many students seem to have an innate distaste for math; I want to help students overcome that distaste, and come away with a greater understanding of how the math they are doing works, and more importantly, why it works.

I am a graduate of Western Connecticut State University, currently working towards a Dental Doctorate degree at the Harvard School of Dental Medicine. I took a gap year before starting dental school. During this time, I became a 7th-grade teacher; this experience shaped my understanding of the current educational needs in private and public institutions. Many children needed one-to-one tutoring, which I could not provide as a teacher. I enjoy teaching in a classroom, but I found that my strengths lie in one-to-one interaction. It is easy for students to fall behind, especially with the increasing classroom size. A lot of learning happens outside of school, and without guidance, this learning is often not effective. My goal is to bridge this gap, so no child is left behind because I strive to help my students reach the necessary milestones to ensure they become the best learners they could be.

My goal for every session is that every student comes away with a better understanding of the material. I did my BS in Mathematics, and Finance and a minor in Economics. While those subjects may sound daunting, I know that any concept can be understood with right explanation.

I love chemistry. And I mean it! It is a passion of mine, and I really enjoy all of the concepts, math, and learning involved. I love to tutor math and science because they are something that really click with me and make the ground for new understandings of the world around us. Because of this, I really enjoy being able to give that knowledge and understanding to others. It is a great experience for everyone involved, and I enjoy seeing the "I finally got it" moment, so to speak. I have seen it in students of all ages, even adults in college, so I honestly believe it is there for everyone. To get that moment, I find it very important to understand that I, as well as other tutors, am not here to give the answers. We are here to further drive understanding so that you can find the answers yourself. I try to keep the session calm; there's no pressure to get it on the first, second, or even tenth try. I enjoy cooking and trying to make/eat new foods as well as drawing. I play a fair amount of video games in my free time and conversing with new people is always a treat. I have a background both in the business world, where I founded and operated my own retail businesses for many years, and the educational world, where I teach History and Civics. I also have a background in theater, where I continue to work as an actor and director.I love history. To me, history is far more than a random collection of names and dates, but rather a study of human ideas and achievements. Math teaches you to think logically, science to think analytically, language arts to expand your thinking beyond our own time and space, but history teaches you to think for yourself. Today, too many people get their information from internet headlines, or talking heads on television, or from their families or friends, and rarely take the time to really understand the world. With such an information overload, who are we to believe? The only way is to develop a full background, with multiple viewpoints, and then to develop one's own opinions. My approach is to study history from a conceptual framework, rather than chronological, to fully understand how the ideas of other times laid the foundations for our ongoing society today.

I am a 3rd year medical student looking to expand my skill in medicine and teaching. I have a bachelors in Math. I have been a tutor in math since freshmen year of college and I enjoy the satisfaction when someone smiles after understanding a concept that was once a problem. The way one gains a concept is amazing. I love teaching and I love helping. We are both learners!

As a passionate and dedicated educator, I am thrilled to be a part of the Varsity Tutors team. I am certified to teach English grades 7-12 in CT, I have my master's degree in English Literature, and my bachelor's degree in English with a concentration in secondary education. I have tutored and taught in college, high school, and middle school environments. Most recently, I held high school teaching positions teaching 9th and 11th grade English. In my freshman classes, we focused on composition, and finding a voice in writing. We worked with different mentor texts to refine our writing skills, as well as read an array of literature including classics like The Odyssey and Romeo and Juliet, and more modern texts including the graphic novel, A Monster Calls. I also have teaching experience at the middle school level, teaching 7th and 8th grade Language Arts. From this position, I have experience in SBAC exam preparation. I also am a scorer for the PARCC and SAT exams, making me an expert in their layout and content. When I teach and tutor, I foster an environment that is rigorous, well-supported, and comfortable. I look forward to adding to my love of teaching English by tutoring students as well!

I am currently a fourth grade teacher in Harlem. I live in Astoria, Queens. I have been teaching for five years and I am very passionate about teaching. I have taught math, reading, writing, science and social studies at the elementary level and am certified to teach special education as well.

I am a graduate of The College of William and Mary School of Marine Science at the Virginia Institute of Marine Science with a Ph.D. in Marine Science and minor in Marine Policy. My area of expertise is marine biology and ecology focusing primarily on how organisms fit in with and affect their habitat. I also have a Master's in marine science from the University of San Diego where I focused research on a small swimming red crab common to the southern Pacific Ocean along Baja California, Mexico, after first completing a Bachelor's of marine science at Coastal Carolina University near Myrtle Beach, SC. I enjoyed traveling to different coastal locations such as the eastern provinces of Canada, Hawaii and San Diego, CA, to participate in research as a volunteer. I even volunteered while a graduate student on a 2-week long research cruise that explored a unique ocean-bottom habitat off the coast of northern California. My favorite subjects are biology and ecology. As a marine scientist I am educated in the four major science disciplines of biology, chemistry, geology and physics as they relate to the ocean environment. I currently teach Introduction to Oceanography which introduces students to the ocean environment in the context of those same science. I also teach Introduction to Biology and laboratories in microbiology and basic human anatomy and physiology. I have tutored students at the schools where I teach general sciences as well as mathematics and statistics. I also have an undergraduate business degree in applying computer solutions to address business problems where I became well versed in Microsoft Office programs. I expanded my expertise in Microsoft Office programs throughout my science education. I believe everyone can learn and retain new material; it may just need to be delivered from a different perspective. I enjoy learning new "factoids" I can use to excel at trivia games. Reading is probably my most favorite activity and I really enjoy watching professional sports.

I have always been fascinated with how superior communication can affect the way one's perspective; Specifically, how fiction can shape the boundaries of the real world. Studying English, and writing in general, also allows the student to analyze information critically, which will help the student in every possible career choice.Personally, I grew up reading as much as I could, playing music, and studying film in order to understand as many aspects of the human condition as possible. I am a strong believer that when you take the time to study how something works, you can apply that investigative process to any subject and become a more well rounded person.

As an educator with two decades of experience in the classroom, I thoroughly enjoy seeing my students succeed. I have been teaching online courses as an adjunct professor and a graduate assistant since the Fall 2020 semester.I earned an MA in English and a BA in English Adolescence Education from State University of New York at Fredonia, and I am currently in the MFA program for a degree in Creative and Professional Writing at Western Connecticut State University.Since 2002, I have been writing and editing professionally since my first post-college job as a copy desk editor at a daily newspaper before finding my true calling as an educator.I believe that a student-centered approach to teaching serves the student more thoroughly. The teacher is the guide who helps the student navigate the assignments from all angles rather than a lecturer who quizzes on memorized material. Together, the student and the teacher work to reach the common goal of the student's success in the course.

My name is Gabriela Prieto, and I am a Board Certified Assistant Behavior Analyst with experience in both clinical practice and supervision. I earned my bachelor's degree in Psychology with a minor in Applied Behavior Analysis from Troy University and am completing my master's degree in Applied Behavior Analysis at Western Connecticut State University. My tutoring approach is structured, practical, and individualized. I help learners master the BACB Task List by breaking down complex concepts, connecting content to real clinical scenarios, and emphasizing understanding over memorization. I use active learning strategies, including discussion, practice questions, and behavioral skills training, to build both confidence and competency.
