I have taught and tutored college students in writing and literature for nearly a decade. At Creighton University, I taught Rhetoric and Composition, World Literature, and also worked with students in the Writing Center. I earned a Master of Arts in Creative Writing from Western Michigan University, where I taught Thought and Writing.I love working with students one-on-one and creating a personalized learning experience through open communication. My goal is to give students the encouragement, the confidence, and the strategies to make their writing shine and to help them express their thoughts and ideas in the best possible way.I'm also a published writer with short stories in The Louisville Review, Hawai'i Pacific Review, Valparaiso Fiction Review, and The Nassau Review. My self-published dystopian novel Never Too Far was a semi-finalist for the 2013 Best Indie Book Award as well as a Living Now Book Award Gold Medalist for adventure fiction.

I have a life-long commitment to education. I believe that, as an educator, I possess a unique form of authority; and the natural purpose of authority is to empower the steward of that authority to lead others to fulfillment. Thus, I have regarded my position as an educator with the utmost respect, as I have come to understand the importance of every moment I have with my students.Every lesson, interaction, assessment, project, and class discussion has the potential to bring each student one step closer to achieving their goals. When I do see my students achieve the success they seek, it is a profound moment, as these individuals commonly overcome academic and personal barriers. As an educator, I am committed to serving my students, community, and institutions. I am constantly seeking ways to improve and expand my present skill set so that I can maximize my potential, and the potential of my students in-and-out of the classroom. I have a rich interdisciplinary approach to teaching, and experience using a wide range of teaching styles and modalities.
I'm passionate about helping students expand their English knowledge. I understand that different individuals learn and retain information in different ways. As your tutor, I will work with your learning style so that you can learn in the way that is best for you!

I prefer to construct the concept for my students rather than teaching directly, as in traditional lecturemethods. I encourage students through group discussions, discussion board activities, and in-class problem-solving activities that improve student-student interactions. I am an individual who adjusts my teaching methods in order to get improved student output across her courses. I trained for online teaching and had experienced on online teaching.Interested courses: AP Physics 1, College Physics (Algebra based), University Physics (Calculus based), Fundamentals of Physics
Hi, I'm Meghan Anderson ("Meggie," for short.) I hold a Master's Degree in Elementary Education and Bachelor's Degrees in Psychology and English. I hold Michigan Teaching Certifications for both general and special education, K-8th grade. Throughout my years of experience teaching and tutoring, I've crafted a teaching style which focuses around three pillars: 1. Teacher/Student connection and prioritized rapport 2. Curiosity-driven, collaborative learning and frequent student self-reflection 3. Learning strategies rooted in both research-based educational and psychological practices I believe that learning works best when it's collaborative, joyful, and tailored to the individual student. When students enjoy their time in our sessions, their confidence grows, their willingness to try increases, and their academic progress accelerates. I have a creative mind, I am very accommodating, and if your learner struggles to understand a topic, I excel in coming up with a variety of ways to instruct them so that they will understand and be successful. I encourage students to reflect on their own learning. At the end of each session, we do a quick wrap up where they share things like what strategies helped them most, what felt challenging and what they'd like to adjust next time. This helps them master the material and develop a strong sense of their own learning style, a skill that supports them far beyond our tutoring sessions. While tutoring often focuses on academics, research shows that a student's emotional experience plays a major role in how they learn. My background in psychology helps me understand each student's unique personality, motivation, and needs. I use that insight to create a supportive environment where students feel safe, capable, and excited to grow. We can't always choose what we learn, but in my lessons we always choose how we learn. Together, we will figure out the right concoction of tools and strategies for your educational needs.
I am a graduate of Western Michigan University, where I majored in Elementary Education. After I graduated, I moved out to Arizona for a teaching job. I taught in the classroom for five years. I have taught one year of fifth grade Math, two years of third grade, and two years of second grade. Aside from my classroom teaching, I have several years of experience tutoring children of all ages in Reading and Math. Although I have many years experience in teaching and tutoring all subjects, Math is my favorite subject to teach. I truly enjoy helping students feel successful in school and fulfilling their love of learning. In my spare time, I enjoy hiking, reading, and spending time with my friends.
I strongly believe that anyone can learn a subject in the right settings. So my goal as a tutor is to provide as much assistance as I can to make sure Biology and other sciences can be understood. I provide advice, practice problems and plenty of in-depth explanations to make sure students learn not only main concepts but also additional facts and details that make the subject interesting. My experience with tutoring includes being a peer mentor for one academic year, interning with a local elementary school and volunteering in academic settings for over three years. I also studied abroad in Santander, Spain for seven weeks which has given me a wide range of experiences in various cultures. Recently I graduated with a B.S. in Biomedical Sciences and a B.A. in Spanish from Western Michigan University with plans to attend medical school. Therefore, I would be more than happy to assist others with learning scientific material. If you have the will there will be a way!
I earned my degree at Western Michigan University and Ritsumeikan in Japan. My degree in Creative Writing and Japanese Language have given me the opportunity to achieve my dream of learning and working in Japan. When I was a student, if I found a class fun and engaging, I learned. I aim to give my students a class that will inspire them, make them laugh, and help them reach their goals in education, whatever that may be. Let's learn and enjoy that journey! While I tutor a broad range of subjects, I am most passionate about Japanese, Writing, and History. My ESL teaching certification has allowed me to teach English and other test prep in Saitama and Kyoto, Japan, as well as schools in the US. I have had the opportunity to teach children as young as two years old and as old as 83. From one on one lessons to groups, I believe learning can be a fun experience and one to remember. When I am not sharing my love of learning, I am working on writing science fiction and fantasy novels. I believe the world is a better place with happy students who can enjoy learning and good books.I have always enjoyed learning, and becoming a teacher was the natural result of wanting to share the love of learning with others. As a teacher, I am always overjoyed to share my experiences of life in Japan and help my students find their own way to a greater world.I get excited when I understand new topics and love being able to share that feeling with others. Be it the joy of completing a draft of writing or the satisfaction of improving in a language, I want my students to feel confident and enjoy themselves. Learning is a choice- I want my students to leave class inspired and with skills to help them get to where they want to go.
I love helping students succeed by breaking down complex concepts into relatable fundamentals and real-world examples. My goal is to make learning feel approachable and manageable, even when the material seems intimidating at first. I believe that real growth happens when students face challenges head-on, so I encourage them to bring their biggest questions and concerns to our sessions. I create a supportive, low-pressure environment where students can ask anything, make mistakes, and build confidence as they learn.

I plan to graduate from Western Michigan University with a Bachelors in Mathematics in the Fall of 2024 and enjoy teaching others! I have taught students anywhere from 3rd grade to college in many different programs, or just the casual question in class. I look forward to working with you!
I believe fully in the philosophy of lifelong learning, and I plan to be a lifelong learner. For ten years, I have enjoyed tutoring others in my areas of strength, not only to help with content mastery, but also to help others enjoy becoming lifelong learners themselves. I have just graduated with my Master's degree in viola performance from Carnegie Mellon University, having earned a Bachelor's degree from Western Michigan University.I am a musician by training, but I enjoy seeking knowledge in all subjects, and sharing that knowledge with anybody who will listen. In particular, I love to tutor writing, because the tutoring process encompasses both the "strict" rules of written grammar and the "open-ended" rules of content organization. To learn to write, a student must learn to express ideas, and in this setting, tutors and students can truly get to know each other. The most effective learning comes after we make learning enjoyable. That takes effort from both the teacher and the student. The teacher should come to the table with a good method and the creativity to break from the method from time to time. The student should come with an open mind, a little bit of patience, and curiosity about at least one thing - even if it is not directly related to the lesson. Some of the best learning moments can start out as light conversations!
I am passionate about music and technology and have focused my entire career on both. I earned an Associates in Arts with a concentration on piano and organ, a Bachelor's in Applied Liberal Studies, and a Master's in Human Resource Development. My career as a parish organist/pianist began while in college, has spanned 48 years, and is still going strong. I currently play in two churches and am fortunate to work with congregations that have top of the line pianos and organs and value music. I've also taught piano and organ during my career. The pandemic and shut down gave me the opportunity to begin teaching piano virtually by way of FaceTime and Zoom. It took some thought, as well as experimenting. The end result is that I have a process and make it work very well. I was fortunate enough to spend 42 years working in technical fields, including system support, training (technical, information systems, and software applications), teaching at the community college and university level, and now, the best job of all, teaching computer courses to students in fifth eighth grade. I love being challenged, meeting new people, and learning new things! I look forward to what the future will bring!

Math can feel like a puzzle, and I love helping students put the pieces together! As an Applied Mathematics major at Western Michigan University (summa cum laude), I've spent over two years creating "aha!" moments for students through personalized, interactive tutoring sessions. Whether it's conquering calculus or mastering discrete mathematics, my mission is to make math less intimidating and more empowering. I've worked with diverse learners, from mentoring peers at the university to designing 1,000+ math problems for Olympiad preparation. My approach combines patience, creative problem-solving, and a splash of humor to keep things engaging. I believe math isn't just about numbersit's about thinking critically, spotting patterns, and building confidence. My favorite topics to tutor? Calculus and mathematical modeling, because they're like playgrounds for ideas! I focus on understanding "why" behind concepts, not just the "how," helping students build a solid foundation for future success. My style is all about collaboration, using active learning techniques, and celebrating progress to keep motivation high. When I'm not tutoring, you'll find me exploring data science projects, tinkering with AI tools, or leading community initiatives like training underprivileged women in business skills. Fun fact: I also co-founded a candle-making startup because creativity isn't limited to the classroom! Let's make math your superpowerone concept at a time.

Persistence pays off. This is the primary lesson I have learned through my lifelong journey in the pursuit of knowledge. My passion for knowledge and education began as a sophomore in high school while taking my first advanced placement course, AP Psychology. Along with psychology I would go on to complete a number of advanced placement courses including AP Biology, AP Environmental Science, AP Statistics, AP US History, AP European History, and AP Literature before graduating High School. After High School I attended Florida State University (FSU) where I received a double major in Exercise Physiology and Psychology as well as a minor in Biomedical Physics. As an undergraduate I volunteered in a Neuroscience laboratory within the Department of Psychology where I learned numerous research techniques in the field of Neuroscience. Following my graduation from FSU I worked as a Laboratory Manager and a Research Associate before completing my Master of Science degree in Biological Sciences from Western Michigan University (WMU). I have extensive experience teaching college level students including my time spent as a teaching assistant for Physiological Psychology and as an Instructor of Record for Human Anatomy Form and Function taught at FSU and WMU respectively.
ACADEMIC BACKGROUND Growing up, I attended a small high school and found learning in school challenging. I moved away to college, and that is when the learning gap became evident. College was significantly more demanding than I anticipated, but I attributed any learning deficits to a lack of intelligence. A few years later, I met several inspirational instructors who saw my potential to succeed in the health sciences. They guided me through their courses and taught me to learn and study effectively. I developed a deeper understanding of what it meant to study science, and only then did I fall in love with academia and learning. While these challenges set me back in my studies, this experience allowed me to find a meaningful passion for teaching others how to learn. Tutoring allows me to help students sooner in their programs and avoid some of the negative experiences I had with academia earlier in my career. I have worked with many types of students, including high school valedictorians and students who have always found school challenging. I taught at a four-year university for eight years but have been a tutor for roughly 12 years. In addition to tutoring, I also advise and mentor students pursuing careers in health sciences, including pre-medical, pre-nursing, pre-physician assistant, and other health-related occupations. In 2012, I graduated Cum Lade with a Bachelor of Science in Graphic Design with a minor in Marketing from Northern Michigan University. After graduation, I completed my pre-medical coursework for medical school and applied to graduate school. In 2018, I graduated with a Master of Arts in Biological Sciences with a concentration in Biomedical Sciences. During that time, I was a Graduate Teaching Assistant and earned my first Teaching Effectiveness Award. TEACHING & RESEARCH EXPERIENCE In 2018, I started a Doctoral Program in Science Education. My research interests include cognition, metacognition, and problem-solving in undergraduate and graduate medical education. My research centers on understanding student thinking and learning while problem-solving questions on standardized examinations. I taught as a lecture instructor and laboratory teaching assistant and earned my second Teaching Effectiveness Award. I have experience teaching courses in-person and online, and in some semesters, I taught courses with up to 170 students in a single semester. After graduation, my goal is to attend medical and law school under a combined MDJD program and someday open my own clinical practice. TEACHING PHILOSOPHY As an educator, the best subjects to teach are those students can relate to the most. Connecting theory and application helps students enjoy learning, thus improving material retention. Learning burdens many students, but I strive to make learning engaging and enjoyable. The more students can understand what they are learning and, more importantly, why they are learning it, the less effort it takes to recall that information later. I work with students to develop their study skills and deepen their understanding of how to learn during and after tutoring sessions. I apply cognitive-constructivism learning theory during our sessions, requiring students to take on an active role during the learning process. How students learn largely depends on how their minds make sense of the material, and that only works if the student is motivated to improve and has a growth mindset. I use a "Talk-Aloud" learning approach, where students verbalize their thought process as they read through content or solve problems. Talk-Aloud allows me to visualize how the student processes information in their mind. Then, I can identify where they might understand a concept or miss a key detail. If that sounds complicated, it is easier to think of a Talk-Out-Loud as a mind-reading superpower that allows an instructor to "see" what errors students make as they learn. Learning is a two-way process requiring students to review the material before and after each session. Tutors are great for helping students identify problems, but they cannot possibly make students remember everything covered in sessions. It is up to the student to commit to the learning process, ask questions during each session, and review material often on their own time. My goal as a tutor is to help students develop critical thinking and learning strategies to become better independent learners, which will help them succeed in their programs and life. TUTORING EXPERIENCE Standardized exams - Test of Essential Academic Skills (TEAS) - Law School Admission Test (LSAT) - Medical College Admissions Test (MCAT) Coursework - General Biology - Cell Biology - Microbiology - Genetics - Human Anatomy & Physiology I and II - General Chemistry I and II - Organic Chemistry I and II - Biochemistry - Physics I and II (algebra-based) - Pathology - Pathophysiology - Pharmacology - Medical Terminology - Neurobiology - Endocrinology - Bioethics - Psychology - Sociology - Constitutional Law I and II - Criminal Law & Procedure - Business Law
I am a graduate of Baldwin Wallace University's Physician Assistant Program where I earned my Master of Medical Science. Following graduation, I achieved passing the Physician Assistant National Certification Exam (PANCE), upholding my programs 100% first-time PANCE pass rate for the sixth year in a row. Previous to this, I earned a Bachelor of Science from Western Michigan University. I have always had a passion for teaching as well as medicine. Using my experience passing a rigorous PA program as well as PANCE, I am confident that the tools I utilized will lead other students to success. I also acknowledge that each student is an individual who has different study habits and tools that lead them to success thus far and therefore, these should be implemented into a study plan that we will create together. I am a firm believer in individualized study plans and practice questions leading to success. I know these students have already achieved a great deal passing their rigorous physician assistant programs and believe they have the dedication and knowledge needed to achieve passing the PANCE as well. I am merely here to help make their dream of earning their well-deserved "C"(for certified) a reality.
I am a graduate of Western Michigan University where I received my Ph.D. in Mathematics, specifically Graph Theory. I taught for over 20 years in academia at various institutions, including Grand Valley State University, the University of Vermont, and Illinois State University. Now, I am an editor for a large mathematical database located in Ann Arbor, MI. While I love what I do as an editor, I find that I am missing the one-on-one interactions with students that I found to be the most gratifying when I was teaching. I enjoy tutoring a broad range of subjects and feel strongly that everyone can be successful in mathematics. In my interactions with students, I strive to present things in a variety of ways to facilitate understanding and connection. I am available to tutor most afternoons and evenings and some weekends. In my spare time, I enjoy yoga, biking, reading, and spending time with family and friends.
I'm passionate about guiding students in the world of philosophy and the humanities more broadly. With 7 years of teaching experience at the college level and many years of tutoring outside of college, I know what it's like to be stuck and lost in navigating difficult concepts. I believe in guiding students in incremental and simple steps to more challenging material, and that every student can be successful.

For as long as I can remember, I've connected well with children. I've always had a passion for helping others, specifically children, and watching them grow. I attended Western Michigan University for my undergraduate where I majored in Criminal Justice and Sociology with a minor in Psychology. I received my Masters degree in Elementary Education at Western Michigan as well. I spent three years working in a preschool setting during my undergraduate years where I was an assistant teacher as well as a lead teacher. While completing my Master's degree program, I student taught in a 2nd grade classroom for a full year. By the end of the year, I was teaching all class subjects (including lesson planning) independently for the entire school day. During my student teaching, I also had the opportunity to substitute teach and observe in any of the K-5 classrooms. I am qualified to tutor in all K-5 Elementary subjects. My favorite subjects to teach are English and Science because I excel in those subjects myself. However, I am always ready for an opportunity to expand my knowledge in other subject areas while helping students. Teaching Philosophy I believe that all children are capable of learning. Not one child learns the same way or has the same needs of another child. All children deserve modifications and accommodations based on their strengths, challenges, interests, background, cultures, and learning style. Communication with student families is crucial to understanding and learning more about students and to help children learn to their highest capacity. I will strive to create a classroom that is a safe space for all children to learn, grow, and achieve rich learning. I will incorporate the use of differentiation, whole group, small group, and independent work. Flexible seating will be made available throughout the classroom. Diverse and interesting curriculum will be implemented that incorporates student interests and cultures. Engaging, and exploratory content will always be a focus in my lesson planning. Students will have vast opportunities to explore, discover, and question as they learn new content. I believe teaching social and emotional skills is just as important as educational content for students to function in society including problem solving skills, independence, self-regulation, and coping skills. When teaching and interacting with students, I will keep an open mind, be understanding of students and any outside factors that may be impacting them and their learning. Each student will be held to high expectations tailored to their individual needs. I will maintain a strong classroom community based on mutual respect, kindness, and fairness.

An alumnus tutor understands the WMU academic environment in ways an outside tutor cannot. They've taken the same courses, worked with the same departments, and navigated the same institutional structures. This means they can offer course-specific advice, explain how concepts connect to upper-level coursework you might take, and share strategies that worked for them as WMU students. It's like learning from someone who's already walked the path you're on.
