In short, I am an affable, non-judgmental teacher, and am broadly qualified to tutor everything from basic literacy, to specialized test-prep, to college-level composition. I have almost a decade's worth of experience teaching and tutoring for the verbal sections of the English Regents, SAT, ACT, AP Language, and AP Literature exams, and served as an undergraduate at the Georgetown University Writing Center. I began teaching English and math to middle school students in 2012. When I was working at Urban Science Academy in NYC, I remember one particular student of mine who had anxiety when taking tests. They become scatterbrained and unfocused, unable to stop shaking their leg and playing with their pencil, rather than using it. A few weeks leading up to the state tests, I led students in a class debate while teaching a unit on argumentative essay writing. Through my support and guidance, this student spoke with confidence and poise while using evidence to back up his claim. This moment solidified my passion for creating an inquiry-based learning environment where students are critical thinkers, feel empowered, engaged in the material they are learning, and inspired to speak their opinions confidently.In the five years I have been teaching, I am most proud of building valuable and trusting relationships with my students. These relationships spark higher motivation for learning and more positive and healthy social interactions. In my 7th grade math classroom this year, I worked with a student who had consistently scored low on his quarterly assessments up through this year. He struggled with impulse control and had a difficult time focusing for longer periods of time; yet he was very bright, hard working, and asked questions in class everyday. After I worked with him in a small group setting and helped him build confidence, he jumped 30 points. This was a huge success and confidence booster for him. As a tutor, I will bring the qualities I have developed as a classroom teacher, creating a safe environment where students can think outside of the box, make mistakes, and take control over their own learning, to my tutoring sessions.

During sophomore year of college, I had the opportunity to help high school students from underprivileged backgrounds study for the SAT. There were about 30 students in each room with just two teachers, and I knew I had my work cut out for me, but I wanted to make a difference in an important time in their lives as they studied the math and English skills needed to do well on the exam and get accepted to the colleges they desired. Every time I saw a score increase on a practice test, I knew I was making a difference, and that gave me deep satisfaction. On the elementary and middle school level, I've helped family friends who were having difficulty in their classes understand concepts through easy-to-learn tools that simplified what may have seemed complicated before. When they do well on an exam, I know I served them well. I look back on the quote I chose in my high school yearbook from Jackie Robinson, the first Major League Baseball player to cross the color barrier: "A life is not important except in the impact it has on other lives." I am a graduate of CUNY Hunter College with a Bachelors in Latin and Ancient Greek, as well as a Masters in Adolescent Latin Education. I have years of experience tutoring just about every age group and level of Latin (6th grade through college), even founded an afterschool Latin tutoring program for elementary school students, and taught Middle School Latin for the DOE. I am passionate about teaching students because I found myself through Classics, first stumbling on Ancient Greek through the historian Herodotus, "The Father of History," and teaching myself the language outside of a school setting. This is how I found my love for classical languages and learning in general really. This interest extended to Latin, for which I was prepared because of the rigor of Greek. A scholarship through my school allowed me to study Greek abroad in Athens, Greece; and another scholarship in the name of the Pope's Latinist, Reginald Foster, brought me to Rome, Italy to study Classical, Medieval, Renaissance, and mostly spoken Latin through the Paideia Institute. Furthermore, I encourage students to find the beauty of Latin and Greek for their own sake, which still nonetheless echo through every modern discipline today. In this way, they will become better readers and writers, and ultimately better learners, as these classical languages shape their minds.

My job as a teacher is to help all students feel successful. Hi, I'm Brogan. I am currently pursuing my Master's degree in Occupational Therapy. After excelling in Anatomy and Physiology I and II, I was hired as a tutor for my College's learning center, to help students gain an interactive understanding of class material, prepare for exams, meet their grade goals, and practice effective study techniques.Some of the abstract concepts covered in Anatomy and Physiology can be confusing, especially since they are only layered on top of each other in subsequent chapters. However, through visualizing the "story" of each seemingly abstract concept, and connecting each piece of information to each other, everything truly begins to make more sense - and it even allows one to garner an excitement for the subject (and for our own anatomical bodies!). I am currently pursuing my bachelor's degree in Biochemistry at Hunter College. I have had many years of tutoring experience, ranging from elementary school classes to college level courses. I tutor algebra, geometry, calculus, chemistry, physics, reading comprehension, and writing composition. My favorite subjects to teach is physics because many students view it as a hard science, but after tutoring, they feel it to be much more intuitive than they initially believed. I received my first training as a tutor in two undergraduate courses which prepared me for my job as a general chemistry tutor at Rollins College, where I received my B.A. in chemistry and mathematics.
