As a long time writing tutor and a freshman composition professor, the study and teaching of writing is near and dear to my heart. While my research in both my MA and my PhD focus on academic writing, I have an appreciation for composing of all kinds, and love the ways that different genres play with different writing tools. I love to work with students on developing their writing and revising skills in any number of disciplines, and have the most experience working with academic essays, dissertations and theses, MLA and APA format, and creative writing. I enjoy working on all kinds of writing at all stages and will be there to help you develop writing skills that will not just improve your assignment, but your understanding of writing as well.

I am currently pursuing a Masters in Mechanical Engineering at the University of Texas ??? Austin. I previously received my B.A. in Mathematics and Spanish from Goucher College in Baltimore, MD. I have always loved mathematics for the fun (yes, fun!) challenge of problem-solving and have tutored/taught the subject for several years. My teaching style is very student-oriented and I like to teach my students that they can easily learn the tools necessary to solve mathematical puzzles and love to see their confidence grow as they realize their own potential. I respect that each student has his or her strengths and weaknesses and I do not accept that math is undoable for any student. I encourage students to approach each problem and concept in their own particular way so that they can discover their own problem-solving technique and grow confident in their abilities. I also work with my students to improve their organizational and study skills, which helps in all of their coursework. I like getting to know my students and for them to feel comfortable asking questions, making mistakes, and even challenging any mistakes I may make. I was born and raised in Houston, but have lived in Baltimore, Gerihun (Sierra Leone), and now Austin. My favorite things to do during my time off are swimming, playing soccer, watching action/mystery movies, traveling, and spending time with family and friends.

When I took the SHSAT, I qualified for the Advanced Science track at Stuyvesant High School. I have also stayed familiar with the SAT and ACT.My test preparation is rooted in knowing the test material, and then performing on test day. Test anxiety is a problem for many students, and with my psychology background students learn to test with confidence.In my spare time, I am a voracious reader and write and perform comedy, including stand up, sketch and improv.

I'm a lifelong communicator who has spent years helping people shape their ideas into clear, meaningful writing whether in professional roles, in high school and college classrooms, or at home coaching my own kids through essays and projects. I'm also a trained coach, which means I pay close attention to how students think and learn, not just what ends up on the page. When I work with students, we take the assignment one step at a time. We talk through their ideas, sort out what they're really trying to say, and turn that into something they feel good about. I offer steady guidance, honest feedback, and a supportive space where students can ask questions and build confidence as they go. I love working with learners who want room to grow, explore their voice, and feel supported as they figure out how to express their own ideas.

I am a senior undergraduate Biochemistry and Molecular Biology major with a Psychology minor at Goucher College and will be attending Drexel University's College of Medicine in the fall of 2018. Attending a liberal arts college has given me a diverse skill set to learn new things and tackle challenges in different ways. I have been a chemistry tutor at my college for the past 2 1/2 years. I believe that tutoring is a very rewarding job. I love interacting with students and helping them reach that "light bulb" moment when everything becomes clear. I also like the one-on-one attention that I can give students because I believe it really helps with understanding. While I can help students in many subjects my favorite subject to tutor is General Chemistry. I believe it is a challenging subject for many students seeing it for the first time but with a little explanation it can become second nature rather easily. When I am not busy studying or helping students I enjoy exercising and cooking!

I am a graduate of Goucher College, where I received my B.A. in Physics with a concentration in astronomy, and the University of Colorado at Boulder, where I received my M.S. in Mechanical Engineering. I have been tutoring and teaching on and off since my senior year of college. That year, I served as a supplementary instructor for introductory physics courses. I led weekly group tutoring sessions with 15 or more students, where we collaboratively worked on homework problems and practice quiz and exam problems. In 2012 after graduating, I taught science and outdoor education classes to children ages 9-14 for 5 months at an astronomy-themed camp in the mountains in southern California. During grad school in 2013, I was a teaching assistant for undergraduate engineering courses in fluid mechanics and thermodynamics. In the spring of 2014, I volunteered at a high school in Longmont, Colorado helping high school students prepare for AP exams in calculus and physics.My background is in physics and engineering, lately with a focus on renewable energy and environmental issues. I love to tutor in physics and calculus because of the trickiness of the problems and the unique euphoria students can feel when they master the analytical techniques required to solve these types of problems. My tutoring philosophy is to empower students to feel confident in their own abilities, NOT to cultivate dependence or rote memorization. To do this, I tend to ask a lot of questions, utilize my sense of humor, try to get students to approach problems and difficult concepts in new and different ways, and emphasize rigor, devotion and effort. I believe that learning is about reaching inward into your belief and potential more so than filling in blanks correctly on a test. That said, I take approaches to conventional classroom techniques seriously and have extensive experience figuring out how to solve problems quickly and efficiently and perform well on tests. Overall, I see myself as a teammate as well as a coach when I tutor, to provide encouragement and empathy as well as guidance.In my spare time, I am an avid rock climber and mountaineer, and my other hobbies include soccer, tennis, running, reading and writing. I love to stay active but feel nearly equally as comfortable with a good book.

I am a senior at Goucher College studying Elementary Education, completing classes specifically on teaching the topics of science, math, social studies, reading and writing. I have worked in preschool as an assistant teacher and completed student teaching both virtually and in person in a 4th grade class where I taught five days a week covering topics including health, social studies, math, science, reading and writing. My previous experience has also included working with students with learning disabilities, ADHD and autism. My favorite subjects to teach are reading and math, as I love working with students to build on these foundational skills that they are able to apply in different areas of their life. I also tutor science and social studies, and my favorite part of tutoring these subjects is watching students connect to these topics and become interested in the in the material. As an educator, I am passionate about the importance of teaching in a way that helps students become engaged in what they are learning and working with students to build skills they can apply in a wide variety of settings. I work to meet students where they are at and build on their strengths as an individual to help them succeed.

My name is Marie. I hold a bachelors degree in chemistry and have completed a year of graduate school towards a PhD in organic chemistry. One of my favorite things about chemistry is finding new strategic ways to solve problems. While in high school I tutored middle school math and once I was in college I began tutoring in chemistry and biology. It always feels really rewarding to teach someone something or help them see it in a new light.

I believe that education is the key to success. With a background in cultural sustainability, partnerships, and digital media, I can teach a variety of subjects, including but not limited to: history, algebra, study skills, and coding in python, javascript, and css.
