I am a qualified English teacher and tutor with over 25 years of teaching experience in the US and UK. I hold a BA Honors in English Literature and Creative Writing and a Master's Degree in English, Creative Writing, and American Studies from NYU. I am also a published author. In addition, I am a certified English Teacher in both the US and the UK. I have extensive experience working with K-12 students, helping them build confidence and strong literacy skills in reading, writing, grammar, vocabulary, and communication. I specialize in teaching middle and high school English, AP English Language and Literature, college level Rhetoric, and Composition.
I recently graduated summa cum laude from Hobart College with degrees in French and Francophone Studies and European Studies and a minor in Environmental Studies. I have three years of experience tutoring French students of all levels at Hobart and William Smith Colleges between 2014 and 2016.Although I am not a native French speaker, I believe that I am better equipped to teach the language since I have gone through the learning process myself.I am approachable, patient, and flexible and I believe it is a joy to teach.
Currently enrolled in Los Angeles Community College, I am able to always be practicing my study skills whether it is by myself or with a Varsity Tutor client. I am working towards transferring and eventually receiving my Bachelors in Spanish and Environmental Science.I have been tutoring elementary and middle school students in various homework subject for five years now. Being only twenty myself, I find relating to the students very easily which in my opinion, is the greatest way to helping a student understand a lesson or an assignment. Besides tutoring, I have been lucky enough to design and teach my own curriculum for a summer high school course called "Spanish for Travelers."Outside of academia, I enjoy reading, watching, playing and analyzing basketball. It is a sport, along with soccer, that has represented tranquility and family passion since I was a child. In addition, playing cultural music on my tenor saxophone has been a big part of my identity since fourth grade.
My entire career, both as a tutor and a classroom teacher, has been teaching both the subject matter and aspect of teaching English or German and encouraging students to be receptive to material. To this end I spend my energy crafting the way it is presented which takes time but it is well spent. Working the material or lesson to the needs of the student means including how best to get the material across. I seek any way I can to reach a particular student or class. This may consist of finding patterns, relating to the student's life, reaching for tasks that are meaningful and, yes, even fun.
I have a Bachelor of Arts in Economics from Hobart and William Smith Colleges where I was President of my fraternity and played on the golf team. I received an M.B.A in Finance from the Rochester Institute of Technology where I had a research assistantship and completed a 6 month Co-op Education position with IBM. I still play golf, belong to a backgammon club, and help manage my parents Charitable Remainder Trust investments. I spent 2 years tutoring elementary children reading and writing and have just joined a high school/college mentoring program in the area. I believe I can help students who may not have the help they need at home or at school.
Learning is a lifetime journey - and you're never too old to embark on a new chapter. Take up painting for fun, a martial art, read a book in a subject you never thought you might be interested. Above all, remember to keep yourself exploring new and different latitudes.
While I attended Culver Military Academy, I developed a passion for argumentative writing which served me well in my APLAC and AP Government courses. From there, I went on to receive my Bachelor's from Hobart & William Smith Colleges, double majoring in English and Media and double minoring in History and Entrepreneurial Studies. Since graduating, I have been working with students individually to hone their writing skills, specifically regarding ACT test prep material.
