Science has always been a passion of mine, especially with regards to Biology. It's what drove me to pursue a degree in Biology, and eventually Medicine. Writing has also been a passion of mine. I love to write poetry, fiction, and expository essays. As I have had to write for coursework, college admissions, and medical school admissions, critiquing and correcting papers is something I feel very comfortable with.I like to utilize my creativity in ways that have meaning. As someone who has been through a lot of schooling, I know how difficult it can be to grasp certain topics, so it takes a creative approach. I have always been a proponent of hands-on and visual learning. But I also recognize that each student has their own special way of learning--some may like visual, some may like auditory, some may like movement.I have experience teaching high school science and informally tutoring peers in Biology when I was in college. Teaching high school, I worked with lots of kids who had ADD/ADHD or were on the autism spectrum. It was rewarding to see all my students, regardless of their learning abilities or background, finally understand a difficult or challenging concept. Should you choose me to be your tutor, I look forward to bringing that same feeling to you!

My name is Joy Rhodes and I'm a freshman Psychology major at Howard University. School has always been a place of successful learning and growing curiosity for me. Though I've always performed well in my academics, I didn't develop a love for tutoring until my junior and senior year of high school. I'd always be the kid in class to help my peers work through a problem, but I never considered working one on one with other students until I was inducted into my high school's Math Honors Society. Through this, I was required to tutor and work with students in a variety of subjects including the following: Algebra 1, Basic Math, Reading and Writing, and Spanish. Seeing my students' eyes light up as they worked through an assignment that they didn't think they could solve brought me great joy. In addition to tutoring, I was a Math Senior Leader at my high school. I assisted in teaching Algebra 1 to a class of freshmen. This was very important to me because tutoring and teaching became less about getting the student to do their work, and more about the special bonds that I've built with them in their successful learning process. Outside of math, I've received my Illinois State Seal of Biliteracy in the Spanish Language. I've also been a section leader in my orchestra for the past 7 years. Being a section leader not only required me to work with violinists in mastering their pieces, I've also volunteered with children learning to play the violin, and teaching them basic music theory. All of these experiences are what have brought me here today. Not only do I love learning, I love working with those who have a desire to learn and helping them overcome their obstacles.
I have tutored K-12 students since 2006. I love to empower students and help them with their academic challenges. I have had the privilege of tutoring students in Chicago, Washington DC, Newark, NJ and Baton Rouge. As a former History, Algebra 1 and Physics teacher for secondary students, I have been able to implement my strategies and tips from the classroom into my tutoring style.
I am a master's student at Brown University. I graduated from Howard University with a Bachelor of Science in Biology and a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology. While I tutor a wide variety of subjects, I am most passionate about Spanish, math, and English with over 5 years of teaching experience. I also have a Seal of Biliteracy, meaning I am able to teach in both English and Spanish. I hope to work with you soon!
I received my Bachelor of Arts in English and Spanish from Howard University and worked as an educator and as a communications administrator for several years post college. During my career as a communications administrator, I enrolled at Massachusetts College of Art and Design in pursuance of my Fashion Design Certificate. My education from MassArt inspired me to become a wardrobe consultant and to found A Balanced Wardrobe LLC. Though I've transitioned from academia to business and fashion, I still rely heavily on my reading and writing skills. These skills transcend all professions, as they are fundamental to our ability to learn and to communicate effectively on paper and in-person. During my years in education, I engaged with many students who struggled in reading and writing, and typically, these same students struggled in other subjects; in math they struggled to read word problems and in science they struggled to write their lab results. Working with these students gave me first-hand experience at how to help students strengthen their comprehension without hurting their confidence. Over time, I found that patience, consistent positive reinforcement and persistent redirection are key, and it is these same techniques that I utilize with my Varsity Tutors students. Without reading and writing skills, I would have never been able to traverse so many different fields and discover my passion, and through tutoring, I hope to help my students achieve the same.
I am a proud graduate of Howard University where I received my degree in Business Management. I've worked with children for ten years as a dance teacher, daycare manager, and private tutor specializing in online learning support during COVID. I am most passionate about Math at the elementary level. I believe that building a foundation where students love to learn, no matter the subject, fosters independence, confidence, and a skillset that will serve them in conquering more advanced subject matter. In my free time, I love dancing, reading, pilates, and going to live concerts/theater performances.
I am a New York State Certified Teacher in grades 1-6. I received my M. Ed from Mercy College. I have been teaching for the past 10 years and I have taught grades 4-6, and 8th grade. I spent 7 years alone in 5th grade where I developed my own curriculum on fractions. There are 4 presentations on fractions each covering all 4 operations. Each day's lesson is embedded with videos of me giving a tutorial on how to solve the specific type of problem we are addressing.A school is a place that should be fun and engaging for all parties involved. I create content so the classroom structure is more student-centered and use apps to engage scholars. No subject should be stressful especially for a 10-year-old.My undergrad degree is in Theatre Arts: Acting from Howard University and I spend my free time writing and shooting movies.
I first became introduced to tutoring my junior year in college when I received the opportunity to work with students in a failing high school. We were tasked with getting the students SAT/ACT ready and subsequently apply for college. One of my proudest moments to date was receiving the news that all students from the program had applied to college. My tutoring experience has since moved on from to a more privatized setting but the reward has remained the same. Working students to build their confidence in and outside the classroom is an indescribable gift that I am fortunate enough to possess. My tutoring style of getting to know the student and parent and developing an action plan unique to the student has proven to be successful and appreciated in the past.I am recent graduate of Howard University, B.A. in Political Science, Magna Cum Laude. I have since been accepted into law school and intend on going in the fall.
I am a recent graduate of Tulane University, where I received my Master of Science in Cell and Molecular Biology. For my undergraduate years I attended Howard University in Washington, DC, where I was a Biology major and Chemistry minor. I have traveled to the Caribbean as well as to China for study abroad programs. While a student at Howard University, I worked with DC Public Schools as an elementary and middle tutor. I was also an assigned tutor for Biology and Organic Chemistry at Howard University. I am able to help with a variety of subjects such as Biology, Chemistry, Physiology, Genetics and other basic sciences. I can also help with AP Calculus if need be. My favorite subject to tutor is Biology because I have a passion for helping students understand how living organisms work. I feel it is my strongest subject, and I know I can help committed students learn the material. My tutoring style is geared towards making the experience of studying the material enjoyable for the student. I often use mnemonics and analogies to make the information more understandable. I also promote notecards to study as it improves retention of information.I am a very outgoing, friendly, and patient individual. I am able to travel to meet with clients, and if there is still difficulty with any subject, I will offer to tutor at a library or college. My parents are both college professors, so I know the value of a great education. I will be sure to work with students until they are satisfied and feel comfortable with any subject that I teach. In my spare time, I enjoy fishing and playing sports. I was a goalkeeper for my high school and played intramural soccer in college. I also play billiards and cards with friends on quiet evenings.
I was born and raised in Trinidad, one half of the country of Trinidad and Tobago. There I fell in love with Mathematics, studying varying aspects of it, from Pre-Algebra to Applied Mathematics.I furthered my interest to tutor in college at Howard University, where I gained experience tutoring university student athletes. This occurred for three years while I reviewed statistics for the university's admission office.Fast forward to 2013, when I started my matriculation to gain my Masters of Finance at University of Rochester, I tutored my fellow classmates and other students at the university that needed help with differential equations and calculus based questions.I have experience working with Mathematics for years, and Finance (I have six years career experience) and am excited to tutor you the students!
I am a graduate of Howard University and of the University of Michigan Law School. In addition to my law degree, I have received undergraduate degrees in English and Philosophy. My work has been published in many newspapers and magazines including USA Today, the Nashville Tennessean, the Baltimore Sun, the Asbury Park Press, the Michigan Daily, the Army Times, and the Honolulu Advertiser. I have won several awards from state and national press associations for my work. I am also an adjunct legal studies professor in the Roher College of Business at Rowan University. Since 2003, I have tutored students preparting to take the SAT, GRE, and LSAT. While I tutor a variety of subjects, I am most passionate about English and Social Studies. For both subjects, my tutoring style is focused on ascertaining and addressing the student's specific needs, but tends to focus on improving student's ability to read texts actively and for understanding, teaching students to take and rewrite class notes, and learning to write effective essays. I have many hobbies and interests. I am a huge sports fan. I follow the Dallas Cowboys, Philadelphia Phillies, Philadelphia 76ers, and the Michigan Wolverines. I am an avid reader of literature and history. I enjoy writing, cooking, biking and golfing. I love to travel. Most recently, I have traveled to Ethiopia, South Africa, and Switzerland. I plan to visit China this summer.
I am a New York native and a graduate of Virginia State University. I am a young, hardworking student that will probably be a student long past receiving my Ph.D! I have a hunger for education and will never stop learning. My experiences range from Criminal Justice and Sociology to ESL and U.S. History! I hope to share this passion for knowledge with anyone willing to listen.
I hold a Masters in Education (Reading Specialist), from Howard University (Washington, DC) and my earlier academic pursuit, in Speech Pathology and Elementary Education, was completed as a dual Bachelor of Science degree from Central Michigan University (Mt. Pleasant, Michigan). My 25 plus years experience in the profession of Education has been a labor of compassion, commitment, and an extraordinary experience, that led me to receive STEM Certification from Columbia University and Adams University, from NASA Endeavors Fellow Program. Since retirement from the public school systems of Washington, DC and Baltimore County Public Schools, I have tutored and mentored students from other countries, Alternative Education Programs, and Public Schools; and during the last two years, tutored online. (Which I found very exciting!) I have taught grades K-6; and 7-8.I have managed STEM programs and have received various recognition from national organizations and the Department of Education (retired Secretary of Education Arne Duncan).I am most passionate about Reading and Literacy. I have experience helping struggling students who have gaps in their reading comprehension and writing areas. I come from a family of educators, musicians, and community activists, who strengthen my knowledge for learning and having fun while learning. I try to impart this appreciation to all of my students. I enjoy reading and watching movies. I have traveled to China, Haiti, Nigeria, Mexico, and various states. When I was young, READING about far away places encouraged me to visit different areas of the world. With that experience, I felt the world was smaller than what I thought and I deserved to help improve it.
I am delighted when my students accomplish their goals. Their achievement is my joy.
I am a graduate of the University of Maryland College Park, where I received my Bachelor of Arts in Communications with a focus on political rhetoric and my Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology, and Howard University School of Law where I received my Juris Doctor. I look forward to helping you advance in your studies.

As part of this role, I've supported students from all backgrounds and skill levels including high achievers, students with ADHD, students on the spectrum, and vocational students.
To understand my perspective on education, it is important to know my background. I am the son of a former New York City administrator and educator. I started learning math at the age of three as I was enrolled in a Montessori school as a toddler. Knowing that the quality of the education students were receiving in NYC public schools, my mother sacrificed and sent me to a private parochial school from 1st-8th grade.I tested into Brooklyn Technical High School, one of the three specialized high schools in New York City, but opted to attended a school that had a pre-med program in my borough. I took anatomy and advanced placement courses and earned a National Merit Scholarship based on my PSAT performance.I then attended the leading historically Black university, Howard University, where I majored in Biology an minored in Chemistry. I went on to take the Graduate Record Exam (GRE) and Medical College Admissions Test (MCAT), attend graduate and medical school and I received Masters and Doctoral degrees in Genetics and Human Genetics.I matriculated through the first two years of medical school and successfully passed Step 1 of the United States Medical Licensing Exam of USMLE.In addition to the concepts covered in the classes and courses, I am also very familiar with the application processes and all of the standardized tests required for entry into both graduate and medical school as well as their respective prep courses. My teaching philosophy is that any student can learn any concept if it is presented in a way that is compatible with their learning style. The concept of learning style is one that I was introduced to rather late in my academic career. However, I think this is the key and a major reason that many students struggle in school. After being introduced to the concept, I could identify the reasons that I performed so much better in high school biology than I did in chemistry. With this understanding, one of the first things I ask student I tutor is if they know what their learning style is. If they don't, recommend they use a free online assessment to find out. If you are interested in working with me and do not know what your learning style is, please take a few minutes to take a learning style assessment and find out. You will be glad you did.
I first started tutoring as a sophomore in high school, helping kids younger than me get through some of their tougher classes. When I was in college I continued tutoring after approached by my Biology and Chemistry professors. The one thing I enjoy most about tutoring is helping someone to achieve that breakthrough moment. Two heads are often better than one. When you get stuck on a particular concept, it's great to have someone who can help you out of that rut!
I have over 25 years of experience in education. I graduated from Howard University with a Bachelors Degree in Psychology, before getting my teachers certification. I received my Masters of Education in School Leadership from Cambridge College and a Masters of Education in School Counseling from the University of West Alabama. I have worked in elementary, middle and high school as a teacher and school counselor. As an elementary school teacher, I specialized in the teaching of reading and language arts. My love and excitement for reading followed me into the classroom which allowed me to have great success with struggling readers. As a school counselor, I used bibliotherapy to help students see themselves in characters and learn strategies to overcome various obstacles. When I ran out of books with the topics needed, I wrote my own coping skills book for kids. I help students identifying their learning styles, study skills, and much more while understanding and addressing underlying social and emotional barriers to success.
I have been a tutor for the past six years and have tutored students from kindergarten to college. I specialize in science and math but am very good at English composition and writing. Each student learns and understands differently, so I prioritize teaching in a way that suits them. That philosophy can apply to their learning style but also their lifestyle. I've found that this comprehensive approach helps students feel less intimidated and allows them to build confidence as they tackle challenging material. The process of breaking down complex concepts, improving students' performance, and self-assurance is why I love tutoring.

I gained this experience working as a middle school teacher's assistant ans a an on campus peer tutor. I believe in learning by doing.
