I have a Master of Arts in Peace Education from the United Nations Mandated University for Peace (UPEACE) in Costa Rica and a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology from Marymount Manhattan College. During my time at the University for Peace, I deepened my understanding of peace theory and developed the necessary skills for being an active listener and an agent of change towards building a culture of peace, based on diversity and inclusion. Upon graduation from UPEACE, I learned Spanish, taught English to Spanish speakers, traveled and worked throughout the region and worked at an international NGO before returning back to my home in NYC seven years later.Throughout my professional career, I have found that thanks to my relevant skill set and life-long love for youth and their development, I am able to equip my students with the tools they need to succeed inside the classroom and beyond.I am compassionate, patient, have excellent active listening skills and a systems thinker.

I received my Bachelor's of Science from Marymount Manhattan College and my Master's of Science Teaching from Pace University. I have had a passion for helping others learn since college, when I would help my classmates who struggled with the material. I have taught math and science in the classroom, and worked for Kaplan Test Prep. I enjoy building relationships with students, so they trust me to help them in the best way possible.
My unique background as a professional actor and playwright in New York City along with my 6 years of experience working in classrooms grades K-8 provide me with the tools to create an engaging and focused tutoring session. I hold three Pennsylvania Instructional I Certifications (Communications [Language Arts] 7-12, Social Studies 7-12, and K-6 Elementary), a Master's Degree in Education, a BA in Theatre, and have advanced undergraduate coursework in literature and history.I believe, ultimately, all students hold the keys to their own academic achievement, it is up to me to help them unlock the door so they may accomplish any challenge that stands in their way. I will create a learning environment filled with integrity, accountability, responsibility, and fun resulting in a successful outcome for all.
I did not learn about my love for Biology and my appreciation for the sciences until my undergraduate career. After finishing my B.S. in Biology, I pursued further graduate coursework at the University of Copenhagen in Denmark. There, I studied Molecular and Human Biology. Performing research, assisting classes, and organizing seminars during graduate school inspired me to pursue a temporary job as an adjunct professor upon returning to the U.S. Teaching here in New York City has better enhanced my pedagogical skills and has taught me a great deal about the differences between group learning scenarios and one-on-one tutoring sessions. I am ever committed to better enhancing your understanding of the biological and chemical sciences.
I was one of those weird kids in school who loved taking tests. My colleagues constantly wondered at my ability to ace pop quizzes and finals alike. -- they all wondered how I could get consistent high marks without staying up all night studying. Here's a few of my strategies:-- Each test is a game, treat it like one! All games have rules. There are free points on every test that can be won by just knowing these rules!-- Study smarter, not longer. Once we know the rules, we can apply them to make our study hours more effective. Fewer hours spent cramming and better scores!-- Relax! Being anxious about your grade doesn't help you take the test. I know techniques to help manage the stress of performance anxiety, and let you perform at your best.
Hello! I'm a teacher, writer, and actor with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in theater from Marymount Manhattan College, my TESOL license, training in AP English tutoring, and research experience studying historical movements in drama and dance. My teaching experience includes my current position as an online ESL teacher; a previous TA position for a theater course, during which I edited papers and led review sessions; a position as dramaturg for a collegiate playwriting exchange between students and incarcerated individuals, which required me to provide writing support and research; a child guardian position for a 10-year-old actor, during which I assisted her in online coursework; and tutoring jobs with high school students in English and writing (two years). Furthermore, I've taught in less traditional classrooms as a dance and movement teacher for toddlers, a swim instructor for children aged 1-12, and I was a nanny for 5 years, which involved lots of homework help and academic encouragement.Additionally, I worked for two years as a local newspaper correspondent, where I wrote full-length news and editorial pieces as well as news briefs each week. Lastly, as a research assistant to my college professor, I conducted research about the history of U.S. social dance, and presented my findings in research summaries, a podcast format, and in a series of lectures to upperclassmen at the college. Through this work, I've developed an attentive editing eye, and a sense of how to guide students toward establishing cohesiveness, organization, clarity, and personal voice in their writing. The experience I hope to provide in my classroom is a compassionate challenge. I see students get so stressed and overwhelmed by all that is expected of them, especially if they feel that they are struggling with a subject or concept. This can result in "mental blocks" and even a self-defeating mentality. I aim to lift this pressure by modeling concepts in a clear manner with a lighthearted tone. I use the "I do, We do, You do" model of scaffolding to model skills, support the student in their practice, and ultimately guide them towards independence! I also utilize rewards and often try to make learning into a game. I want students to feel comfortable making mistakes with me so they are willing to engage in challenging work which stretches them to do their best.My combination of experiences in teaching, writing, childcare and theater offers a unique perspective with which I will challenge and motivate my students do their best work. I'm passionate about learning, energetic and compassionate to the individual needs of my students.
If you want to improve your test scores, come up with effective solutions for exam anxiety, and learn as much as possible, I will do everything I can to make sure you are successful in your chosen subject.I started my career as a media writer, and have been lucky to work all over the world for large and small companies, developing their brand images and creating successful projects. I began tutoring 4 years ago when I decided to become a certified ESL teacher. My experience with the English language has become a cornerstone of every learning experience. If you are studying for history, science, or language exams, a good background in basic and advanced English skills will be an asset that you use every day.I believe in working closely with each student to find out what type of learner they are, and tailoring each session to their unique abilities and challenges.I am a native New Yorker, and working in France, Spain, Sweden, and England has only increased my sense of humor and positive attitude when it comes to helping anyone achieve their goals.
