My name is Amelia I am a senior college student. I am extremely adaptable in my one-to-one/small group teaching, and will always guide students in an encouraging and kind manner

I am a current Dental Student at the University of Michigan School of Dentistry (UMSOD) and a graduate of Michigan State University (MSU). I received Bachelor of Science With a Major in Human Biology and a Minor in Entrepreneurship and Innovation. While studying at MSU, I tutored many kids on a platform called Learn To Be in subjects such as reading, writing, math, and sciences. My main passion is teaching the sciences such as Biology/Physiology/Organic Chemistry and in Math (Algebra, Geometry).
Software engineer at Ally Financial. Passionate lifelong learner with a heart of a teacher.
I'm a third-year student at Michigan State University, studying Chemical Engineering. Helping others learn is something I'm really passionate about because I know what it's like to struggle in school without much support. Over time, I've picked up some tricks that helped me understand things better, and I love sharing those with people. My experience with teaching has been great, especially when working with students who have learning disabilities. I've learned how to explain things in different ways, like talking things through, using visual aids, or breaking down why something works the way it does. These methods help me connect with students and make sure they get what they need to succeed. While I offer support across a range of subjects, my true passion lies in Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, and Mathematics. I find particular joy in tutoring Organic Chemistry, a subject often perceived as daunting. By shifting the focus from rote memorization to deep comprehension, I aim to reveal the inherent excitement and logic within Organic Chemistry, making it an engaging and enjoyable pursuit for my students. Outside of school, I enjoy reading, singing, and hanging out with friends. These things keep me balanced and happy.

Hello! I am a young professional working for an automotive company in the Ann Arbor, MI area. I have an engineering degree from Michigan State University and miss being in the classroom. I hope to get my education fix being your tutor!
I love teaching and helping others learn. I believe that everyone has their own unique learning style. As a tutor, it is my goal to help you succeed. I love animals and volunteering at the humane society.
My passion for teaching stems from a passion for learning. As class valedictorian in high school and graduating in the top of my class at Michigan State University, I take academics to great heights. One of the most important things I have learned in my life-long pursuit of education is that you not only need to have a passion for learning, but you also need the tools to help you succeed at it. I specialize in tutoring English, Reading, Literature, Photography, Photoshop, and Art. Back when I was a graduate student, I worked as a teaching assistant, where I helped instruct the history of photography courses to undergraduates. I ran classes and graded papers, and I taught my students not only to have an appreciation for art, but how to write about it as well! With every lesson I try to keep my student challenged, but not overwhelmed. I'm great at gauging where a student is, and am able to adjust accordingly. I also try to keep lessons fun, as I have found through my experience a little fun goes a long way when trying to learn! I earned my BA in English from Michigan State University, with a concentration in creative writing. I also am the proud recipient of a MFA in Photography, which is considered to be an "academic" pursuit, which involves high prowess in reading comprehension, analysis, and writing. I look forward to learning together!
Special educator with 45 years of experience K-12. Specializing in diagnostic help with reading, math, English, study skills, or literature.Director of Special Education for Jackson (MI) Catholic Schools.Personally, I am a widow with 3 grown children and one grandson.
I've always loved school and learning. At the core of my teaching philosophy is the idea that anyone can learn anything, so long as the instructor is willing to teach to the student's style of learning. Most subjects came easily to me, but I hit a wall with math in middle school and just never seemed to be able to get it to 'click.' Then, I had a very patient teacher who helped me figure out how I could learn math, and it was like the wall crashed down. I would love to see every teacher have to teach his or her worst subject for a couple of years, in order to figure out how to become a better instructor.
I knew I wanted to be a social studies teacher in 7th grade. We studied Ancient Egypt and Greece. My passion is history, especially Ancient History and I want to get students excited about the past. I earned my Ph.D. in Anthropology at Michigan State University. At MSU I was a Teaching Assistant (TA) and a professor and taught Introduction to Anthropology, Biological Anthropology, and Archaeology. I was a TA for many anthropology classes that were part of general education requirements. I earned my MA in Anthropology at the University of Oklahoma and my BA at Bloomsburg University of Pennsylvania. At Bloomsburg I was a double major in History (WWII and Russian) and Anthropology. A trip to Mexico made me realize I wanted to be an Anthropological Archaeologist. I want to teach students about the past and current cultures from around the world. With an anthropological view students gain a greater understanding of history. During the last two years, I was an English as A Second Language (ESL) instructor for 6- to 14-year-old children that live in China. I found teaching English to young students very fulfilling and lots of fun. The subjects I can tutor for are ancient and modern history, anthropology, reading, and ESL.
I am a passionate musician and educator, currently working on a Masters in Vocal Performance from DePaul University and holding a Bachelors in Music Education from Michigan State University. I have also taught and conducted middle and high school choirs while student teaching at Holt Public Schools in Michigan, along with being the Assistant Director of Music at First Presbyterian Church of Lansing. I am most passionate about tutoring subjects related to music, such as singing, basic ukulele, and basic piano, along with music theory, history, appreciation, composing, and arranging.
As a passionate educator with a Master's degree in Applied Mathematics from Michigan Technological University, I bring over 25 years of tutoring and classroom experience in subjects ranging from Pre-Algebra to AP Calculus AB. My teaching philosophy centers on creating a supportive learning environment that fosters curiosity and confidence in my students. I strive to connect mathematical concepts to real-world applications, making learning relevant and engaging. I am dedicated to helping each student achieve their academic goals, and I find joy in witnessing their growth and success.

I received my PhD and Masters from Ohio State University and my Bachelors from Michigan State University all in mathematics. I have worked as a professor for 14 years teaching across the standard undergraduate mathematics curriculum. I am passionate about helping people learn math and really love to help them make connections between topics and help them to succeed in their studies.
Learning is meant to be enjoyed. Young minds are sponges waiting to be filled with knowledge and understanding. It feels good to learn, to grow, to develop. If a student can enjoy and connect with what he or she is learning, intellectual growth and development will be solidified that much more and further learning will be welcomed and sought after. This is my mission as a tutor at Varsity Tutors. To connect the material to each student I tutor on a personal level through visual representation and personally applicable examples. This will lead to a better understanding of what he or she is learning and will allow the student to build a foundation for further learning outside of my sessions.Along with my mission, I bring with me my experience as a YMCA camp counselor. I spent summer 2012 guiding and leading 10-15 children, ages 5-12, at summer day camp while finishing my final two courses to complete my Economics degree at Michigan State University. Throughout the summer, I successfully maintained a supportive and nourishing relationship with all campers to ensure each of them walked away with a positive experience, new friendships, and a smile. I currently work in asset management here in Chicago. I enjoy skiing, hiking, biking, and traveling in my free time.
I just joined the Varsity Tutors team as a German tutor. I completed my BA in German and English after taking German for four years in high school, during which I traveled to Bavaria twice as an exchange student. I then went on to complete my MA in German Studies at Michigan State University. In 2009, I became certified to teach German and English at the secondary level.I have been a tutor since my acceptance into the National Honor Society in high school. I have tutored at Alma College and have worked as a teaching assistant at Michigan State, where I helped design assessments as well as teaching at the beginner and intermediate levels.German has been a favorite subject of mine because of my personal connection to the language and culture. I enjoy using games and communicative activities as much as possible to make German interesting and fun to learn. Outside of academia, I enjoy reading, writing and film. I will look forward to working with you.

I possess a current professional teaching license from the Florida Department of Education in K-12 Reading, K-12 ESOL/ESL, and K-6 Elementary Education, and my teaching specialties are English, reading comprehension, and writing including SAT and ACT preparation. I taught grades 7-12 for 12 years in Florida using Achieve 3000 for the FCAT reading assessment and Read 180 for struggling readers. I use online fiction and nonfiction articles, SAT and TOEFL exam preparation booklets, and various websites which allow me to teach reading, comprehension, writing, and speaking better to my students. I also taught elementary school, all subjects, overseas for four years in the Middle East and Germany. I currently tutor several Chinese students online in English speaking, reading, and writing and also adults in conversational English at the beginning, intermediate, and advanced levels. I hope to work with you soon! Thank you for reading and best wishes. Regards, Maria
I am a recent graduate of Michigan State University where I received my Bachelor of Arts in Mathematics along with a Bachelor of Music in Jazz Studies. Throughout my work as a tutor I have enjoyed helping students and peers one on one. I always love a good aha! moment where I can really tell that the subject matter is clicking. I take personal pride in watching my students learn. Most of my experience is in tutoring for high school and college level math and music. I also have experience assisting with high school Spanish. When I teach I try to help students fully understand the concepts and logic behind subjects. This way they not only can apply them on a test but they learn useful skills and ways to think and learn. I love learning as well as teaching and look to gain much experience from working with you. In my free time I listen to and play music, shoot hoops, practice yoga, and enjoy time outside hiking and such.
I am passionate about helping you learn and become your best self. I have worked with students in the past and thoroughly enjoyed meeting all of them and, I hope, they enjoyed working with me as well! I can tutor anything in math and coding as well. I am currently a bachelor's student at Michigan State University studying Computational Data Science. I love helping people, so I know I will make sure every answer you have is answered and understood. I will support you to the end!
In all of my capacities as an educator and tutorwhich range from lecturing at the University of Michigan to instructing summer courses on college-application essays to tutoring elementary students as a Peace Corps volunteer in ThailandI continue to see the power of critical thinking when fueled by curiosity. I believe that this coupling of curiosityor "inquiry," as some of us call itand textual analysis can change the world. Being able to think critically about who we are, what we believe, and why we believe it given our personal contexts allows us to enter into new, exciting spaces where we can really, tangibly, impact our culture. Guiding this process is my passion.I will be starting my PhD (Media Studies) this Fall at Northwestern University and look to continue tutoring throughout my studies. Although that will place me in Chicago, I'm a Michigander at heart, having lived most of my life in mid-Michigan. I received my B.A. (Journalism) at Michigan State University; I taught college composition at the University of Michigan and Eastern Michigan University; and nothing makes me happier than strapping up my kayaks and exploring the state's rivers and lakes. I am confident in my ability to help students with any situation where they are trying to convey a purpose to an audiencebe it in the form of ACT/GRE prompts, college-application essays, textual analyses, newspaper articles, or just basic essay editing.I also have two years of experience teaching ESL from my time in Thailand. :)
I graduated with honors from Michigan State University in 2006, receiving a BA in History with cognates in Math and Physics. I had the opportunity to travel extensively through western Europe as an undergraduate student, and I participated in a semester-long study abroad program in the United Kingdom. These experiences led me to pursue graduate studies abroad in Ireland, and I received my MA in History from University College, Cork in 2007. While preparing my applications to doctoral programs in the U.S. and Canada, I had the opportunity to work as a long-term substitute teacher, teaching Algebra at an alternative high school in Flint, MI. In the summer of 2008 I was asked by the same high school to stay on for their summer school program, where I taught 6-8th grade math. I took up a graduate scholarship with the Department of History at the University of Toronto the next autumn. I passed my comprehensive exams on schedule in May of 2010, and began the long, arduous, but rewarding process of researching for my dissertation. I have taught at both the secondary and college levels, and I have taught a variety of subjects and skills from math to history, and from critical reading and writing to the basics of footnoting and compiling bibliographies . These teaching opportunities have provided me with considerable experience in planning, organizing and presenting educational programming. They have also given me the opportunity to guide, and to work closely with young scholars and learners from a variety of backgrounds. I firmly believe that the importance of education as well as the key to a successful academic career is the ability to learn 'how to learn'. In other words, rather than simply memorizing and demonstrating content, I believe that recognizing and mastering one's own unique process(es) of learning is the most important outcome of learning. For this reason, I try not only to present learning as a challenging but fun exercise, but also as an exploration of each student's strengths, interests and capabilities. Apart from my continued fascination with all things 'history', I enjoy reading (especially satire), traveling (especially on trains), and watching (but never performing!) stand-up comedy.
I tutor Elementary through Middle School including adult literacy. Subjects include: reading, comprehension, vocabulary, spelling, math, states and capitols and more! My presentations are high energy lessons utilizing math games and puzzles, computer software and visuals. I have been a tutor since 1987 and have volunteered 1000s of hours at area schools. My students may use a low powered FM station to write their own radio show. This entices them to read/write and be creative
I like helping students. I am very patient. I have experience teaching Calculus classes at the University of Miami. I have done private tutoring for all levels of math up to Calculus, as well as Statistics, Business Math, and Math Finance. I have worked in the actuarial field. I have an undergraduate degree in mathematics from Michigan State University and a Master's degree in mathematics from the University of Miami. I worked for The Princeton Review as a tutor for the SAT. I did very well on both the SAT and ACT, and like teaching students how to do better on those. I like history, too, and always find it fun to tutor history.
Hi! I'm a recent grad with a B.S. in Genetics, an upcoming PhD student, and have around 2 years of teaching experience in the classroom. Sessions with me will be specialized to what YOU need to learn for the scope of YOUR class. By utilizing application based questions and active recall, I help you succeed in mainly biology-related courses. I am always open to improving my tutoring skillsets, so I am very open-minded and flexible if you want to try a new strategy I haven't used before, too :)
I help people reach their education goals. Having worked for the math departments of two different colleges and one-on-one with trauma rehabilitation patients, I can help with Mathematics, English, study skills, learning confidence, Humanities, and more. I look forward to working with you!
I have a BA in English from Michigan State University and a MA in Broadcast and Cinematic Arts from Central Michigan University. I also completed 4 years of doctoral studies in American Culture Studies (an inter-disciplinary field that encompasses Film, American History, Sociology, and English) at Bowling Green State University, in Ohio.I have taught courses both online and in traditional classroom settings. Those courses included Film, American Culture Studies, Speech Communication (which includes Public Speaking), and Popular Culture. Currently, I am an instructor for the Art Institutes. I have been with them for 7 years. In addition to my current teaching duties, I also give lectures in Art History. My research interests include Medical Sociology, Comparative Religion, Video Games, and Narratology.I am passionate about teaching because I think learning is important. Education is important. I like to see students learning, because I know how good it feels when you learn something for the first time, or when you finally make a breakthrough in something you have been working hard to achieve. Your mind opens. Your world expands. New horizons await. Learning does that. Education does that. Now, more than ever, you need to make opportunities for yourself, to grow, to advance, to achieve. I am honored to help students start down a path toward making those opportunities happen.I am qualified to tutor a broad range of subjects, but I most excited about helping students improve their overall abilities in all facets of English (including Literature), Art, and Social Studies. That does not mean you need to be majoring in those areas. If you are taking a course in one of those areas, whatever your major might be, I want to help you.My approach to teaching is in guiding students toward realizations. I enjoy interacting with students, creating a dialog, helping them come to their own conclusions, rather than simply giving them the conclusions. My style is informal, but focused. Learning should be engaging, not boring. Some of the best professors I had over the years were in courses outside my majors. Even though I had little interest in the subject matter, they made the material engaging, and I learned a lot.Outside of academic pursuits, I do a lot of weight-lifting, and I enjoy being outdoors. I do study popular culture, so my hobbies and research interests are the same. I am a gamer. I also collect books of all kinds (and comic books), and I do a lot of writing. Also, huge Doctor Who fan.

As a math tutor, my ultimate goal is to inspire my students to develop a similar enthusiasm for the subject.Over the years, I have worked with students of various ages, backgrounds, and skill levels. Each student is unique, and I firmly believe in tailoring my teaching approach to meet their individual needs. I strive to create a supportive and engaging learning environment, where students feel comfortable asking questions, expressing their challenges, and exploring mathematical concepts at their own pace.My teaching philosophy centers around the idea of making math accessible and relatable. I utilize real-life examples and practical applications to demonstrate the relevance of math in everyday situations, making it easier for students to grasp abstract concepts. As a tutor, I aim to instill not only a deep understanding of mathematical concepts but also strong problem-solving and critical-thinking skills. I encourage my students to approach problems from different angles, think creatively, and develop logical reasoning abilities. By emphasizing the process of problem-solving rather than mere memorization, I empower my students to become independent thinkers and confident mathematicians.Communication is at the heart of my tutoring style. I believe in establishing open and effective lines of communication with my students and their parents. I first gained a love for tutoring while being a teaching assistant in college. I then became a tutor for the athletics department for physics, math, and economics. Most of my previous experience is with college students, but I'd love to tutor all ages. I enjoy helping students gain confidence in their material whether that be through test prep or homework review!
I am a doctoral student in linguistic anthropology at Michigan State University, where I previously received two bachelor's degrees in professional writing and comparative cultures and politics with a minor in Spanish. After graduating, I worked as a behavior aide in an elementary school helping students in need of extra behavioral support in the classroom and in social situations. The following year, I was a long-term substitute Spanish teacher for grades pre-K through 8th, where I gained experience developing lesson plans for exploratory Spanish all the way up to students receiving high school credit for Spanish 1.I am eager to tutor because I absolutely love both teaching and being a student myself. For that reason, I enjoy tutoring a wide range of topics and getting to learn new things as I engage in the material I'm working on with students. While I am most passionate about topics in the social sciences and humanities, I also love math and am proficient in Spanish. I love working with students of all ages and helping support students as they navigate coursework, tests, and essays.
I am very excited to be a part of Varsity Tutors because it is my belief that everyone has the capability to succeed in school, even if they need a little extra help to get there. Quality education is absolutely essential in making sure a child is prepared for their future career. I love working with students and seeing them triumph over areas they were once struggling with.
I'm a current student at Michigan State University studying Human Biology. I am apart of MSU's Osteopathic Medical Scholars Program with hopes of becoming a D.O. physician in the future. I have tutored all throughout my life, whether it be my neighbors or family friends. I truly enjoy helping others learn more about subjects that will continue to help them in future pursuits.
I graduated from Michigan State University with a Bachelors of Science in Environmental Biology/Microbiology and a minor in Spanish. My tutoring experience began in college, where I tutored Student-Athletes in many different subjects. I also student taught and provided tutoring sessions for a biology course. These positions taught me how gratifying and fun it is to interact with others in the learning process! After graduation, I spent a year traveling and volunteering internationally, immersing myself in a variety of cultures. Currently, I am a full-time AmeriCorps member, where I serve in a charter school tutoring 5th - 8th grade students in mathematics. I enjoy engaging with students in all subjects, from algebra to Spanish to writing. When I'm not involved in educational activities, I like to hike, teach my dog new tricks, play Scrabble, and practice yoga.
My passion is rooted in writing education, specifically for high school juniors and seniors as well as first-year college students. My teaching philosophy is student-centered and encourages student writers to focus on what makes their writing unique to them. Working one-on-one with students, we search for the "why" in writing assignments and try to understand the purpose of instruction, both in and out of school. This understanding improves comprehension skills and overall writing habits.
Hello Varsity Tutors students! My name is Darius Amos, but I go by DJ. I am a fourth-year medical student graduating this April with my doctoral degree, and I earned my Bachelor of Science in Biology from the University of Mississippi. I genuinely enjoy teaching and mentoring and have spent a lot of time helping students understand challenging concepts by breaking them down step by step and adapting my approach to each student's learning style. My experience includes serving as an undergraduate biology mentor for biology majors, working as a biology lab teaching assistant, and tutoring during medical school in histology and musculoskeletal (MSK) courses. I'm patient, encouraging, and focused on helping students not just get the right answer, but truly understand the material.
I discovered the joy of teaching and helping others when I was in school and working with classmates on the same material. I've found that the material is only part of the learning process. Attending the same classes allowed me to understand the classroom context and help classmates navigate confusing lessons as well as homework and exams. I have successfully taken on this role from elementary to graduate school. Most of the time I did not have an official position as a tutor, but I greatly enjoyed being in an optimal position to set up others for success.I most enjoy math, probability, and statistics because they give you tools that allow you to solve technical problems all by yourself. For example, I build a tool in Excel to give me the odds that I would get a desired card from a card pool in the online card game called Hearthstone. I graduated Michigan State with a bachelor's in statistics and a Master's in Business Analytics to learn how to apply statistics to real world problems.I have had almost all A's throughout my entire academic career. I attribute my success to more than natural ability. I've found that being willing to ask questions to classmates and teachers, putting more time and effort into subjects and lessons that are most challenging, treating each class/teacher as a separate challenge, and breaking down processes are all incredibly important. I think of a new class as a separate game that needs to be understood and respected. Having this flexibility will enable you to take the key steps that will optimize your performance. When I consider artistic performance such as my piano playing and dancing, I see how breaking it down is helpful in a similar way. I have to spend most of the time working on the hard parts and then integrating them into the rest of the piece. In school, the performance could be solving an algebraic equation. There could be an element like factoring that is hard and open ended. Putting the most time and effort into factoring and then successfully working through the whole problem is just like perfect practice leading to a flawless performance.
I taught at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln (UNL).I will bring to my tutoring responsibilities a sensibility shaped by nineteen years of teaching diverse communities of students across the worldmostly in the US, but also in India. My responsibilities in my most recent position have included supervision of teaching internships, help with student placement, oversight of undergraduate grant-funded research, and advising English majors and minors. Nominated by students, I won UNL Parents Association's "Certificate of Recognition for Contributions to Students." As a graduate student at Michigan State University, I won the Excellence in Teaching Award given to only six teaching assistants annually. I was nominated by the Department of Writing, Rhetoric, and American Cultures where I taught.I owe much of my success in effectively teaching across a large arc of English studies to the seriousness with which I take my student evaluations. Over the years I have consistently adapted my classes to meet the needs of the student body by sometimes even revamping whole courses. For years I have been invested in the philosophy of human potential and how to create optimum conditions for best performance, and will bring that same philosophy to tutoring. One of the main objectives that I will bring to my tutoring responsibilities is creating conditions that will sustain the motivation of my students to bring out their true potential through their performance irrespective of their prior preparation. This is particularly important students will come in with different levels of preparation for the courses that I will tutor. Creating an open environment where the inexperienced student can also express her understanding of the material fearlessly so that the instructor can turn such opportunities into tutoring and learning moments by drawing on her remarks and expanding beyond them fosters a more inclusive environment. This instills confidence in students and enhances confidence and self-directed learning and their overall ability to perform. Such a pedagogy makes it easier for students to handle the intellectual demands of the new kinds of material.
