Hello! My name is Sam Smith. I grew in Glendale, California, and attended Glendale public schools from kindergarten to twelfth grade. I have been particularly passionate about history and politics in my academic career. I had very strong reading and writing skills as a student, which is a talent I brought to my work as a tutor in high school. I have a Bachelor's degree in political science, which I received with honors in 2010. Although I focused primarily on political science, I also took advanced courses in mathematics including calculus, statistics, and econometrics. I obtained a single subject teaching credential from Cal State Northridge in 2017. I have over two years of in-classroom teaching experience. I am capable of teaching most common primary and secondary classes including but not limited to: English, History, Mathematics, Government, and Economics. I believe in personalized educational support tailored to a student's particular needs. I enjoy working collaboratively with students to meet their goals--taking advantage of their academic strengths and improving their areas of growth. My classroom teaching experience allows me to use proven teaching techniques beyond typical tutoring. Teacher preparation programs focus on using teaching techniques to meet students at their current level of understanding and steadily increasing their knowledge from there.

I have a Master's in English as well as a B.A. in Writing and a B.A. in Media Studies. I also hold a California Teaching Credential and have taught gifted and talented students (GATE) for 7 years in the California public school system. I was an English professor for 2 years at Westwood College and I currently work full-time as an online ESL Teacher for VIPKid. I also tutored SAT prep, PSAT prep, AP English, Honors English, Writing, Grammar, ACT English, TOEFL, CBEST and CSET as well as general homework help for grades Kindergarten through College. I graduated from Pitzer College with an honors degree in Philosophy and a minor in History. Currently, I'm applying for MAT programs and aspire to be a high school Literature and Social Studies teacher. In 2014, I spent more than 2,000 hours teaching English to Korean students. This experience showed me not only that I love teaching, but also how to work with students to achieve their goals. I tutor students in English, TOEFL preparation, SAT Verbal and Critical Reading preparation, and essay writing. My favorite subject to teach is English, because I love watching someone progress from knowing just a few words of a language to speaking it with confidence. When I tutor, I focus on presenting information to students as clearly as possible so that they can apply it to assignments after our lesson. Further, I strive to understand each individual student's learning style and tailor my lessons accordingly. Outside of helping students achieve academic success, I love to play all kinds of sports, spend time hiking, skiing, fishing and backpacking in Oregon's beautiful wilderness, learn languages and play the guitar.

College has cultivated my sense for education and learning. Last spring, during my sophomore year at Pitzer College, I declared a double major in mathematics and biophysics. I am taking this year off of college, and wish to share what I have learned with others.

I graduated with honors from Pitzer College in May of 2014. I obtained a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology with a focus in child development. I am currently a middle school teacher in West Phoenix, where I teach 7/8th grade special education in a resource room setting. I teach various ability levels in the subject areas of writing, math, and reading. I have also worked as an art teacher through Explorations Summer Academy and taught 6th grade English at a summer school.My tutoring experience includes: tutoring African refugees living in Oregon, tutoring children in Ecuador, teaching preschool as an AmeriCorps member in a low-income community in California, and tutoring children living with their families in Bolivian prisons. Some fun facts about me are that I played varsity lacrosse in college and am highly proficient in Spanish. In my spare time, I paint murals and attend Zumba classes.

I have experience with working with high school and community college student on both coasts. I worked with Johns Hopkins for Center for Talented Youth at the Princeton University field site as a TA for their Science, Technology, and Public Policy. I found I really enjoy teaching high school students.As an instructor, I am interested in a hands-off, yet present in the middle of the process approach. For writing, this means I don't write your paper for you, and you are the first one to edit your papers. I want to teach you how to approach your writing and editing, rather than doing it for you.If you are a high school student looking to go to college and want to blow away the admissions committee, start NOW on developing your writing skills. Writing is a fundamental skill wherever you think of going professionally.My degrees are in interdisciplinary social science and can help with tackling anthropology and sociology.

I am excited to tutor biology, chemistry (general and organic), and subjects at their interface. I received my bachelor's degree in biochemistry from Pitzer College in spring 2020. While at Pitzer, I worked as an organic chemistry lab teaching assistant for two years, supporting students as they learned numerous techniques in the lab and completed worksheets during my office hours. As a tutor, I prefer to emphasize general principles over memorizing lots of details; I believe that students gain deeper understanding of the material when they are the ones to draw connections and solve problems. Different explanations make sense to different people, so I am happy to use literal and technical language, analogies, or a combination thereof to explain scientific concepts. I know firsthand that studying science can feel daunting, but it can also be incredibly fun. My goal is to provide high-quality instruction and unconditional encouragement so that every student can thrive as a scientist.
