My own experiences taught me the influence that an educator can have on a budding reader. As a high school freshmen, I was more interested in the cracks in the ceiling than any books being discussed. But one educator took a personal interest in me, and introduced me to Joseph Heller's letters. The humor pulled me in, and the insight kept me going. I was struck by a writer's power to put the world in sharp, sane relief.I pursued my newfound interest to a Bachelor's Degree in English at Princeton, and my current pursuit of a fiction MFA at Columbia University. On the professional front, I have served editorial roles at Standard & Poor's, Encore Magazine, and Untitled. These experiences taught me the key role that written communication plays outside of academia, and the universal value of sharpening that skill.I believe that patience and empathy are essential to teaching. An educator needs the ability to understand the myriad difficulties faced by students, and the frustration that can come with it. Only then can they help students move forward.

I am a current student at Princeton University, obtaining a major in English with minors in Environmental Studies and Musical Theater. I graduated from Sewickley Academy in 2016 as a member of the Cum Laude Society with highest honors for all semesters. I am an AP Scholar with Honors, an Academic All American, and a recipient of the Harvard Book Award. When on breaks from school, I take care of children ages 5-11 and teach them reading, writing, and mathematics. Though I enjoy teaching a wide range of subjects, I am most passionate about English. I have the most fun teaching students reading, writing, and grammar for test preparation and general school help. I believe that the ability to read and write proficiently is a foundation for a well-rounded individual and allows the student to have the best chances in any academic or employment field they may pursue. To be able to express oneself eloquently and concisely is essential for academic and personal success. This does not come without skill in logical mathematic thinking, however. I firmly believe that anyone can succeed no matter where they are in the educative process as long as they have the tools and strategies for efficient learning. The best advise any teacher gave me was "study smarter, not harder". There are strategies that take time to learn, but once mastered, studying and preparing for any academic venture become much easier. In my free time, I enjoy participating in musical theater, golfing, reading, and yoga.

4+ Years Tutoring

Hello! I'm Germaine and I am passionate about supporting and empowering students to achieve their academic goals. Over the last five years, I've had the opportunity to help hundreds of students succeed on various standardized tests, research papers, course finals and more across a range of disciplines. Two years ago, I transitioned entirely to ACT, SAT, and LSAT prep where I began focusing on tutoring students in a 1-on-1 setting, and it was here that I discovered my enthusiasm for helping students navigate the nuanced layers of these exams. My love for tutoring comes from the fun of simplifying complex concepts into smaller, more easily accessible units. By cutting down large problems into their constituent parts, any student can become a faster and more efficient problem solver - it's amazing what one can accomplish by employing these effective techniques! My goal as a tutor is to effectively impart these formulas to my students and equip them with the knowledge and confidence to approach any academic challenge that comes their way. After receiving my Bachelors in Philosophy from Princeton University, I moved to the Boston area where my true passion remains teaching and tutoring. Much of my time is spent working with my students, volunteering as a math tutor for disadvantaged schools, and exploring new methods and practices for improving my teaching skill. Experience teaching a variety of subjects and ages has also imbued me with a knack for creativity in coming up with individual lesson plans tailored to fit each unique student. Depending on their particular needs, background, and learning style, I come up with creative solutions to make the material relevant and engaging. Whether through analogies, drawn explanations, or useful anecdotes, I strive to create material that inspires a passion for the subject matter in each student. If you're looking for an experienced tutor who is dedicated to helping students reach their full potential, then feel free to contact me!

My love for relationships and my desire to help the less fortunate or struggling beautifully melded together when I had the chance to take up tutoring in my sophomore year of high school. My most memorable tutoring experience consisted of working with an ESL student who was struggling with writing and English. Although I encountered obstacles in my teaching, I was constantly motivated by the fact that I could use my education, especially in areas that I am greatly passionate about (writing and literature), to help this student gain confidence in her learning abilities and get to a point where, instead of being discouraged, she could actually enjoy learning. I especially loved the moments when she reached a breakthrough in her understanding of a concept and was so happy that I had been able to use my knowledge to enhance her understanding and enjoyment of a topic. I tutored through out high school and continue to tutor in college as I help other students to realize their potential and achieve their goals.Beyond tutoring, I enjoy hanging out with friends, mentoring, going for runs, and playing music (I play guitar, piano, and am currently learning cello). I also love to read making my life as an English major quite enjoyable and one of my greatest delights is seeing a neat pile of the five different books I'm trying to read simultaneously all stacked up on my desk. I look forward to the great privilege of working with students and getting to know them both academically and personally!

I started tutoring because I love math and I believe that everyone can learn to feel the same. Mathematics is ubiquitous in our world and contains profound truths that every human being should be able to understand and appreciate. Students who "hate" math seldom truly do; often only a past bad experience has ruined the subject for them. From there, I branched out to the sciences and things only became more fun.In all my tutoring, I strive to emphasize the underlying beauty of the subject. I find that enthusiasm is infectious and is the best answer to precipitously dropping grades. I believe that building confidence and deep conceptual understanding, as well as fostering a rich and mentor-like relationship between tutor and student, is the most enjoyable and most rewarding way to teach; in fact I would like to pursue a career as a professor of physics!

Frequently Asked Questions

Tutors who attended or graduated from Princeton University bring deep expertise and firsthand experience navigating rigorous coursework. They understand the academic rigor required at top institutions and can teach not just content, but the problem-solving approaches and study strategies that helped them succeed at an elite level. Their Princeton education means they've mastered foundational concepts thoroughly and can explain complex material with clarity that comes from having truly grasped it themselves.

Tutors with Princeton backgrounds excel across STEM fields—mathematics, physics, chemistry, and computer science—as well as humanities subjects like English, history, and foreign languages. Many also bring expertise in standardized test preparation (SAT, ACT, AP exams) since they've navigated these assessments themselves. Their Princeton training ensures they can teach advanced concepts in nearly any subject, from organic chemistry to literary analysis, with both accuracy and insight.

Tutors who graduated from Princeton understand what selective colleges look for—not just strong grades, but genuine mastery of material and intellectual curiosity. They can help students develop the analytical thinking and communication skills that distinguish strong college applicants. Additionally, they bring authentic perspective on the college application process itself, including standardized testing strategies, essay writing, and how to demonstrate readiness for rigorous coursework.

Personalized 1-on-1 instruction with a Princeton-educated tutor means you're learning from someone who has already solved the problems you're facing. They can identify knowledge gaps quickly, explain why concepts matter, and adapt their teaching based on your learning style in real-time. This level of customization—combined with expertise from an Ivy League education—creates a learning experience tailored specifically to your goals, whether that's mastering calculus or preparing for AP exams.

Varsity Tutors connects you with expert tutors based on your specific needs—whether you're looking for someone with a Princeton background, expertise in a particular subject, or familiarity with certain standardized tests.
