I am a graduate of the University of California, Berkeley and Duke University. I received my Bachelor's degree in History and my Master's degree in Religious Studies. Since graduation I have tutored students in American History and Biblical Hebrew, which were exceedingly rewarding experiences. I'm a Ph.D. candidate in the English Dept. at UC Berkeley back in NYC to finish my dissertation. Over the past few years, I've taught students at a wide range of levels including: College literature and composition classes at UC Berkeley, Middle school writing classes, High School Essay Writing and SAT Test Prep classes, SAT/PSAT tutoring, and High school tutoring (English and History).I'm fluent in French and studied at the Sorbonne in Paris for a year during my previous life as a Historian. When I'm not tutoring or working on my dissertation, I do some freelance writing. It's a cliche to say that my writing informs my teaching while my teaching improves my writing, but it's also true: the constant effort to improve my own work helps me to understand what my students are going through, while my work as a teacher and tutor gives me a fresh perspective on my writing. I always stress that writing is rewriting. One of my happiest moments as a teacher was when one of my students won the UC Berkeley English Department's annual Essay Prize last spring with a paper I helped her to revise.In terms of test prep, I aim for a balance between tricks (outsmarting the test) and skill development (boosting a student's reading comprehension, vocabulary, etc.). I used to be skeptical about test strategies; I got a perfect verbal score on my own SAT and consistently scored in the 99th percentile on the verbal section of every standardized test I ever took without resorting to any kind of special technique. However, as I've worked as a tutor, I've come to realize just how *many* of those tests I took for practice before I took the real thing. By the time I sat down to the real SAT, I'd been steeped in test-prep culture for years. Even if I didn't intentionally set out to attack the test with "tricks," those tricks were embedded in my subconscious. Now, when I work with students to prepare for tests, I try to make sure they have the same level of preparation and comfort that I had as well as the skills to succeed.

I earned a master's degree in physics at UC Berkeley and two bachelor's degrees in physics and mathematics at Penn State. I taught university physics courses and community college mathematics courses. I have tutored both physics and mathematics for the last three decades. And I enjoy the heck out of teaching. I believe that general problem-solving skills are more valuable than content knowledge. To develop good physical intuition and problem-solving skills, one needs to practice regularly, just like learning a language. There is no shortcut. Learning activities are based on experience, which involves making errors and reflecting on them. Whether I teach a class or tutor a student individually, I always stress that every problem-solving step has a rationale. If the student makes a mistake, but can justify their approach, then we can fix both the mistake and the logic, and the student will benefit from their error. However, if the student makes a mistake, but cannot articulate their thought process, they will not learn anything.

I studied computer science and statistics in college. Since late high school I have had a regular teaching commitment, whether it was helping younger students prepare for standardized tests or TA'ing for college courses. I love grammar, writing, and linguistics - and I believe effective communication, both written and oral, is a vital skill necessary to succeed in any academic field. However, though my specialty is English, I have also taught SAT/ACT math and ACT science. My primary teaching method focuses on relating to each student on a personal level to gauge the kind of learner he or she is. Then I will adapt accordingly. Knowing my student on a personal level also allows me to incorporate analogies relatable to the student's interests to enhance motivation and learning. However, one thing is consistent: my students will learn not only the underlying academic concepts for the SAT and ACT but also test-taking and time management strategies. If you want a one-stop shop for help on both standardized tests and college admissions, I am your man. Personally, in my free time, I love playing video games, watching movies and anime, and solving puzzles. I also love mentoring youth. There's just something about seeing the proverbial "light bulb" illuminate in a kid's mind that just makes my job satisfying!

I graduated with a BA from UC Berkeley in 2020 as a double major in Astrophysics and Classical Civilizations. My main areas of interest in those studies were planetary science and Greek-language literature, respectively. I'm passionate about both STEM subjects and the humanities, and love helping students translate their strengths in one area to another.I tutor in a broad range of subjects, but would especially love to help you learn more about Latin, English, and astronomy, because those were my favorite subjects in school. I'd also love to help you with prepping for any section of the ACT or SAT, because I remember how stressful those tests were, and want to help you feel as confident and calm as you can while you get ready for them.

I am committed to giving students the best skill set they can possibly attain. I derive satisfaction from mentoring young adults and love to see it when my students "get it." My goal is to instill in my clients a love for tough subjects and set them on a path of academic success.I have experience in the California public school system as a long-term 10th grade English substitute teacher, and have taught middle school and high school level history in this capacity. Having passed multiple A.P. exams and attained a bachelor's degree in history from the University of California at Berkeley, I wish to engage the prospective college student with learning methodologies that aided me along the way. Some examples would be:1. Crafting cohesive and structured essays, with emphasis on paragraph cohesion, thesis statements, and word choice.2. Analyzing historical contexts and themes, so that the student will grasp the "big picture" while also answering specific questions pertaining to names, dates and important moments along the timeline.Currently, I publish original research for the Terrorism Research and Analysis Consortium, (TRAC) hold a M.A. in Nonproliferation and Terrorism Studies from the Monterey Institute of International Studies.I look forward to helping students succeed at school as a Varsity Tutor!

I received my first degree (B.A.) in mathematics at UC Berkeley, where I fell in love with the beauty and logic of math. Later I went on to complete a master's degree in mathematics at Portland State University, where I was teaching Pre-Calculus as well as a fun class called 'Excursions in Mathematics.' The Excursions class was especially meant for liberal arts students who struggled with traditional math classes but still needed to fulfill a math requirement to graduate. After I finished my master's degree I moved to Finland to do a Ph.D. in mathematics. I was always fascinated with Scandinavia and Nordic culture, so I decided to go there to study. I lived in Finland for 5 years and completed my doctorate in a field called Geometric Function Theory. Although it wasn't required for my studies, I learned the Finnish language while I was there. Finland is a wonderful country, and I will always cherish my time spent and the people I met there. I moved back to the USA after finishing my PhD, and I was hired as a Visiting Assistant Professor at the University of Hawaii Department of Mathematics. My position included both teaching and research responsibilities. I was teaching all levels of mathematics, including single- and multi-variable calculus, linear algebra, differential equations, advanced undergraduate analysis as well as graduate courses. While I love math and teaching, I found that working working full-time at a university is not for me. The heavy teaching loads and constant pressure to publish research results left me run down and exhausted, and that's not how I want to live and work. I want to enjoy teaching and working on research while also having time to be a person and enjoy life. I recently moved to pursue other interests, while I continue to teach mathematics and work on research in my own time.

I received my Bachelor of Arts in Integrative Biology from the University of California, Berkeley where I focused on ecology and evolutionary biology. As an undergraduate, I had the chance to serve in two teaching positions on campus. In the first course, I assisted graduate students and professors to guide a class through core level biology. The second was a hands-on affair, in which I led students through the preparation of animal specimens for preservation in a museum. Through my experiences, I have discovered that the best way to learn and teach a subject is to tackle it with a variety of approaches. For example, students intimidated by the technical jargon of math often find problems easier to understand when symbols are replaced with words. Through such strategies, I aim to make dense material more communicable and relatable and to provide students with the confidence to accept new challenges. I am most excited to discuss ecology, evolution, and math, but I am also able to tutor subjects such as physics, writing, and standardized testing. In my free time, I enjoy playing video games, practicing martial arts, and hiking.
