I am originally from South San Francisco, California. Shortly after obtaining my bachelor's degree in Biomedical Engineering from University of California, Riverside, I worked as a manufacturing specialist with the world's leading pharmaceutical company. I spent some time there understanding how I wanted to use the experience and my education to promote public health and medical technology. Such questioning led me to Boston. I am currently pursuing my master's in Regulatory Affairs at Northeastern University in hopes of developing breakthrough medical technology with quality, safety, and effectiveness. My tutoring experiences range from formal/professional sessions with clients to informal meetings with classmates. I worked as a pre-calculus tutor for one year. I have participated in many after-school recreation programs which included tutoring a large variety of subjects. During my undergraduate studies, I would typically hold informal classes on subjects I strongly understood with friends and colleagues. Lastly, I spent one summer teaching the basics of engineering to elementary and middle school student via hands-on projects, using real-life tools.I love to teach math (up through Calculus) and science (Biochemistry, Biology) because it is challenging. I noticed most students have a hard time with STEM subjects. However, I believe that everything is possible. I feel that the mastery of a subject is dependent on how it was presented and the limitations you have placed on yourself. My teaching style varies with the student. I like to use many examples, pictures, videos, and funny stories that can help the student apply the concept to in-life situations. I believe when the subject is placed in perspective, there is much more understanding. When I am not interpreting legislations and reading about breakthrough medical devices, I enjoy the outdoors. I love to spend time relaxing on the beach, take light hikes, and long bike rides. When I am indoors, I enjoy watching full seasons (using in one day) of the latest shows. I spend most of my free time catching up with friends, sleeping, and taking it one day at a time.

I received my PhD in developmental psychology from the University of California, Riverside. I received my bachelor???s degree in psychology and religious studies from Boston University. I tutor individuals in psychology and GRE prep. I have taught undergraduate classes in Intro Psychology, Developmental Psychology, and Statistics. I have also spent 6 years as a teaching assistant for many undergraduate classes in psychology. When teaching and tutoring students, I focus on conversation, allowing the students the opportunity to truly understand the material and internalize it through a back and forth. While I expect my students to be prepared, I do not expect them to learn on their own. The purpose of tutoring is to come to an understanding of the material together.
I graduated from the University of California, Riverside with a Bachelor's in Japanese and also received an Associate's of Arts in English from Crafton Hills College. I help as a substitute teacher and teacher assistant at my local Japanese Language School to help with teaching students of all ages in Japanese. In addition, I have earned a teaching certificate (TEFL). This was a 120-hour course which included a course on teaching English as a foreign language and it's structure. While it was specifically for teaching ESL, the bulk of the course focused on the methodology I would need to work as a language teacher in general. I also have taken the Kanji Kentei before (the native Japanese Kanji test) at the Japanese school I volunteer at in my city. I have experience teaching children, teens, and adults. I love to use lots of visuals and colors in my materials! I'm passionate about Japanese and have been practicing Japanese for 9 years now.
I am passionate about helping students of all ages learn challenging content. I am a National Board Certified teacher with more than 20 years of state certified classroom teaching experience. I have expertise working with elementary students as well as supporting the professional growth of aspiring teachers. I am patient and encouraging and can help students progress to the next level of their learning journeys. I have earned degrees from some of the best schools in the country, including UCLA, Harvard, and MIT.
I earned my BA in Business Economics at UC Riverside. I mainly specialize in tutoring math up to and including Algebra II and standardized tests such as the SAT and GRE but can and will tutor in other subjects. I would also consider myself a very good test-taker and would love to impart some of my test taking tricks and tips to students to help make their lives easier and a little less stressful. I've taken and tutored the SAT, GRE, and GMAT. My favorite subject to teach would be math as it allows me to break down seemingly complicated concepts into easier ones for students to understand. I have both been tutored and have been tutoring since I was quite young so I know a variety of effective methods. I know firsthand the stress and frustration with having difficulty with particular subjects so I am very patient and try as much as possible to explain things in a way that is easy to understand and relatable. I love to travel and have lived in both the US and Asia for extended periods of time so I have experience interacting with people of all races and cultures. My other hobbies include basketball, trying new foods, and a little bit of video games.
I have a Bachelor's in Chemistry and a Master's and Ph.D. in Philosophy. I was an award-winning high school teacher for 29 years in Eastern Oregon before recently retiring. I also taught philosophy at the University level throughout that time. I can tutor in any areas of the physical sciences -- especially chemistry, physical science, and physics, which are the courses I taught. My tutoring philosophy is simple: I want to help you be successful. That doesn't just mean getting through the problems of today, but learning the skills to be successful on exams later and building skills to help you be successful in life. My passion is to develop new activities, analogies, jokes, and songs to help students learn in a fun, memorable way. I also play chess in my spare time.
Buenos Dias a Todos!I am here to tailor my teaching to your Spanish needs! I have experience in teaching all ages and all ability levels, from kindergarteners all the way through college students, as well as native Speakers who may need to touch up on spelling or grammar. I was born into a Mexican family, so the dialect that I am familiar with is Mexican Spanish, but I also studied abroad in Spain for a year while working on my bachelor's degree and am therefore also familiar with the proper Castillian Spanish from Spain. I got my bachelor's degree in Foreign Languages, Literatures, and Linguistics from the University of California, Riverside and my master's degree in International Relations from Webster University in Washington D.C. Whether you need to prepare for a test, brush up on your conversational skills, read Spanish literature, or distinguish between the different accents, I am here to help you with your Spanish language learning needs!
I am currently a senior at the University of California, Riverside. I am a future graduate of the class of 2014 as a Pre-Medical B.S. Applied Mathematics (Biology Concentration) Major. In terms of tutoring experience, I began tutoring as a junior and senior in high school because at that age I felt proficient in the subject of math. I would work with the school and tutor lower-classmen in various subjects of mathematics. Subjects include Algebra, Trigonometry, Pre-Calculus, and Calculus AB. My abilities were not limited to only high school students; I would tutor students at my old elementary school and grade school (K-8) as well, in the subjects of Pre-algebra and Algebra. Today, I am able to tutor students in a slightly larger range of mathematics classes, with the addition of Differential Equations, Multivariable Calculus, and Physics. My teaching philosophy and tutoring style would be centralized around giving students a good foundation in their respective subjects. Given a solid foundation of the fundamentals, learning and piecing together new information and concepts becomes easier for the student. While learning, I believe small mental breaks are important in order to retain information, and mentally prepare for the following information. During these small breaks, I attempt to converse with them on topics outside of academics, such as hobbies, interests, current events etc.; so this way, I can try to build a more personal relationship with them. I believe it's important for students to feel comfortable with their tutor. I want them to have the comfort level to ask me anything, regardless if it pertains to academics, or insightful personal advice. Outside of academia, my interests and hobbies include competitive sports, such as basketball, swimming. I also enjoy spending time with friends and family, snowboarding, listening and making music, writing poetry and a healthy fitness lifestyle. I am very open-minded, and always open to new things.
As your tutor, I aim to create thoughtful, innovative and exciting lessons, which support my students as individuals. I am very motivated, hardworking and dependable, and I get a real sense of purpose from helping my students to achieve the best possible grades.
I love Math and I always have. I've used it to write programs to control radar systems and to launch communication satellites. I've used it to teach Math students in Middle School, High School and College. I'm newly retired now and I still love Math. I can help you understand (and maybe love) Math too.
I received a B.S. in Chemistry from the University of California, Riverside and a Ph.D. in Chemistry from the University of Southern California. Since graduating from UCR's chemistry program, I have gained academia and industry experience in the field of chemistry, with my focus for the last four years being on high school chemistry education. I currently have my teaching certificate to teach chemistry and composite science for grades 7-12 in Texas and for the past four years taught all levels of chemistry (on-level, advanced, AP, IB and organic chemistry) at Lamar High School in Arlington, TX. I am passionate about Chemistry (and science in general), English and Math. My absolute favorite subject is chemistry (and has been ever since I took my first chemistry class in high school) because while it is possible to master its foundations and key concepts, the field of chemistry is ever expanding and changing our views of the world. As a result, I always feel like there is more to learn when it comes to the field of chemistry, which makes it that much more interesting. Through my Ph.D. studies and employment as an adjunct chemistry professor at Tarrant County College in Hurst, TX, I also have the experience and passion to facilitate learning chemistry at the undergraduate and graduate level. My teaching philosophy and tutoring approach at the high school and college level are one in the same because my main goal is to meet students where they are at in terms of understanding the concept at hand, and using their prior knowledge, learning style and various examples to facilitate their mastery of the content. In my spare time, I enjoy reading for leisure, running, writing, and spending quality time with my family.
Hi! My name is Kristy, an instructor specializing in Mandarin, Math, and Science for Varsity Tutors. My teaching style revolves around simplifying big, complicated concept into engaging, fun, and digestible lessons; learning via experience rather than rote memorization. When not tutoring students, I'm pursuing my MPH at College of Global Public Health in NYU.Before moving to New York, I studied Biological Science at the University of California, Riverside.
My approach to tutoring is very-much centered around personalization: I'm interested to know what your hobbies are, what kind of music you listen to, and what kinds of television shows and movies you enjoy. I strongly believe that engagement with any topic, even if a student is not keen on it to begin with, can be made interesting by relating it to their interests outside of academia. For example, the relationship between popular culture today and 19th century literature might not be immediately apparent, but so many things--from serialized television to pop music to superheroes and superhero movies--continue to feel the influences of earlier periods and forms (like the novel, poetry, nonfiction, and even literary celebrity of the 19th C). Additionally, I am familiar with numerous approaches to teaching composition and would be able to customize tutoring sessions to fit a wide range of student ability.I hold a PhD in English with a Graduate Certificate in Gender Studies from the University of Southern California. My dissertation was on the topic of slackers in popular film, television, and literature from the 1980s to the present, and traces the contemporary slacker's origins to 19th century literature and literary figures (such as Herman Melville's "Bartleby" and Oscar Wilde). While I was at USC I taught "Writing and Critical Reasoning," an introductory college composition course, for their Writing Program for seven and a half years. The course's themes ranged from "Black Social Movements in the U.S.," "Race, Gender, Sexuality and Popular Culture," and "Exploring Ethnicity Through Film" to "Environmental Ethics," "Contemporary Moral Issues," and "Education and Intellectual Development." I have extensive experience working with non-humanities majors (Business, Communications, Engineering, etc.) as well as non-native English speakers.I also have experience teaching English (grades 9-12) at Immaculate Heart High School, an all girls' Catholic private school, in Los Angeles, CA. During my time there I taught English I (9th Grade), American Literature (10th Grade), and Monster's in Literature (12th Grade).
I am a recent graduate from the University of California, Riverside where I received my Bachelor of Science in Neuroscience and graduated in the top 4% of my class. My senior year at UCR I worked as a tutor in the subjects of Biology, Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, Statistics, and Neuroscience. My passion for tutoring lies in my desire to reveal students' potential and build their confidence in the field of STEM. I am here to show students that they are capable and give them opportunities to utilize unique methods and techniques to approaching problems/concepts that may endure beyond one's schooling years. My tutoring approach consists of utilizing a bottom up approach to engage students by building complex concepts beginning from a fundamental level. I like to use a variety of techniques to accommodate to the needs of the students as many can be placed into the categories of: Auditory, Visual, Kinesthetic, and/or Read/Write learners.
I am a graduate of University of California Riverside with a Bachelor of Science in biology. I am currently working in a Microbiology laboratory and I am also looking to attend graduate school in the future. All throughout my academic career, I have been very interested in math and sciences. My interest eventually led me to pursue a degree in biology. Biology, along with subjects such as math and physics are the areas of study which I am fluent in. I have often led study groups during my time as a student and these experiences showed me that I can be very helpful in explaining difficult problems which the group faces. My ability to put difficult problems into comprehensible, simple terms is my greatest asset as a tutor.I would work best with high school and college students looking for help in the above mentioned subject matters or standardized testing.
I have always appreciated education and the many ways it is relevant to our life. I am a recent college graduate from UC Riverside with a BA in Psychology. Being able to say that I have a college education is a privilege and an honor to me because I feel I am making a difference in my life and my family's life being the first one to graduate from college. Along the way I had many struggles and difficulties being an immigrant to the US. I did not know English or had any friends or family other than my parents and brothers. I worked really hard and good people supported me in my journey. I know how hard getting an education can be and how students can feel overwhelmed with accomplishing their dreams. That is why I would do my best as a Varsity Tutor to influence and help students grow in their journey as productive members of our society. The journey starts from a young age and developing good habits and a positive mind set is valuable from an early age. I am delighted to be part of Varsity Tutors and making a difference in students life.
I graduated with honors from the University of California, Riverside with a Bachelor of Science degree in Mathematics - Applied Mathematics/Economics and a minor in Statistics. I love math and want to use what I have learned to help others succeed in math classes. As part of my experience in college, I was a supplemental instruction leader and involved in math reader programs, which developed my teaching skills in different levels of mathematics. Even after I graduated, I still continued to do small group teaching in a private education institute and some one-on-one tutoring. When I see my students are struggling with math, I am always patient and use different approaches to make sure they understand the material before moving on. I can also teach Mandarin Chinese and Cantonese too. If you are also interested in learning Chinese, that's a bonus! I enjoy tutoring, and with my experience, I believe I can be a great help!
My love of learning and teaching started at a young age. Teaching is a part of who I am. I believe that all children should have the opportunity to learn in a caring, fun and creative environment. I received my Bachelor of Arts in History from the University of California, Riverside (UCR). I went through the Teacher Education Program through UCR in order to achieve my Multiple Subjects Teaching Credential for California. I am also an ESL certified instructor. I have taught Pre-K through Grade 5 as a substitute and classroom teacher for over ten years in the USA, Cayman Islands, Turkey, Poland and Spain. I also taught English as a Second Language (ESL) during my teaching career. I am most passionate about Reading and History. In my spare time, I enjoy reading, learning about cultures, music and being around my family.
I have a Bachelor of Science Degree in Biochemistry from Western Washington University with a focus on material science. The subsequent year I graduated from the University of California Riverside with a master's degree in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. I have been tutoring for over four years, working with a wide variety of students. During my undergraduate studies I tutored gifted high school students looking to excel in AP and IB classes as well as on the SAT to prepare them for a strong college career. I also spent considerable time with college students in my field and similar programs. Students have always given positive reviews when I ask them about the experience, commenting that the time was enjoyable and that learning came naturally. In my opinion, this is the best way to truly learn something. Outside of the classroom, I have a large set of hobbies and interests. I enjoy basketball, tennis, road biking, mountain biking, skiing, running, chess, working on my car, watching football, and going to the gym.
I am currently a MPH student at the lovely GWU, and I graduated from the sunny University of California-Riverside after obtaining my bachelor's degree in Biology. I have taken a wide range of courses and am here to pass down my knowledge! I tutor a variety of Life Sciences (such as Biology, Genetics, Biochemistry, Evolution, Ecology, and Organic Chemistry), and in the past have worked as a tutor for both high school and college students.I know what it is to be a student, and can therefore understand the frustrations that sometimes arise when learning these subjects. These subjects can be quite difficult, and sometimes you need that one-on-one help to fully grasp the concepts. My approach is not only to reiterate the material you have learned in class but also to make sure you can apply this material in different ways relating to your course. By first targeting weaknesses, you'll be able to come out of sessions feeling like a pro, and ready to ace your exams! I use various teaching methods, all of which can be adjusted to the student's needs. I have a very strong work and study ethic, and truly believe learning is a key to life. I want the passion I have for science to transfer over to the student--or to at the least make science more bearable! I look forward to our time together! When I'm not immersed in the sciences, I enjoy exploring the outdoors or doing some yoga!
Educator and coach with 20 years of experience in life sciences and all ages of learners. Transitioned to a Salesforce role and excited to merge my teaching background with technical expertise.
Second year medical student looking to continue tutoring services that I used to provide before I started school. Always working to tailor a plan that works best for individual students. Been tutoring for 5-6 years, looking to continue the trend.
My name is Sara. I have my Bachelor's Degree in English from the University of California, Riverside where I spent my free time tutoring my classmates in articulating their thoughts onto paper. Language is a beautiful form of expression and it is my goal to ensure that students are equipped with the tools to be able to not only express themselves, but do it in a manner that will benefit them through all stages of life - whether writing a midterm paper, personal statement, or job resume. Writing is a life long skill, which is why I am passionate in ensure students are not daunted by the idea of translating their thoughts into words. I believe academic writing is a beautiful art form (yes - it's an art!) so get your paint brush - I mean pencil - ready!
I received my University education in the State of California, and graduated with Honors in my Bachelors degree in Creative Writing. Presently, I am working towards my Masters in Instructional Technology Education. I like to improve to help all my students, and to polish my skills. My teaching experience was as a Teacher in the State of California K-12. My many years of tutoring experience started under the No Child Left Behind (NCLB) Presidential project. My favorite subjects to tutor are social studies, history, reading/writing, and simple Pre-Algebraic math. I enjoy tutoring subjects like social studies, and other similar ones because it requires you to THINK! Even if students are STEM-oriented, engineers and science majors must have a good basic skill set on writing reports, and written expression. My teaching philosophy is that there should be some fun in it, and I want my students to "takeaway" something of what was learned, or encouraged, for them to use everyday and in their future. Teaching is my natural joy, and I myself love to learn. Reading and writing go together, no matter what subjects a person wants to specialize in. Reading and writing matters. They are the "glue" of understanding.Outside of academia I really love dophins. I think they are incredible. I like the ocean, and love swimming. Hiking is really great, and my favorite are the baby elephants in Kenya being saved from poachers. I love to keep up with the baby elephants' progress! I also like to travel, and do research. And, I love poetry, too!
I seek to find the best way to engage a student and pique his or her interest in a subject whether it be from thought-provoking examples or exciting future uses for particular knowledge. From my experience this is immensely helpful for developing and actually retaining mastery of a topic. Every student learns best in a different way and it is my goal to find what works best for helping a particular student and tailor my teaching method around that.My first teaching experience was instructing undergraduates while pursuing my master's at UCR. It was a very enjoyable experience in which I was able to help students broaden their knowledge and skills to succeed in the class and their future classes. This in and of itself was very rewarding, but it also allowed me to continue improving my understanding of the subject area as I searched for new ways to challenge them and analyzed different ways they approached those challenges. Thus, I am looking forward to continuing to teach students whenever I have the time.
I received my Bachelor of Arts degree in English from the University of California, Riverside and a dual Master of Arts in English and Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing from Chapman University in Orange, California. In between studies, I began my experience as a tutor for the "No Child Left Behind" program tutoring students K-8 in Reading and Language Arts in order to help them improve study habits and standardized test scores in a one-on-one setting.Upon entering graduate school at Chapman University, I began working as an English tutor for the writing center on campus. I worked one-on-one with undergraduates and graduate students of various majors in order to ensure their writing assignments (short and long papers, theses, resumes, and personal statements) were following the given prompts.I tutor any category related to the field of EnglishReading, Writing (both academic and creative), Literature, and Language Arts. My favorite subject to tutor is writing because my belief, from personal experience, is that fostering a strong and confident authorial voice is of the utmost importance for a student and it becomes applicable to all career choices one might make. In my spare time, my hobbies tend to include things that continue to foster my own authorial voice and those around me writing music and poetry, publishing a literary zine, reading leisurely, and watching films.
In 2015, I graduated with my BS in Biochemistry from the University of California, Riverside. After college, I have been working as a researcher at the UCLA Center for Inflammatory Bowel Disease where I can integrate my passion for both the bench and the bedside. Aside from my academic endeavors, I find myself passing time on the weekdays by cooking, gardening or gaming. On the weekends, you can find me surfing or snowboarding. My love for tutoring began when I was a junior in high school, and I have been actively involved in peer tutoring ever since. From algebra to biology and speech, I tutored my peers to success. In college, I once again found myself attracted to tutoring by helping students master the concepts behind biology, organic chemistry, and biochemistry. For four summers, I have worked as a camp counselor at the Painted Turtle supervising children, teens, and young adults. These summers at camp have refined my abilities to be an effective leader, listener, and communicator. I easily build strong, personal relationships which allow my students, and campers alike, to feel comfortable with learning. I engage my students and peers with infectious enthusiasm and love for learning; no matter how abstract or foreign the subject is, I can use my interdisciplinary knowledge to excite and enthrall students of all ages and abilities. I find that my most attractive quality is how I can easily incorporate personal connections to the student's interests. I feel that I can truly personalize the learning experience to make the content feel both real and relevant. I constantly adapt my methods to match the needs of the student, and their feedback about my lessons, methods, and approaches is paramount to me. I believe it is important to not only build upon what they have learned in class, but to establish a firm foundation of study and homework habits that they will carry with them beyond our sessions and into their classes.
I have a Bachelor's of Science in Electrical Engineering from the University of California, Riverside, and am currently working on my Master's in engineering from George Mason University. I work full-time as a software engineer, and have been tutoring in my spare time for about 4 years. Most of the students I work with are in high school or college, with math subjects being the most common topics I teach. I have experience teaching Algebra, Trigonometry, Geometry, and Calculus, along with computer science and physics. As result, STEM classes are my strong suit, and my engineering background and career support my teaching. Usually when I tutor, I incorporate collaboration into problem solving, and have students involved in working through problems. For instance, if I was teaching a physics problem, I would have the student set up the problem on their own before stepping in to teach. This helps students understand topics on a conceptual level, instead of just being given the answer.
I am a senior Mechanical Engineering student at the University of California Riverside. I have a love for Math and Science, and I find so much satifisfaction in helping students develop a love for it as well.
I hold a BA in History from the University of California Riverside (graduating in 2 years) and a Masters in Public Health from the University of Southern California specializing in health education. I just completed 2 years of a 6-year BS/MD program with Cleveland State University and Northeast Ohio Medical School with a 3.95 GPA. I am a dedicated student who enjoy teaching fellow classmates along with volunteering in the community.Prior to moving to Ohio, I participated in the highly-selective program known as Teach for America. Teach for America sends the brightest young college students to some of the lowest performing schools in the country with a minimum commitment of two years. I stayed a total of four years at my placement school. During that time I made tremendous gains with my students, focusing on AP exams, the ACT exam, and college entry programs. I had the highest pass rate in both the AP Calculus and AP Statistics exams in the school's history along with an average of a 4 point increase among the students that took his after school ACT Prep program.I firmly believes that if given the opportunity and the right environment students can learn anything.I look forward to working with families and students to strive for the best in themselves and in doing so, hopes to help them realize their dreams and ultimately their full potentials.
