I am a student at Carnegie Mellon University (CMU). I have spent a large portion of my life outside of the United States and am fluent in Spanish and currently studying Arabic as well. I was homeschooled for much of my life and loved it, but completed my last three years of high school in a public school and am thus well acquainted with the various forms of standardized testing. I gained the majority of my tutoring experience from working as a high school science teacher for a prestigious independent school in Chicago. With our small class sizes, I gave lots of one-on-one attention to students both during and after class. Though I decided a teaching career is not for me, I miss the one-on-one interactions I had with students and helping them with their individual needs. I learned that patience, attention, and time will get almost any student anywhere they may want to go academically. While some students may not receive the accolades they desire to obtain, if a student begins to appreciate the path and process of learning by itself, they will find they are rarely disappointed with their academic results.Although my degrees are in Chemistry, I really enjoy tutoring physics and statistics. Those two subjects are notorious for producing a fair amount of anxiety in students, so I relish in showing how manageable physics and statistics can be for anyone. I help students learn how to overcome their anxieties by guiding them to become better problem solvers. The problem solving skills they will develop under my tutelage will be useful not only in those subjects but carry over to other academic subjects and life in general.My academic background includes graduating from Loyola University Chicago with a BA in Chemistry and Physics minor. I received a MS in Chemistry from Carnegie Mellon University specializing in Theoretical/Physical Chemistry. I will be starting a Master’s program in the fall for Data Science at IIT. I am currently working towards my Masters of Arts degree in Literary and Cultural Studies at Carnegie Mellon University. Some of my current interests are postcolonial studies, literary journalism, and memoir writing. Before attending Carnegie Mellon University, I graduated from Allegheny College where I received my Bachelor of Arts in English Literature. At Allegheny College I primarily focused on Gothic and Victorian literature, postcolonial theory, representations of animals and the environment in literature, and poetry composition. In addition to my educational experience at Allegheny College, I also had the wonderful opportunity to collaborate with one of my professors on a co-authored paper titled "Shakespeare's Starlings" which will be available in this November's edition of "Environmental Humanities"! I tutor literature-related subjects ranging from High School English to College Essay Writing, as I am most passionate about this wonderful field, and eager to use my academic experiences to help students connect and engage with meaningful texts in a more enriching manner than is typically fostered by a traditional classroom setting, where ample time to discuss the richness of cultural works is so often cut short. Additionally, I love helping students develop thoughtful and original analyses of various literary works, because working through analytical and cultural problems improves critical thinking skills, encourages creativity, and promotes the ability to communicate effectively both verbally, and in a written format. Finally, I am deeply committed to helping students in any field excel at essay writing! I absolutely love editing papers, and I take a very hands-on approach in doing so by encouraging students to read their papers aloud with me in order to mutually identify and discuss any grammatical or logistical errors. It is very important to me that students leave a tutoring session understanding why they are correcting errors, not just how to, so that they fully grasp how to preemptively identify similar problems in future papers that they compose. I have seen considerable success using this technique, and most people I've worked with have advanced their writing by two letter grades after working with me three to four times. While I am most passionate about tutoring students working on essays in the fields of English and Literature, I have written in a wide variety of styles including: book reviews, computer science write-ups, data stories, literary journalism pieces, historiographical essays, memoir pieces, research proposals, personal statements, poetry, philosophy essays, satire, science reports, and more! Essay writing can be fun, engaging, and rewarding when approached in the right way, and I strive to bring the enthusiasm and love I have for this essential skill to every tutoring session I conduct.

I did my undergraduate degree in Aerospace Engineering at MIT and also completed a Masters in Robotics from CMU. I work as a robotics engineer in Boston and also run an edtech startup on the side. My name is Zhaleh BassiriRad and I am currently studying Mechanical Engineering and Japanese at Carnegie Mellon University. I am an experienced Mechanical Engineer currently trying to make my way into the product design arena. I recently moved to Oregon from Michigan in pursuit of this goal! I have always loved and had a skill for math and physics. As an opera singer, I am constantly learning. I work every day to refine my craft. But, in order to do that, I had to discover my best learning method. During my years at Carnegie Mellon University, where I graduated with honors with a bachelors in English and a bachelors in Music, I worked as an after school tutor in the Pittsburgh area, helping students with difficult subjects. I discovered that it was less the student's inability to learn but rather the way a subject was presented. I continued my education at Manhattan School of Music, receiving my masters in Music. In my experience, every student has the ability to learn a subject, it is only a matter of discovering which learning method works best for them.

I graduated the University of Pittsburgh with a degree in Politics & Philosophy, and I moved to Cleveland to teach. I've spent the last three years in classrooms with the last year dedicated to subbing and working with different types of students and in different subjects. Most of my experience comes in teaching Reading and Writing, and I have helped students of all ages improve both their real life skills in those subject areas and their test scores. I have also tutored kids who did not speak English to help them increase their speaking and writing skills. I can tutor math up to Algebra II, and I have experience teaching math in the classroom. I am a sophomore at Carnegie Mellon University, majoring in Business Administration with twin concentrations in Finance and Business Analytics. Hello! My name is Eshan, and I'm a college freshman interested in Artificial Intelligence. When I started high school, I thought I was perpetually stuck at being a mediocre mathematician. I struggled a lot in my Algebra 2 class, teaching me that math is a subject which constantly tests your resilience and determination. I decided to take two years off and work at a non profit aimed to help underrepresented students get access to opportunities and resources not readily available in their community. There I had a once in a lifetime opportunity to contribute and give back to the Lancaster community by creating my own 12-week engineering and coding course for the scholars in the program. I was once in the same shoes of many Varsity Tutors' students. I was struggling to learn my subjects and preparing for the SAT standardized test. I came from a rural high school (DuBois, PA) with no AP classes as well as no Honors classes. I was projected that engineering would be too difficult for me and that I should pursue something less rigorous. I ended up graduating with a Honors degree in chemical engineering and a minor in mathematics from the Pennsylvania State University. I then received a Ph.D. in chemical engineering from Carnegie Mellon University doing all of my research work with Sandia National Laboratories. I achieved these goals by setting high expectations for myself and striving every day to meet these expectations. I am a tutor that predominantly focuses on STEM and Business subjects from high school through graduate school as well as standardized tests. I really do not have a favorite subject here. I just enjoy teaching students who desire to learn and improve themselves. When I was an undergraduate student as well as a teaching assistant in graduate school teaching first semester students, I could take a person the night before the exam that had no clue of what was going on in class and help them achieve a B on the exam the next day. Standardized tests such as the SAT/ACT exam comprise various courses in high school and I cannot teach someone everything they need to know in one night or if a person is weeks behind in the understanding of the course material. Whether it is a standardized test or learning another subject; an assessment must be determined of where the student is currently in their understanding of the material. Next a game plan must be put together to get the student from where they are currently at to where they want to go. The fact of the matter is unless a student has always struggled in mathematics since kindergarten, they can achieve a perfect or near perfect score on the SAT/ACT mathematics section. The only traits that are required are a high level of expectations as well as the desire and effort to achieve those expectations. When it comes to solving problems, I will always ask the student on how they would solve a particular problem. Their answers can range that they definitely know how to solve it to they have absolutely no idea. I would then guide them along through each problem with the goal to have them understand a correct approach needed and to instill in the student a better understanding of the material as time goes along. As far as more information about myself, I am a person that enjoys learning and growing in all pursuits and my favorite hobby is working out and lifting weights at my local Planet Fitness. I received an undergraduate degree (AB) in Economics from Princeton University in 1978 and a graduate degree (MS) in Industrial Administration from Carnegie Mellon University in 1981. I was a certified substitute teacher in Arizona and I have substituted at the high school level at the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community. I have also substituted at various vocational and traditional high schools. I have taught a variety of undergraduate business courses as an adjunct professor at several universities, including Memphis State University, Western Connecticut State University, Quinnipiac College, University of Bridgeport, Sacred Heart University, Albertus Magnus College, Southern Connecticut State University, Central Connecticut State University and New York Institute of Technology. The courses were in the fields of finance, statistics, management, computer science and mathematics. I was also the Math Specialist at Albertus Magnus College within the Academic Development Center. In this capacity, I provided one-on-one help to students and administered mathematics competency examinations to incoming freshmen. I have also taught spreadsheet, word processing and database fundamentals at non-degree technical schools such as Connecticut Business Institute and Branford Hall. I have always enjoyed helping students and tutored graduate courses while in graduate school. Math and its applications (e.g., finance, economics and statistics) comprise my favorite subjects.
