Having worked my way up from a small four year college in South Texas to a the top doctoral program in Legal Psychology in the U.S., Psychology and Law at the Graduate Center in NYC, I feel I have a good grasp at what one needs to focus on and train in order to rise the ranks to reach the goals they would like to achieve. That being said, that all starts in the graduate school application. Recently I've graduated from the CUNY Graduate Center in Manhattan with a Master's in Liberal Arts. I wrote my thesis on the rise of vigilante heroes in Marvel Comics during the early 1980s and how these reflected the same time period in New York City. I have lived in New York for the past two and a half years in Manhattan, Brooklyn and now Ridgewood, Queens. In 2012 I graduated Trinity College in Hartford, CT with a degree in Sociology. During my undergraduate years at Trinity, I had the opportunity to travel and study in Cape Town, South Africa. During that time I volunteered in both prisons and townships working with students on reading and language skills as well as arts and crafts. I also had the chance to meet with several street artists who gave me a tour and discussed the street art history in Cape Town. These experiences have helped me in promoting learning as a way to strengthen one's life and gain opportunities that may have seemed impossible before. I love reading, art especially illustration, mural and street art as well as comics and graphic novels. I love different types of music from Hip Hop to Rock, Jazz, and Reggae and try to see different bands in my spare time.

I received my Ph.D. in Psychology from the City University of New York in 2007. I have been teaching courses in psychology and behavior analysis since 2001. Since completing my Ph.D., I have been teaching, conducting research, and working with learners on the autism spectrum and those with intellectual and developmental disabilities. I have been teaching writing and literature courses in English since 1997. I have met many types of students in the classroom--some who love writing, some who hate it, some pursuing degrees in humanities, and others pursuing degrees in the sciences or social sciences. The best way to assist students with English skills, I have found, is to meet with them independently and learn how they think, what interests them, the academic subjects the enjoy, and those with which they struggle.My background also includes tutoring at a college writing center. The most rewarding aspect of the job was meeting with students who arrived feeling uneasy about a particular writing assignment and left feeling confident and prepared to tackle it.

Katherine graduated from Columbia in 2013 where she received her B.A. in Psychology with a special concentration in Linguistics. There she combined her love of language with attention to philosophic inquiry and data-driven research. In addition to her studies, Katherine dedicated much of her time to teaching. She worked as a T.A. in the Psychology Department and volunteered with Brainiacs, a program that brought extracurricular science courses to public schools. I am a doctoral candidate in Psychology at the CUNY Graduate Center. I have been teaching statistics at the undergraduate level for the past 9 years, as well as assistant teaching masters- and doctoral-level statistics courses at NYU and CUNY. I am an alumna of the City University of New York where I earned a BA in Environmental Earth Science from Hunter College and a PhD in Earth and Environmental Sciences from The Graduate Center. My undergraduate research focused on geochemistry, geology, and soil chemistry. The bulk of my PhD work was centered on a numerical model of geologic processes within ancient 4 billion year old asteroids using Fortran90 in conjunction with MATLAB. I have 2 years of experience mentoring and tutoring college juniors and seniors. I have also led tours of the American Museum of Natural History that covered topics like gems and minerals, the geology of Manhattan's skyscrapers, and the history of the Solar System. Given my background, I am most effective at tutoring college to graduate level environmental science, geology, and MATLAB programming. I believe that education should be accessible to all who seek it and I endeavor to nurture curiosity about the natural world.

I am a Ph.D. student in mathematics at the CUNY Graduate Center, with research interests in algebraic topology and category theory. I am also an instructor at Brooklyn College, where I have taught introductory college math courses for the past year. My interests in mathematics are broad, and I tutor at all levels. I completed my BA at Swarthmore College in 2014, and that is also where I began tutoring, primarily through the math department. I have tutored college-aged students in all levels of mathematics, from college algebra and trigonometry to real analysis and topology. I have additionally tutored high school calculus students as well as elementary school math, and high school and college physics. Largely due to my focus on mathematics, my favorite subjects to tutor are within these fields as well: while any opportunity to explain new mathematical concepts to students is a great joy to me, I find that the breakthroughs students experience in calculus and basic algebra (Algebra I or Algebra II) are the most exciting, and those subjects are correspondingly my favorite to tutor.When I'm not tutoring or studying, I'm pretty reliably involved in some way in one of three activities. I devote a significant amount of my time to solving crossword puzzles, and am a regular competitor in the American Crossword Puzzle Tournament. I am also a baseball fan, and spend a lot of time watching the St. Louis Cardinals, reading about them, or reading about baseball in general. The last of my main hobbies is calligraphy. I've always been interested in the way that letters look, and so I'm often learning new types of handwriting, and practicing on any scrap of paper that I can find. These hobbies are all connected by a love of intricacy and an attention to detail that is found through all levels of education, especially within mathematics.I firmly believe that tutoring is an extension of the teaching process, and that as such my job as a tutor is to give my students the skills they need not only to solve the particular problems they bring to me, but also to fully understand the subjects they are studying, and to understand the techniques behind the solutions to their problems. In particular, this means that my tutoring style is very student-involved: I will always begin a problem by asking the student where they think they should start, or what progress they have made on the problem. I find that the student misses a significant part of the tutoring experience if they are not the primary force behind solving the problems they bring to me, and as a result I consider myself as more of a resource to guide the student to the right solution rather than a solution manual to consult or a teacher to recapitulate a lecture. Of course, if what the student needs is a further explanation of lectured material, I am also happy to provide that, but I find it is best covered within the context of particular problems: we learn best by doing, and solving homework problems is no exception.Within math, I tutor nearly every subject. Particular areas of expertise include algebra, geometry, trigonometry, and calculus (1, 2, AP Calculus AB, AP Calculus BC). Outside of math, I tutor first-year high school chemistry (including honors chemistry), physics (honors, AP Physics B, AP Physics C, college physics), as well as SAT prep. I have a strong preference for in-person tutoring, as I find it much easier to work face-to-face with a student, but I am willing in exceptional cases to tutor online as well.

I have a BA from the University of Maryland College Park in Spanish, Russian, and Secondary Education, and an MA from CUNY Graduate Center in Urban Education. I taught Spanish for 7 years in middle and high school and I tutored high school Spanish students of all levels after school. I lived in Spain for a semester in 2005 and I absolutely loved it! I also lived in St. Petersburg, Russia for an academic year and it was the experience of a lifetime. I currently run an online store selling my teaching materials. I enjoy getting creative with the Spanish language! Teaching is a passion of mine and I am very enthusiastic. I enjoy watching students learn and grow and I love Spanish culture and the language (and even the grammar!). I am a graduate of the Schreyer Honors College at the Pennsylvania State University. I received my B.A. in English with a minor in Spanish. Currently, I am pursuing my Master’s degree in Comparative Literature at The CUNY Graduate Center with a language focus on Spanish texts and an interest in the American Romantic Movement. I have always had a strong interest in English grammar and composition, and I have tutored that subject area extensively both during my undergraduate studies and at present. My strength is SAT test prep, both Verbal and Writing, as well as Critical Reading and Composition practice. Strong language skills are critical for a student’s success and advancement every step of the way, from elementary school to future growth in the workplace.
