With a B.S. in Developmental Psychology and preschool education training from Cornell University and a M.Ed in International Education from Harvard University, I became an elementary school teacher at the United Nations International School in New York City. I loved teaching here because of the multicultural atmosphere. I loved interacting with international students and learning about different cultures.I presently tutor at the elementary school level and I especially love teaching math because it's like puzzles to figure out. I use many visual aids and really believe in breaking down everything to the basics and my motto is review, review and review. I believe it's important to go over things because we all forget and that's ok.

I have been a highly skilled middle school science teacher for the past three years in New York City public schools. This experience enables much familiarity with the standards and curriculums that some students may need help with in all subject areas. After tutoring some students I realized that they performed better in numerous tasks since they gained confidence and skills from our sessions. I believe that working one-on-one could develop better understanding of a subject since the tutor and student will work to meet specific goals with strengths and weaknesses kept in mind.
Throughout my career, whether in the cockpit of a US Naval jet or working on strategies for an asset allocation modes, I actively use math everyday. My love of math is profound and my three Honor Roll children are shining examples. I have formally and informally tutored hundreds of pupils for 35+ years and believe that students need to understand concepts rather than memorize them.

I am a graduate of Hobart and William Smith Colleges and CUNY Lehman College. I received my Bachelor of Arts in English with a focus on Creative Writing and my Masters in English Education (grades 7 - 12). Since 2018, I've helped students through the Pathways to Graduation program achieve their High School Equivalency diploma by passing the TASC exam. My content focus for this exam has been English (reading and writing) and Social Studies. My teaching philosophy (especially when it comes to standardized tests) stems from my background in athletics. My whole life, I've competed, and what I've learned is this: the harder you practice, the easier the game will be. Regardless of the topic I teach, I aim to bring a variety of different examples and practice questions in order to see the topic from every angle - that way, by the time the test comes around, there's nothing that hasn't been seen before. When I'm not teaching, I enjoy running, reading, cooking, and watching stand-up specials or movies with friends.

With over 20 years of attending school regularly, receiving a free public school education, and making every effort to achieve in all areas of my education, I know what it means to be a successful teacher. My teaching career encompasses substantial student diversity, including elementary, middle school, and college students from different cultural backgrounds, both one-on-one and in classroom setting. In spite of this, I succeeded in instilling in many of them a respect for the subject and a grasp of the fundamental principals. Because of my technical experience, I am comfortable using a combination of technology and traditional teaching methods to communicate mathematical concepts to students and have successfully done so throughout the past few years.I firmly believe that every child is entitled to an enriching education, respect, and professionalism. My goals are to motivate students in ascertaining their inner strength, abilities and activities that truly inspire them. With 20 years in the classroom, I have seen firsthand that every child can become a skilled reader with the right techniques and consistent support. While I began my career in high school education, I found my true calling in the early grades—specifically 2nd and 3rd Grade—where the transition from "learning to read" to "reading to learn" is so critical. I specialize in literacy intervention for students with significant hurdles, including dyslexia. Utilizing evidence-based programs like UFLI, I identify specific gaps in phonics and decoding to help students bridge grade-level divides and jump multiple reading levels with confidence. For math, If one explanation isn't clicking, I have a toolkit of alternative strategies and visual tools to help concepts "stick." I am highly familiar with standardized testing requirements and can provide targeted, low-stress prep for children. As a retired teacher, I enjoy traveling and painting when I am not tutoring students.

I firmly believe learning any subject matter is not tied only to the classroom. There are so many resources that are now readily available to be able to comprehend and dialogue to. As a tutor I believe it is not just my responsibility to provide material and ideas to get the student to understand but to be able to find the energy and motivation to stay focused and get through the lesson as quickly and efficiently as possible. The ability to be able to engage to something new and finding meaning to finally understand something we are having trouble comprehending, is equally rewarding as it is a confidence booster. The more fun we can make the lesson the more memorable the information being given can be. Together we can make this happen, adapting to your learning style and any opinion you may have that may help you retain what is most important. I'm here to help every step of the way, catering to any type of information that is being sought.

I'm a former high school English teacher and college counselor from Chicago enrolled at a graduate writing program at the University of Minnesota. I most love helping students discover their power and voice through college essays and projects for their literature courses, but I also love helping students grow in their reading skills and other classes.I believe that every learner has the ability to grow if a good teacher or tutor pushes him or her along the way. I try to do that through first getting to know the student and then empowering him or her through modeling and questioning to get to core understanding. I like to also use humor and a lot of patience.

Furthermore, these experiences, in essence, will allow me to differentiate instruction and to break down today's learning curriculum standards and content that will match their interests, learning, emotional, and social needs. In turn, I believe that these attributes can bring forth a connection and growth with the students that I wish to work, mentor, and teach here at Varsity Tutors!

Education and teaching has been my passion from a young age. I would trade my recess times in elementary school to go into classrooms and just watch teachers and volunteer as a student helper. I have enjoyed working in many positions in education, such as a teacher, educational director, mentor, and program evaluator to name a few. While each position was different, they were all about making sure that learning was fun and engaging for every single student. My favorite position was helping teachers teach and providing support in making the learning environment come alive. . Being able to go into the classrooms and share fun strategies with teachers such as lesson activities, making up learning songs, and connecting learning to real world experiences, was and is truly rewarding. Being an educator for both students and teachers is an amazing position to hold. However, the greatest treasure that I have found is the learning and growth that I receive from each student and teacher that I am able to work with.
