I blankly stared at the black and white CT-scan at the front of the classroom. I think the brain is slightly clotted on the "Misha, come up to the board." Oh darn, I thought to myself. If there was any class I absolutely feared during the University of Pittsburgh Health Care Scholars Academy (UPHCSA), it was neuroscience. On the day our classes were assigned, I remember clasping my hands together, closing my eyes, praying, anything but neuro, anything but neuro. Little did I know that neurosurgery would become one of the subjects I love to teach.Tutoring gives me a myriad of opportunities to further my own science education. In high school, I took every opportunity to extend my knowledge beyond classroom lectures, from the national Verizon App Challenge to witnessing awe-inspiring open-heart surgeries. With the knowledge and information that I gained, at Upper St. Clair High School, I tutored at the Success Tutor Center, enlightening other students about what I learned as an inquisitive individual.More than a desire for a challenge by attending student's needs and to share my knowledge with others, tutoring fulfills my need for meeting new people, and learning about different types of people in the world.My love of science is only part of me. I am currently attending Georgia Institute of Technology where I am studying economics. I have worked with a large age range of students in a variety of subjects. The subjects I have the most experience tutoring are history, economics, and high school and AP level math. Even though math always has one right answer, there are many different paths to get there. Just as we find our own groove to the music, we all must find our own math groove. As a teacher, I am their DJ as well as their instructor helping them to determine which genre of music speaks to them as well as introducing them to new material.My goal is for my students to be autonomous and be able to solve complex problems without prompting from me. My students need to feel safe and encouraged not only to succeed but also to feel safe to fail. We sometimes learn the most from our failures, and my students must understand that at times, we all make mistakes, but we must learn from them and keep striving for success. Success will come to each student in his or her own time and in his or her own way. I am just a catalyst to help make it happen.

My name is Ethan, and I have a Master's in Human-Computer Interaction from Georgia Tech and a Bachelor's in Human Centered Design from the University of Washington. My teaching experience began as an AP Calculus aide for a high school class during my freshman year of college. I then worked as a Computer Science teaching assistant from my sophomore year through my fifth year, supporting students with programming concepts, assignments, debugging, and problem-solving. After graduating, I worked as a substitute teacher for a year, including three months as a long-term Computer Science substitute responsible for instructing and grading assignments for ~100 6th8th graders. As a substitute teacher, I primarily supported middle and high school students across core subjects. I am passionate about biomedical engineering, and am endlessly amazed by intricacies of the world around us. I received my B.S. in chemistry from the University of Washington. I am currently a Ph.D candidate in inorganic chemistry at the Georgia Institute of Technology, where I research lanthanide and actinide compounds and their X-ray spectroscopy signatures. A patented inventor, Travis graduated from the Georgia Institute of Technology in 2020 with a degree in biomedical engineering (concentrated in biomechanics) and a minor in industrial design. Travis scored a 35 on the ACT and graduated salutatorian of his high school class while playing varsity baseball and participating in marching and concert band, so he knows that the ability to perform under pressure, whether on a standardized test or in a normal day of class, comes from self-confidence and discipline. He has completed coursework and can tutor in a variety of subjects, but is especially proficient in STEM areas, such as college-level biology, chemistry, physics, and mathematics (up to linear algebra, differential equations, and multivariable calculus). A long-time tutor dating back to his friends in high school and college, Travis knows firsthand that nothing proves that you have mastered a concept more than the ability to teach it to someone else. When I was young, I realized that I thought differently about Mathematics than my peers. I read the textbook and instantly understood it. Meanwhile, they struggled for hours. Seeing my childhood friends struggle in this way tugged on my heartstrings the same then as it does to see this struggle in my adult friends today. Because of this, I have developed a great passion for helping other people understand complex ideas. I have a strong belief that the best thing for a society is the spread of advanced critical thinking skills, so any learning assistance I can offer someone is doubly satisfying to me in that way. I studied for two years at Georgia Tech working towards a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering, before having to withdraw for medical reasons. Through my work as a tutor, I intend to fund my return to collegiate education, although I am now interested in a degree more directly related to Mathematics. I enjoy tutoring many levels of Math, from basic Algebra all the way to mid-level Calculus. I am currently working toward earning my undergraduate degree in Computer Engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology. I am a father, husband, coach, senior business leader with a fortune 100 company, and former Army officer. Having raised two sons, I discovered that I love teaching.
