Hi! I am Jordy, a lover of learning and teaching!I am a Georgia Tech graduate with highest honors with a degree in Industrial and Systems Engineering. I have worked various jobs in industry and consulting with my most recent being with a company called Revenue Analytics based in Atlanta, GA. I recently left RA to pursue a passion in flying, so I am now working with ATP Flight School to become a professional pilot!I love to learn and grow my mind and knowledge- and love to share the process of learning with others! My preference is in-person tutoring as it provides the best setting to develop an effective tutoring relationship. I would love to help you or your child better understand and excel in a specific subject, but more importantly, help develop lifelong studying habits for the future! My Tutoring Maxim:1) Never stop learning.2) Struggling is the journey to learning.3) Not knowing what you're talking about is not cool.

I blankly stared at the black and white CT-scan at the front of the classroom. I think the brain is slightly clotted on the "Misha, come up to the board." Oh darn, I thought to myself. If there was any class I absolutely feared during the University of Pittsburgh Health Care Scholars Academy (UPHCSA), it was neuroscience. On the day our classes were assigned, I remember clasping my hands together, closing my eyes, praying, anything but neuro, anything but neuro. Little did I know that neurosurgery would become one of the subjects I love to teach.Tutoring gives me a myriad of opportunities to further my own science education. In high school, I took every opportunity to extend my knowledge beyond classroom lectures, from the national Verizon App Challenge to witnessing awe-inspiring open-heart surgeries. With the knowledge and information that I gained, at Upper St. Clair High School, I tutored at the Success Tutor Center, enlightening other students about what I learned as an inquisitive individual.More than a desire for a challenge by attending student's needs and to share my knowledge with others, tutoring fulfills my need for meeting new people, and learning about different types of people in the world. My love of science is only part of me. I am an international being. As much as I adore my background, I enjoy international environments. Six years of practicing martial arts earned me a black belt and knowledge of Korean traditions. Stemming from high school experiences at Model United Nations and Model European Union, I'm excited to get involved with University of Michigan's Model United Nations (MUNUM). I can't wait to accompany the university's TAAL dance team members as they take the stage and sweep trophies.Motivated to venture the unknown and solve meaningful challenges with students at Varsity Tutors, I am most excited to interact with individuals just as curious and determined as I am. As a tutor I am able to fully develop my many interests, fusing all the pieces of me into a well-rounded, well-educated scientist and help them do the same.

I am currently attending Georgia Institute of Technology where I am studying economics. I am passionate about teaching because I love helping achieve that moment of understanding and I believe that teaching is crucial to the future of our society. I have worked with a large age range of students in a variety of subjects. The subjects I have the most experience tutoring are history, economics, and high school and AP level math. My favorite subjects to tutor are ones that involve math because I enjoy applied math and I want others to be able to enjoy or at least feel comfortable doing math. My teaching philosophy is to adapt to the concerns and needs of each student. I also aim to make the material engaging. Students learn in different ways and it is my job to determine how to best help them remember and understand material. My other interests include creative writing, football, swimming, hiking, rock climbing, and reading.

In 1992, Teen Barbie was heard saying, "Math Class is tough," which was often misquoted as, "Math is hard." Math Class can be tough and math can be hard, but it doe not have to be. Even though math always has one right answer, there are many different paths to get there. Just as we find our own groove to the music, we all must find our own math groove. As a teacher, I am their DJ as well as their instructor helping them to determine which genre of music speaks to them as well as introducing them to new material. My goal is for my students to be autonomous and be able to solve complex problems without prompting from me. My students need to feel safe and encouraged not only to succeed but also to feel safe to fail. We sometimes learn the most from our failures, and my students must understand that at times, we all make mistakes, but we must learn from them and keep striving for success. Success will come to each student in his or her own time and in his or her own way. I am just a catalyst to help make it happen.

A long-time tutor dating back to his friends in high school and college, Travis knows firsthand that nothing proves that you have mastered a concept more than the ability to teach it to someone else. This principle is something Travis likes to utilize in tutoring sessions, where concepts are broken down into elementary, fundamental building blocks that the student can use in progressively more complex and challenging scenarios, ultimately reaching the level of understanding where the student is able to teach these core concepts back to me. Travis is originally from Dallas, Texas, has lived in Georgia, Indiana, Ireland, Arizona, and Pennsylvania, and currently lives in the Raleigh, North Carolina area. When I was young, I realized that I thought differently about Mathematics than my peers. I read the textbook and instantly understood it. Meanwhile, they struggled for hours. Seeing my childhood friends struggle in this way tugged on my heartstrings the same then as it does to see this struggle in my adult friends today. Because of this, I have developed a great passion for helping other people understand complex ideas. I have a strong belief that the best thing for a society is the spread of advanced critical thinking skills, so any learning assistance I can offer someone is doubly satisfying to me in that way. I studied for two years at Georgia Tech working towards a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering, before having to withdraw for medical reasons. Through my work as a tutor, I intend to fund my return to collegiate education, although I am now interested in a degree more directly related to Mathematics. I enjoy tutoring many levels of Math, from basic Algebra all the way to mid-level Calculus. In fact, regardless of the topic at hand, I place a heavy emphasis on the importance of algebraic derivation, and understanding of Algebra in general. As they say, "Calculus is two steps of magic, and 30 steps of Algebra."

I am currently working toward earning my undergraduate degree in Computer Engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology. I have excelled in many math and computer science courses, programmed for my college robotics team and taught 4 and 5th graders programming concepts in addition to tutoring friends and family in my free time. I am currently focusing most of my efforts on tutoring all levels of mathematics from pre-algebra to differential equations and linear algebra. I am also available to tutor beginning programming concepts and assist with preparing for the AP Calculus AB/BC and Computer Science A exams. I love tutoring math because it is the subject that everyone loves to hate. Many math courses fail to answer the age-old question: Why do I need to know this? and succeed in killing students curiosity before they ever have an opportunity to develop the mathematical maturity to be creative! My primary responsibilities as a tutor are to 1) Understand my students current study strategies and what topic they are currently struggling with, 2) Help students understand why they are struggling with a topic and how to identify any other study problems they may be having and 3)give the student the pre-requisite knowledge and resources to fix their current problem and develop learning strategies that can help them for years to come. Even if a student leaves my sessions believing that math is useless, they will still develop a value of discipline and learn to understand how their current study habits may be holding them back from success.
