Hi! I'm a recent graduate of Wesleyan University, where I received my Bachelor's of Arts in European Studies, with a focus on history, literature and philosophy, specifically 20th century history and colonial studies. I also spent a semester abroad in France and went on to work there for several months. Since graduation, I have traveled extensively throughout Europe and am currently working several part-time jobs in New Haven with hopes of pursuing a career in urban development. I am passionate about learning and helping others realize their full potential!

I graduated from Wesleyan University with a degree in Neuroscience & Behavior. I also obtained a Masters in Teaching with a focus on middle school math from Relay Graduate School of Education. I now look to pursue a PhD in sociology in the upcoming year.I have worked five years in education, three of which I spent teaching middle school math. Math and Science are my favorite subjects. I believe it is important to understand the ways in which our world works, and these subjects provide a good foundation for building necessary critical-thinking skills in kids.I consider myself a coffee enthusiast. So, in my spare time I love to explore new coffee shops. Aside from that I love to dance, go on hikes, and spend time with cats. I believe it is important to have a healthy life outside of education, hence my hobbies.
I'm a clinical psychologist recently out of grad school. I'm passionate about teaching, test prep, and coaching. I look forward to working with you.
I am a rising senior at Wesleyan University pursuing a Bachelor of Arts degree in Government and Latin American Studies. I have extensive experience with Spanish-language coursework and tutoring: I spent a semester one-on-one tutoring a high school student in beginning Spanish, have taken countless university-level Spanish classes, have taken both the Language and Literature AP Spanish tests, and have traveled and lived abroad in Spanish-speaking countries.I also have experience tutoring elementary math; I spent an entire summer creating and teaching an original curriculum of basic skills math classes to high school students. I also took the SAT fairly recently and would love to pass my expertise on to any high school student preparing to take the test soon! My teaching style/philosophy is visual and practice-based. I always tailor my sessions to the the student's specific needs but I love to incorporate interactive activities and many practice problems.

I am passionate about taking the stress out of science (and maybe even make it fun)! I break down complex topics into clear steps and focus on the "why" behind them, not just memorizing the facts. With a background in molecular biology and research, I've learned how to explain tough topics in a ways that makes sense. I would love to help you feel confident, whether you're catching up, getting ahead, or aiming to ace your next test. I look forward to working with you :)
I always did well in school but rarely played by the book. This seems to be a theme in my life, refusing to accept the world just as it is presented to me. I am a kind of person who tends to make life harder on themselves because I cannot seem to bend my will to fit the mainstream. In academic settings my visual learning disability necessitated that I find success in creative outlets and work more closely with my teachers (I was always doing alternative projects that could demonstrate my knowledge of the material). Another example might be my gender, which I have found over the past several years to be neither male nor female (talk about uninterrogated mainstreams). I have found tremendous joy, peace of mind, and perhaps even success in accepting these way of being and adapting to embrace them.I went to a performing arts High school where I studied theater, Music and all the regular requirements. I have been fluent in Spanish since age 10 thanks to my Cuban father's efforts in assimilating my brother and I. Toward the end of high school I was mostly taking classes at Amherst College and volunteering as a teaching assistant for the pre-GED class at an adult basic education center. I spent one spring at a Quaker semester program in California. I was raised Quaker and as such many of the most important experiences in my life have been facilitated through Quaker programs. I was very lucky after High School (as we know college admittance is a crap shoot)to be accepted early decision to Wesleyan University, where I continued to pursue Theater as a playwright. In college I was a tutor for creative non-fiction classes. I also gained a lot of experience workshopping various written forms in group and one on one settings. As a writer I have learned that good writing is mostly about editing and revising. I have come to love helping others through the sometimes heart breaking process of uncovering what they were really meaning to say. It is so important to have another set of eyes seeing what you may be too close to your writing to see.learning well is about knowing oneself. You have to trust your gut in order to learn about what you need to engaged with a subject. Learning is not easy. It is not a science. Sometime there will be things that just won't stick in your head. But you can have support and someone to keep you on track and keep you motivated.
Proud to say I have begun tutoring through Varsity Tutors. I am a recent college grad who loves teaching and working with students and hopes to give people the wonderful collegiate experience that I have received at Wesleyan University. In my spare time I love to run and am currently training for a marathon. I'm also a passionate visual and auditory learner so I love to see shows, listen to music, and watch movies, all of which help keep me creative and happy!
Over the last five years, I have helped students develop the requisite skills, strategies, and confidence to overcome whatever difficulty faces them. My years of experience have left me with a deep conviction that empathy is a key characteristic in an effective tutor. I never forget that as a tutor, I enter a student's life at an especially fraught time. My student's and I work together to figure out what tools they need to succeed. Whether for standardized tests or academic subjects, I look forward to helping you or someone you care about reach their potential. For my own academic history, I scored in the 99th percentile on all three sections of the SAT, as well as attaining a score of 5 on the AP Statistics, US Government, US History, and English Literature and Composition exams. I completed my BA in Government in December after having served as a Research Apprentice with the Quantitative Analysis Center, and my thesis utilizing a range of novel econometrics to isolate the effect of public financing of elections on legislator ideology has been awarded Honors.
I've taught mathematics at the middle school level since 1972. I retired in 2009 after 37 years of teaching, took a year off, and decided that a life of retirement wasn't for me. Fortunately I was rehired as a math interventionist and I've been working at that job ever since, and loving it. I'm active in my local Lutheran church and served as its financial secretary. I'm currently an elder in my church. I've taught in summer school and in after school programs too. I do love teaching... that's why I can't seem to leave it. These days I'm employed as a paraprofessional at Middletown High School.I spend a lot of my spare time with my grandson, Joshua, who is 13 years old and a total delight. He never fails to make me smile. He attends middle school in Glastonbury where he is an A student and football player. I look forward to attending his games every week.
My name is Howe. I graduated from Wesleyan University in May, and I recently moved from New York to West Philly, where I am very excited to be working with Varsity Tutors. I love being able to work with students in a one-on-one setting; for students to truly grasp difficult concepts, they must be able to discuss the material freely with their teacher, which is rarely possible in a classroom setting. For writing especially, one-on-one tutoring is essential to developing one's skills. As a Varsity Tutor, I hope to not only strengthen students' writing and academic performance, but also make them feel more confident in their ability to learn.
As a passionate Neuroscientist with a PhD from Wesleyan University, I have over 6 years of experience in tutoring subjects such neuroscience, neural systems, molecular biology, genetics, general biology, and scientific writing (AP level, college level, and high school level). My teaching philosophy prioritizes the individual learning needs of each student, ensuring that complex concepts are presented in an accessible manner. I am dedicated to fostering a supportive learning environment where students feel comfortable engaging with the material, asking questions, and providing feedback. My goal is to empower students to develop their skills and confidence, ultimately leading to academic success. I am also interested in continuing to explore the intersection of science and education, which fuels my commitment to helping students thrive.
Hello! My name is Langston Morrison, J.D.. I am from Pennsylvania and have a deep passion for learning and teaching foreign languages. I speak English, Spanish, Mandarin, German, French, Kiswahili, etyo (language spoken by the Bubi people of Equatorial Guinea), and Lingala. I also read and write Egyptian hieroglpyhs and Coptic. In my language sessions, I utilize an immersion-based approach where I prioritize the use of the target language in sessions. Limited English is spoken by me and the student. This is useful and necessary because it enables and encourages the student to enhance his/her speaking and listening skills. In addition, I utilize fun tools to practice reading and writing as well to improve the student's vocabulary and grammar. For any inquiries regarding our sessions or student progress, please don't hesitate to reach out on this platform or via cell phone or email (see below). Merci, c'est parti! I am a graduate of Wesleyan University, where I received my Bachelor of Arts in Sociology with High Honors. With eight years of experience working in education, I've tutored students in math, science, history, and English, as well as helped students prepare for standardized tests. I've guided adults towards passing the US Citizenship Exam and taught English in India, where I lived for six months. Whenever I work with a student I personalize the lessons to fit their particular learning style, since I know every student is unique and having the right fit can make all the difference in making learning fun and effective. My strengths are tutoring the social sciences and humanities, as well as making math and standardized tests approachable to students that normally don't like those subjects. In my spare time I like traveling, spending time in the outdoors (climbing & backpacking), meditation, and playing soccer. Next fall I will be beginning my PhD in Education at Harvard University.
Hello! I am a rising 1L at the University of Chicago Law School with a background tutoring students from 5th grade through undergrad. As an undergraduate, I attended Wesleyan University where I studied religious studies, philosophy, European history, and theoretical economics. While there, I won honors for my writing and research. For students interested in improving their writing, I work with all age groups to cultivate an ear for rhythm, an eye for detail, a mind for research--and a stomach for revision, revision, revision. For the LSAT, we will come up with a plan for preparing that is customized to your schedule and goals. This plan will likely include daily drilling with real LSAT problems, supplemented by book reading and practice tests. During our sessions that target logical reasoning sections, we will focus on argument structure. We will work on identifying conclusions, premises, and assumptions in arguments, as well as how to use these skills to answer necessary and sufficient assumption questions. For analytical reasoning (logic games), we will break down the three most common types of games and focus on maintaining accuracy while building solving speed. Finally, for reading comprehension, we will work together to come up with an approach that emphasizes your strengths (like reading quickly, remembering details, annotating effectively) to move towards a higher score.I am looking forward to meeting you!
Fourteen years ago, I accidentally became a teacher and fell in love with the work. Since that time, I've worked with just about every age group and helped all kinds of people to read, write, hear, and speak English. More recently, I've made a switch to teaching pre-schoolers, which means that now I'm also helping people learn to count, sing, breathe deeply, hold a pencil, treat others kindly, and all sorts of other new things. If I had to summarize what I've learned so far from all of these teaching experiences, I'd boil it down to this: A good attitude accounts for at least 75% of learning. If you feel you can learn it, and you're not afraid of making some mistakes along the way, then you will ultimately learn it. Whom I have encountered regrettably often, however, are students who don't feel that way. So a major part of my work is not only to make the learning easier, but also to demonstrate to a student how far he or she has already progressed along the journey. It's easy to see where we need improvement; ironically, it can be much harder to be able to take stock of our success. But the balance is critical—sometimes I feel that if I can just help a person improve their self-confidence, then the rest will practically take care of itself. As far as my own motivation is concerned, it's as simple as this: I like people, and I like getting to know what makes them tick. To me, teaching is no more or less than a process of getting to know somebody, as mediated by whatever learning goals are before us. If I can help you gain a skill or attain to an achievement, it's because I learned enough about how you think and work to help guide you there. Learning about who students are is its own reward for me; after all, how can people not be fascinating? In my free time, I like to keep things pretty quiet. My favorite thing to do is to make music, and you can listen to the results on my SoundCloud page. I've been a keyboard player since age 5, and a self-taught guitarist since 15. Another avid habit of mind is to practice mindfulness meditation; this is something I was more or less driven to as a result of my years in the public schools, which are environments where it's really really hard to pay attention. In the past few years, I've started sharing what I've learned with others as a mindfulness coach, and it's very gratifying to see people make leaps and bounds in their attentional skills within weeks or months that it's taken me years to see in my own practice. More information about this can be found on my website, equanimizer.com.Thank you for reading. I am looking forward to helping you meet your challenges!
I am a graduate of Wesleyan University with a Bachelor's degree in chemistry. While in college I worked as a tutor and teaching assistant for first year chemistry, holding weekly sessions where I went over homework and tests. After college I worked for two years at an after-school enrichment program where I again tutored and taught classes in chemistry, math, as well as SAT and ACT prep courses. I have always enjoyed teaching in one form or another, whether it be for academic subjects, music lessons, drawing or martial arts.
I recently graduated from Wesleyan University with a degree in Neuroscience, and I'm hoping to eventually become a doctor. As a self-described science nerd, I'm fascinated by the intricacies of how the world around us works, and I think that is infectious to my students. One of my favorite subjects to tutor is Biology because it explains how we ourselves function. My enthusiasm has helped me make science and math engaging and accessible to the students I work with. My experience includes teaching middle school, high school, and college students in both subject specific review and test preparation. I have an approach that is centered around finding the root cause of a students struggles, be it misunderstanding of content, time management, or any other reason, and offering multiple specifically-tailored methods for the student to employ before settling on what works best for them. I aim for my clients to improve as overall students as well, so that they can be successful in the face of any future academic challenges.Aside from my teaching and academic pursuits, my favorite hobbies are playing music and cooking. I play the bass and sitar in any style from Indian classical music to Top 40 Taylor Swift hits. In the kitchen, I love to take a scientific approach to cooking, understanding the chemical reactions underlying why one dinner tasted delicious while another fell flat.
I am a second-year Clinical Psychology Doctoral student at Fairleigh Dickinson University. I received my Bachelor of Arts in Psychology and Science in Society. I have been tutoring since I was in high school. I myself took IB Psychology so I understand what it's like! I love teaching so I'm very passionate about tutoring. My favorite parts of psychology are clinical, social, and the history/philosophy behind psychology. Other than psychology I love history and specifically 20th century history.
I teach all types of writing. My students range from high school students writing course papers and essays to university students composing research papers and dissertations to adults engaged in self-study with creative writing. Some of my creative writing courses are "The Courage to Write Poetry Workshop" and "Writing My Multicultural Voice." I earned my PhD and MS degree from Cornell University; my BA is from Wesleyan University in Middletown, CT.
I am a graduate of Wesleyan University who is now based in the New York Metropolitan Area. I received my Bachelor of Arts in Hispanic Literatures & Cultures and in History, with a focus on U.S. History and Latin American History. I also plan to pursue a doctorate in History. I have been teaching in various capacities for many years now, and have worked with students from Pre-K all the way to high school seniors. While I enjoy all subjects, I am most passionate about Spanish and History. I believe a nuanced understanding of diverse histories and languages, with an emphasis on those of the underrepresented, is an invaluable tool to which all students should have access. I hope to sow understanding and awareness in students of all backgrounds, to empower their voices, and to make learning fun!
My experiences in the field of education have involved a variety of different areas, including elementary level math, reading, and writing, as well as Chemistry and Biology. As a Neuroscience liberal arts major, I have a background in a wide variety of subjects, allowing me to approach each subject using techniques that integrate methods from different topics. I have experience through a volunteer organization called Project Story Boost in which I tutored elementary school children from 3rd-4th grade in reading and comprehension. As a Big Sister, I also tutored a third grader in math and science. I was also a tutor for an Introductory level college Chemistry course at Bates College, in which I was paired individually with a student who needed assistance in understanding homework and lecture material. I have also been a teaching assistant for two different statistical analysis courses at Wesleyan University in which I held office hours and lectures to help students with their comprehension of the course material. My methods for teaching reading and writing involve integrating fun, exciting techniques that engage the student in the material. By involving different methods of approaching the material, the student will be exposed to the material in different ways, allowing him or her to become interested in the subjects.Though I have mastered the topics I am comfortable tutoring, I treat each tutoring session as a learning process in which the student and I learn the material together as a team. This type of tutoring dynamic fosters a positive learning environment in which the student is able to thrive. This environment allows students to replace the idea that the material is "too hard" with the idea that the material is an "exciting challenge." I am trained in different communication techniques that allow me to accurately assess the weak points for students, and using these points as a baseline for the session, I tailor each session to the student's individual needs. My greatest ambition as a tutor is to inspire children to both find and develop their own passions for learning.
Learning improves your life. I have never been disappointed with having gained knowledge. I have found this truth to improve my circumstances in my professional and personal life. Sharing our knowledge is one of the greatest gifts we can give for individuals and for society as a whole. I seek to bring a joy and light-heartedness to learning that will encourage the student to overcome and perceived weaknesses and build confidence in their ability to learn on their own.
Learning is not only about sharing knowledge, it is about implementing and cultivating intellectual curiosity which cements the fundamental pillars for long-term success and sustained autonomous learning.Having studied at different schools in France, Spain, Italy, and the US, I have developed a multinational sense and universality which has allowed me to absorb four languages proficiently. Additionally, attending a Military School in the US allowed me to develop the necessary discipline and character to assume the responsibility of teaching. I am a true believer in leading by example, and it is a fundamental principle in my courses.I am eager to help and excited to climb the mountain of learning with you!
When I was in high school, many people told me that I was not a "science person" and that because STEM did not come naturally to me, I could never succeed in science. Fortunately, one biology teacher believed in me and inspired me to step out of my comfort zone and into science. Now, I am a PHD student studying environmental science. While my research focus is on microbial ecology, I have broad tutoring experience, ranging from teaching reading and math skills to elementary school students, tutoring middle school students in English and writing, and teaching biology to college students as a course assistant. I tutor in two main areas, literacy skills and biology, and teach from a middle school to GRE level both subject areas. One passionate teacher, who valued hard work over talent, inspired me to become a scientist and I hope that I can be that teacher for another student.
I am currently pursuing my Masters in Public Health at Columbia University's Mailman School of Public Health. I received my B.A. in Psychology and Environmental Studies at Wesleyan University. In high school, I was selected by my teachers to tutor classmates in Chemistry, Physics, and Geometry. I helped students with homework problems and with test preparation (both for in-class exams and for the SAT Subject Tests). As an undergraduate, I was a teaching assistant for introductory Russian, and worked with students both in group and in individual sessions. My academic background is varied, and thus I am able to tutor students in a range of topics, including Environmental Science, Biology, Psychology, Statistics, French, Russian, English Language and Literature, and exam preparation (SAT, ACT, AP and GRE). My favorite topics to tutor in are Biology and Environmental Science, since I love sharing my interest in the science and using it to help students better understand and enjoy these exciting fields. My teaching philosophy is best summarized as "show not tell" -- I find that guiding students such that they can arrive at the answers themselves, rather than just explaining the problem, helps them fully realize their potential for success. When I'm not learning or teaching, I spend my time reading, running and baking.
I am a sophomore at Wesleyan University, double majoring in Chemistry and Film Studies. I am extremely dedicated to helping my students, pushing to help maximize their potential. Although I can assist in numerous fields, I primarily hold a passion toward chemistry. In my time tutoring students from various academic and social backgrounds, I maintain an overarching goal of creating a safe and comfortable learning environment, which in turn allows my students to harness their full potential. I firmly uphold the belief of understanding over memorization, placing priority toward a student's ability to learn and comprehend over cramming. In my free time, I enjoy reading fantasy and the routine nighttime walk.
I am a graduate of Wesleyan University. I received my dual Bachelor of Arts in English and U.S History. I then pursued a master's degree in education (Curriculum and Instruction). Since then, I have traveled extensively, creating genuine relationships with people from all over the world. These experiences have heavily influenced my approach to life-long learning and the use of differentiation strategies for learners from all walks of life. Comprehensive literacy for all, is my true passion. Whether it has been in a classroom filled with elementary/middle school students or helping students of all ages prepare for Standardized Tests, my professional and volunteer work illustrates the lengths to which I have gone to make this dream a reality for many learners. It has been my honor to impart the value of literacy to all of my students. In my leisure time, you can be sure to find me with a cup of warm tea in hand, glued to a good book, singing karaoke, trying out new recipes or laughing and traveling with family and friends.
Strategic, high-energy, confident professional bridging the gap between goals and accomplishments
I'm a writer with a degree from Wesleyan University and a background in humanities tutoring. I cover European, World, and US history, as well as writing, reading comp, and literature topics. I've been a writing mentor and a course grader at the college level, and have more than three years experience working with high school and middle school students - everything from homework help to college application essays. I also do GRE and SAT verbal section prep. In my spare time, I have strong opinions on film and television, drink a lot of tea, and travel as much as I can.
I received my BA from Wesleyan University in 2020 with Honors in Philosophy and Phi Beta Kappa. I spent one year abroad studying Philosophy, Politics, and Economics at Oxford University. Having met stages one and two of Wesleyan's general education requirements, I have excelled in humanities, social sciences, and natural sciences so am able to provide assistance in a wide variety of subjects.Having peer-reviewed many papers in university, I am especially adept at workshopping essays in various departments (including philosophy, literature, psychology, history, and sociology). I also have experience tutoring high school math (geometry, algebra, pre-calculus) and am willing to tutor younger students as well.I am highly adaptable to the needs of the student and am quite good at adapting my style and vocabulary to who I am interacting with. Ultimately, my goal is to have the student be able to teach the material to me in a cogent manner. I accomplish this in part by asking the right questions rather than simply giving answers. I have experience working with non-native English speakers so have grown accustomed to speaking in ways that others can understand.Outside of academia I enjoy reading books, watching films, singing, playing the piano and guitar, getting exercise, and going to Maine. My passions are acting and Russian literature.
Hi! My name is Yasemin and I am a graduate of top liberal arts college Wesleyan University where I majored in Neuroscience and Behavior and German Studies. I currently work as a Clinical Research Coordinator at Ichan School of Medicine at Mount Sinai Hospital. I am passionate about helping others and have held numerous tutoring positions teaching students from elementary school to college level. I am particularly interested in the sciences and German, and excited to help make a difference!
Mr. Chen was my first Mandarin Chinese teacher. He arrived to teach in the 1990s at St. Paul's School, a New England boarding school. As a non-native speaker of Chinese, I sat in Mr. Chen's class behind a desk and studied Chinese. At that time, I was confused and considered dropping the course. But Mr. Chen took me aside and said through hard work and discipline, I could learn the language. This talk inspired me to continue studying. In college, Chinese became more challenging. I had to take dictations, tests, and quizzes. I had to work with other students on skits and dialogues. In the evenings, I listened over and over again to Chinese language audio tapes, and made flash cards for the hundreds of characters we studied. Again, I considered quitting. However, Ms. Liu, my college Chinese teacher encouraged me to go to China. I took her advice and decided to take a year-off to live in Beijing. When I arrived that first time in Beijing, I even had trouble getting to my hotel. But after one summer in China, I was speaking Chinese at a high level of proficiency. I thought in Chinese throughout the day, and even had dreams where I spoke Chinese in the dream. After returning to the U.S. in 2006, I applied to the Chinese Flagship Program at The Ohio State University and won a scholarship from the Department of Defense. The program was a great fit, as I sought greater Chinese language proficiency. During the first year of the Flagship Program, I worked with a mentor, developing expertise in the domain of Chinese media from its earliest beginnings during the Communist revolution, through the Maoist period, and finally to its current state. We also devoted time to reading Chinese short stories, such as Lu Xun's "The True Story of Ah Q" and "A Madman's Diary." Reading these classics, along with reading about China's media gave me better appreciation for the Chinese language, as well as China's history and culture. After the Flagship program, I learned that my true passion for the language and culture would be best expressed through teaching and tutoring. I have spent years studying and learning Chinese and have reached fluency. I view teaching and tutoring as a way to give back what I have learned. Whether it is a particular grammar construction or the use of a particular verb, the moment when it clicks in a student's head and they understand what you are saying is a special moment for any teacher. This past year, I enrolled in a Master of Arts teaching program at Brandeis University. The program is unique in that it specializes in teaching Chinese. There are very few schools in the U.S. which train students to become Chinese teachers. This spring I taught two Chinese classes at Boston Latin School. This experience at Boston Latin School was invaluable, as I received hands-on experience in Chinese teaching and tutoring. As a non-native fluent speaker of Chinese, I have many advantages for the language. I can better explain grammar points having had the experience of learning the language in a classroom as they are. I also can serve as an example to other non-native speakers who are learning Chinese and share an understanding of the process. Students will be able to look up to me as an example of someone who has excelled at a difficult language, and I hope to inspire them to continue to study Chinese. My teaching philosophy is that all students are capable of learning Chinese. I tutor with this thought in mind. In this sense, I can be a strict tutor. I will not let my students off easy. I will push them to answer questions correctly. For example, if a student responds to a question with a one word answer, then I will challenge him to respond with a full sentence. At the same time, if I see a student struggling, I will help them. I seek to empower each student to reach fluency through discipline, hard work, and opportunity.Just like Mr. Chen, my high school Mandarin teacher, and all the other teachers who inspired me, I hope my teaching and experience can inspire more young Americans to become successful Chinese language learners.
The best part of teaching is when my student "gets" something, and the light bulb turns on. I teach you how to do something - writing, test-taking, study skills - so you can do it on your own in the future.
I have tutored high school students in math and science for the past four years, and have spent the past year tutoring in organic chemistry. I have worked as teaching assistant for various professors and have assisted college students develop productive studying strategies. I am all too familiar with how difficult organic chemistry is, but I am the rare person who actually loves the subject, and have been exposed to organic chemistry in the classroom and in the laboratory. I am very passionate about science and want to help others enjoy the subjects as much as I do :)Education:Wesleyan University, CT 2018Majors: Neuroscience and Psychology
I am a rising senior at Wesleyan University studying French Language and Literature and Government with a concentration in Political Theory. I'm available to tutor in many subjects including English, Writing, Grammar, Literature, Essay Editing, Social Studies, European History, and varying levels of French. I am a passionate learner, eager to share this passion with students who are in need of any help whatsoever. I am especially excited to tutor students in French. I can recognize more than anyone that learning a second language doesn't always come naturally. I can understand that struggle on a personal level, but with hard work and practice, I truly believe that anyone can succeed in a foreign language! In my spare time I enjoy reading anything and everything, watching foreign films, and shopping!
I am a graduate of Hunter College High School in NYC, and I am currently a sophomore at Wesleyan University majoring in Neuroscience & Behavior. I am also passionate about music and education studies, and I plan to pursue a career in either medicine or education. I have two years of teaching experience, and I have worked with students ranging from Kindergarten to 7th grade. I have experience teaching algebra, geometry, music theory, music history, and basic elementary school math and writing. Before my college campus was shut down, I was designing and teaching a "Creative Science" after school class at a local elementary school. I also taught private flute lessons at Oddfellows Playhouse Youth Theater.I am currently volunteering as a tutor with EduMateNYC, an organization that provides free virtual tutoring to low-income students, I will be a program coordinator in the fall. I am so grateful for the teachers and mentors in my life, and I feel lucky to have the opportunity to have a positive impact on younger students and give back to my community. In addition to helping students stay on track with their schoolwork, I strongly believe in the importance of arts education. Especially during this difficult time, I believe that learning should be fun. I always try to teach in an engaging way and relate the material to the individual student's interests.
I am a graduate of Wesleyan University, where I received my B.A. in African Studies with concentrations in History and Religion. I have two years of professional experience as a math tutor in Richmond, Virginia. I also spent a summer in Nairobi, Kenya, teaching at an all-girls school. I greatly enjoy tutoring both history (and related social studies) and mathematics because I see them as two different ways of telling stories about the world in which we live. Tutoring history means building stories out of a collection of facts, a love of places, peoples, and cultures both near and far that I learned young while describing my family history - with a father from Cape Town, South Africa, and a mother from New Orleans - to others. Tutoring mathematics (and standardized tests) means breaking an idea down to its most basic parts, figuring out why and how it works in a way that brings great improvement in both understanding and practical performance. In my spare time, I love dancing, writing, and Netflix, and never travel on the subway without a good book.
I graduated with honors from the College of Letters at Wesleyan University in 2013. As a part of my undergraduate program of study, I spent a semester at the University of Bologna in Italy and completed a thesis project. While at Wesleyan, I tutored Elementary students and fellow undergraduates. During the year after I graduated, I worked as an English instructor in South Korea. I am comfortable with a wide range of subjects, but I have a particular fondness for history and literature, and I am particularly experienced at helping students with their writing. I'm currently working my way through the required courses to apply to Medical School, and I'm excited to share my newfound passion for the sciences with younger students. I believe that academic success can lead students to personal growth as well as a brighter future. I enjoy helping my students achieve their goals, whether they are seeking to master a subject they find challenging or improve their scores on a standardized test. When I'm not studying (or at the lab) myself, I'm either at dance class, cooking a large meal for my friends, or appreciating the arts at a performance, gallery, or museum.
I hold a bachelor's degree in psychology from Wesleyan University. I was also an AP National Scholar. I consider myself a lifelong learner and believe tutoring is as much about motivation as it is about course material.
