I am a tutor specializing in philosophy with competence in other basic logic-related subjects, like algebra and computer science. I am a physician and medical educator with extensive experience helping students prepare for exams, including certification exams, and completing course work in the health professions. I received my undergraduate degree in neuroscience and biology from Brandeis University in 2009 and my MD from Boston University in 2014. I matched into a competitive general surgery residency, but left to pursue teaching full time. Most of my time has been with paramedic students, but I've worked with students from all areas of medicine and outside medicine. What draws me to teaching is the opportunity to work closely with a student to build both their understanding of a subject and confidence in their abilities; nothing is as rewarding as that moment when a difficult subject "clicks" for a student! I primarily tutor in the life and biomedical sciences, and physiology is probably my favorite subject to teach (it's so complex and fascinating!), though I do love pharmacology and basic biology, as well. Every student should have the opportunity to feel both successful and challenged, recognizing that an integral part of success is struggle. It is so important to develop and value grit; struggling with a difficult concept or a complex problem is a beneficial process that leads to true learning. Because of this belief, I am enthusiastic about new approaches to mathematics in K-12 education, in particular. In place of rote memorization, Common Core emphasizes creative approaches to problem solving to develop mental math abilities through mathematical thinking and number sense. My strong liberal arts background has also given me great appreciation for and mastery of critical thinking, textual analysis, and articulate writing across subject areas.As a straight-A student my entire life, I hold myself and my students to a very high standard. I've been helping students and friends to edit and revise their writing across multiple styles for seven years. Throughout high school, I was part of an exclusive magnet school for creative writing called the Educational Center for the Arts: in the mornings I took core classes (math, science, history, etc) at a public high school, and in the afternoons I attended college-level workshops in fiction, screenplay, memoir, humor, and poetry. There, I learned from published writers and edited fellow students' pieces, including college essays, for four years while developing my own work.In college, I became the opinion section editor of my student newspaper. Last year, I served as its editor in chief. At The Justice, I've applied the skills I learned from creative writing to journalism and op-ed content. I already had experience clarifying sentences, helping writers develop a unique written voice, and keeping writing concise and precise, but through The Justice I learned how to find and support a strong argument, recognize logical fallacies in one's own thinking as well as in others, and conduct thorough, accurate and credible research. I also learned the AP's grammatical style guides inside and out, though remain a devotee of the Oxford comma.While most of my work in tutoring specifically has been with middle and high school-age students, I've also worked with younger students as a summer camp counselor and a teaching assistant. I am a sophomore at Brandeis University working towards a combined B.A./M.A. in mathematics and a B.S. in physics. I specialize in mathematics as it is my favorite subject to both learn about and to teach others. I have worked with students who I knew well and student that I did not know prior to tutoring them in the past two years in order to help them better understand subjects they struggled with from algebra to calculus. What I enjoy most about tutoring and what motivates to help other students is being able to emphasize the interesting aspects of the subject to counteract the common social stigma that math is boring and inapplicable to many, so that more people having a working understanding and appreciation for the subject. My teaching style is based around first explaining where the relevant topics come from as sufficiently as possible, how and why certain techniques work, and applying all of this to specific examples of varying difficulty. I emphasize gaining an understanding as to why skills and techniques work and how they are useful. This emphasis makes it easier for students to tackle novel problems and retain their knowledge.For physics I tutor in basic physics, the SAT subject test in physics, and AP Physics 1,2& C. For mathematics, I tutor in elementary mathematics, Algebra 1,2,3,4, Geometry, Pre-Calculus, Trigonometry, Calculus 1,2,3 and AP Calculus AB/BC, Multivariable Calculus, SAT math and both SAT math subject tests. Of these subjects, my favorite to tutor are any of the calculus courses since that is my favorite area of mathematics and I find it rewarding to share that interest with others. I found that my ongoing curiosity about different fields of study and my knowledge of history made me a better ESL teacher. For example, if I couldn't think of a synonym for a word or concept, I could offer an example from history or art. I am currently a high school teacher with four-years experience teaching Regents bearing Biology (Living Environment), Chemistry, Ecology, and Earth Science. I completed my undergraduate work at Brandeis University and received a B.S. in Biology, and B.A. in International & Global Studies. I conducted my graduate studies at Fordham University and received an M.S. in Secondary Science Education. I am currently certified in New York State for Biology 7 - 12 and am pursuing a secondary certification in SPED 7 - 12.My approach to tutoring is simple: learning does not come easily if it cannot be made digestible. In this light, I employ a range of techniques to engage and drive my students towards their own litmus of success. I love integrating games, technology, or a points system to support students. If the first approach does not work, I am open and flexible to hearing feedback from the students and their parents in the interest of maximizing student learning.While my background is in secondary science education, my passion is in literacy education. I graduated from Brandeis University with degrees in Classical Studies and Anthropology in 2012, and just received a master's degree in Archaeology from Bryn Mawr College. While in school, I have worked on numerous team projects as well as with younger students just beginning their studies. I spent this past summer working with high school students as a resident counselor at Johns Hopkins University. In the fall, I plan on working in classrooms in the Philadelphia area. I have experience across the humanities, and have a particular love for history. I also understand the importance of preparing for standardized tests, and have found the same critical reading and writing skills needed to score well on them to be invaluable as my education has progressed.I look forward to working with and helping you in any way that I can.

I am a senior at Brandeis University. I am on the pre-health track majoring in Health: Science, Society, and Policy and Biology and minoring in Hispanic Studies. I am also President of a Brandeis Volunteers Around the World, which aims to bring volunteering opportunities to students at Brandeis, as well as providing services to underserved countries internationally. In addition, I am also a part of General Tutoring in which I voluntarily tutor a high school sophomore every week in mathematics. Although I am comfortable in tutoring a variety of subjects, I am most interested in Mathematics and Science. From my experience in teaching, I have found that the most successful method for a student's success is additional practice. I believe that every student has the opportunity for success given the appropriate resources. My future plans include attending medical school and my hobbies include biking and reading.
