I am a great tutor because when I am finished tutoring a student, they not only get their work done, they understand the concept they were having trouble with. I tutored at Austin Community College for two years, I taught Secondary Mathematics for three years, and I taught at a career school for over 3 years, where I taught College Algebra, among other general education courses.

I received a degree in Business Administration but my first love has always been to teach and help others! There is no greater joy then helping someone else achieve their goals. I worked many years in the financial sector before moving into special education. I enjoy all subjects but have a passion for math and I enjoy sharing my love of math with others. I have tutored both adults and children in math, reading and writing.

I am a graduate of Cal Poly San Luis Obispo and Liberty University and currently work at IU Health as a pediatric staff chaplain. I earned a Bachelor of Science in Animal Science from Cal Poly and a Master of Divinity from Liberty. Throughout university, graduate school, and beyond, I tutored students in various subjects, focusing mostly on SAT and ACT test prep. While I have tutored students in test prep, sciences, math, and English, my favorite subject to tutor is study skills. I have found that every one of my students has benefitted from spending at least some time addressing study skills and organization so that they can maximize their academic potential. When my students have begun to gain some confidence in this area, they begin to gain confidence overall, which I love to see. As with chaplaincy, my approach to tutoring is to meet people where they are and help them identify skills and gifts within them to help them succeed. When my students struggle in an area, we work at that area at their pace until they understand the concept. My focus is to meet them where they are (rather than spending time worrying about how they got there), so I can help them achieve the most they can with the time we have.

Frequently Asked Questions

Tutors who attended California State Polytechnic University-Pomona bring deep subject matter expertise combined with real-world experience. Many graduated from rigorous engineering, agriculture, business, and STEM programs where they mastered complex material. Beyond their academic credentials, these tutors understand Cal Poly Pomona's curriculum, teaching style, and expectations—giving them insight into how to help current students succeed in the same challenging coursework they completed.

An alumnus tutor has already walked the path your student is on. They know which concepts are typically the hardest, what professors emphasize on exams, and how to approach Cal Poly Pomona's project-based and hands-on learning style. This insider perspective means they can anticipate struggles and explain material in ways that click with how the university teaches. Your student also benefits from someone who understands the specific demands and culture of Cal Poly Pomona's academics.

Given Cal Poly Pomona's strong engineering, agriculture, and technical programs, tutors from the university excel in subjects like calculus, physics, chemistry, programming, thermodynamics, circuits, and agricultural science. Many also teach business, economics, and general education subjects. Since these tutors have completed upper-level coursework in their majors, they're particularly effective at breaking down complex technical material and connecting foundational concepts to real-world applications—something Cal Poly Pomona emphasizes throughout its curriculum.

Absolutely. Varsity Tutors connects current Cal Poly Pomona students with alumni tutors who understand exactly what they're going through. This is especially valuable for challenging courses like organic chemistry, differential equations, or major-specific technical classes. An alumnus tutor can share strategies they used to master the same material, offer perspective on long-term applications, and provide encouragement from someone who's already succeeded in the program.

Cal Poly Pomona's learn-by-doing approach requires students to master fundamentals while applying them to real projects and labs. Personalized 1-on-1 instruction allows tutors to focus on your student's specific gaps—whether that's foundational math skills, programming logic, or lab report writing—and pace material to their learning speed. This targeted support is especially valuable before midterms, finals, or major project deadlines when students need focused help to excel.

Varsity Tutors considers your student's subject, course level, learning style, and specific challenges when connecting them with a tutor. If Cal Poly Pomona alumni background is important to you, we can match your student with a tutor who graduated from the university and has expertise in the exact subject needed. The goal is finding a tutor who understands your student's goals and the specific demands of their coursework.

Results depend on the student's starting point and commitment, but personalized instruction has been shown to significantly improve understanding and grades in challenging subjects. Students working with tutors who understand Cal Poly Pomona's curriculum often gain confidence, improve exam performance, and develop stronger problem-solving skills. Many also find that having someone explain difficult concepts in a patient, one-on-one setting transforms their relationship with challenging material.
