I received my PhD in mathematics from Drexel University in 2019. I really enjoyed teaching as a graduate student, and working as a tutor here seems like a nice way to get back into it. Before graduate school, I went to Johns Hopkins. I started out as a "chemical and biomolecular engineering" major, but then ended up switching to a double major in math and electrical engineering. I graduated with a BA in math and MS in electrical engineering. From there, I went to Drexel University to write and defend my dissertation in mathematics, which was about two unsolved problems in linear algebra. While in Johns Hopkins and Drexel University, I ended up teaching a lot of math and a bit of science not only as a tutor, but also as a teaching assistant and as a primary instructor. Since then, I've been working as a mathematician; I worked as a postdoctoral researcher in the Free University of Brussels for one year, and then as a research scientist at the Air Force Research Lab in Dayton, Ohio for two years. It's been a rewarding career, but I have missed teaching. When it comes to teaching, I try my best to take a flexible approach and meet students where they are. I am a big believer in the power of intuition and curiosity, so I try to teach in a way that nurtures both. I find that it is important not only to know how to get from problem statement to solution, but also to have some understanding of why the pieces fit together the way they do. Besides math and teaching, I enjoy singing, playing piano, playing online chess, and doing the New York Times crossword (and other word games). Lately, I've been trying to get back into running and yoga.

I firmly believe that learning should be enjoyable for students. At times, it will be challenging and boring, but the overall process ought to be somewhat exciting and satisfying. Not all educators have the ability to create an enjoyable learning environment this could be due to large class sizes, limited class time, lack of resources, or inadequate training. I knew that science would be my general topic of interest when I first entered college (many years back), but I didn't want to restrict myself to a single specialized field of engineering, so physics, the root of all engineering disciplines, was my obvious choice. After working in the aerospace industry for a couple of years (gyroscopes and spacecraft re-entry tracking), I returned to school for a master's degree in biomedical engineering. That field is ever-changing and never-ending; what a blast! In 2009 I added a teaching credential (physics and math) to my resume and have been teaching in the classroom and tutoring students one-on-one since then. Actually, my first experience with tutoring was helping my daughters and their friends with their high school math years ago. I learned even then the satisfaction of seeing students "see the light" on some topic that had previously eluded them or simply gaining confidence as they repeated and internalized techniques which allowed them to solve difficult problems on their own. It is a shame that all students cannot learn from a teacher in one-on-one settings or at least in small groups of mutually trusting and motivated classmates. This encourages students to feel comfortable in asking questions and also gives the teacher the advantage of eye contact and body language reading to encourage repeats or different approaches to the material at hand. After working as a physical therapist for several years, I continued practicing and earned my Doctor of Physical Therapy in 2014. I have been a clinical instructor to numerous physical therapy students. In addition, I taught Therapeutic Exercise and Therapeutic Modalities & Pharmacology as an adjunct professor for athletic training students. Because I had experience in opening two physical therapy clinics for a hospital employer and a private practice employer, I decided to utilize that experience to open my own independent physical therapy practice in 2015. After earning my NASM Personal Training Certification and pursuing specializations in Fitness Nutrition and Corrective Exercise, I closed my physical therapy practice in 2021 to focus on my current wellness business. I have passed the NATA-BOC, NATA, NASM-CPT, NASM-FNS, and NASM-CES exams on the first attempt. I know how to prepare, study, and pass professional exams! I currently assist with coaching a USATF XC & Track team; however, I miss teaching academically. I am excited to join the Varsity Tutor platform to teach and mentor students who are interested in athletic training, physical therapy, personal training, and nutrition. I am a gym-rat and an endurance junkie! I workout almost 2 hour every day because I love how exercise increases my energy.
