Hi, my name is Emily. I graduated with honors from Georgetown University with a degree in Comparative Literature, Linguistics and Chinese. I am passionate about all things language, from the measly article to the next great American Novel. While working for a while in the private sector and as a freelancer abroad, I realized that what I was truly passionate about was mentoring and teaching people, sharing my love of language and literature. Thus far, I have worked with English as a Second Language learners in Taipei, and worked as a freelance English Editor of resumes, college application essays, cover letters and more. As a tutor, I am always looking for new fun and creative ways to engage students in the material, to help them see the ins and outs of how language is put together whether its a sentence or a five-paragraph persuasive essay. My academic background in linguistics and comparative literature provide not only a grounding in the English language and the finer points of grammatical analysis, but also gives me a foundation in literary theory. I am well equipped to work with students through the analysis of dense passages of fiction and non-fiction, as well as parse out any grammatical and usage errors they may have. This gives students the opportunity to understand the how and why of language as opposed to simply memorizing arbitrary rules. Finally, with a Chinese minor from Georgetown and a Test of Chinese as a Foreign Language (TOCFL) proficiency of 5 (fluent), and having learned Chinese myself as a foreign language, I feel equipped to help beginner to intermediate learners of Chinese accomplish their language goals in reading, writing, speaking, and listening. I have participated and observed in many language classrooms and am prepared with strategies to overcome common problems in Mandarin learning (the characters, the tones, the "lack of" grammar etc.).Outside of tutoring, I am still dedicated to education and am pursuing a masters of education at the Relay Graduate School of Education. When not thinking about how to further knowledge in the next generation I enjoy cooking, dancing, and watching foreign cinema.Ultimately, what is most important is putting the improvement of the student first, and to that end I am always receptive to comments and suggestions. Please do not hesitate to ask questions, we cannot learn without inquiry!

I graduated from Georgetown University in May 2020 with a B.A. in Psychology and Business Administration. My biggest passion is writing, and I have owned a successful lifestyle blog for five years now, and I also love taking on writing opportunities with various digital brands and magazines.I absolutely love helping students craft essays that are well-written, organized, and still feel uniquely THEM. That's where I come in!In addition to essay writing, I have tutored students in English, Math, and Psychology, and I have worked with dozens of students between the age of 8 and 20.I love bringing a playful approach to learning, and I really believe the key to success in any subject is finding ways to make it fun.I am so excited to coach you on the way to uncovering your fullest potential in whatever subject you are working to improve in!

Hi! My name is Ari. I was born, raised, and currently live in Brookline, MA, but I am a student at Georgetown University's School of Foreign Service. I take pride in being a jack-of-all-trades when it comes to academia. I have experience tutoring across the gamut of academic subjects, including in English as a Foreign Language and in Mandarin Chinese. With each of my past tutees I have worked to not only enhance their understanding of the curriculum, but also to help them find the motivation, study skills, discipline and joy that are necessary to truly excel in the classroom. I would be thrilled to bring that attitude to work with your student; I believe that good teaching means "working with" rather than "talking at," and that students thrive when they get a personal touch from a devoted tutee who can bring learning to life for them. If you give me the chance to be that teacher for your student, I promise you won't regret it.

I am a BS in Biochemistry and recent graduate from a very rigorous program at Georgetown University where I have taken the first-year medical school curriculum (scoring in the top 2% of the class), receiving a Master's of Science degree in Physiology and Biophysics. Ever since I was a child, I have been wildly inquisitive. I was the annoying classmate who always raised their hand and had to know why everything was the way it is and worked the way it did before we moved on. My tutoring style works the same way. I do *not* believe in memorization and have textbooks as clear as yesterday engrained in my head years after learning them is because of taking time to break concepts down to their simplest ideas and building upwards. By breaking complex concepts into their basic subunits, and explaining the purpose of each unit and how and why it works, it creates connections in the brain (schema) and writes into long term memory. Most of my students have mastered concepts so much, after getting an A in their class, they went on to tutor the subject themselves. My expertise lies in the premedical and science curriculum: Chemistry (general, organic, and physical); Biology (general, cell, and molecular); Biochemistry and Metabolism; Physics (1 and 2); Math (precalculus to calculus 3); and SAT/GRE/MCAT prep. Having a strong background in all of these subjects is invaluable in a tutor, because there is an immense amount of crossing over in the sciences. Without math, you cannot understand physics or chemistry, and without chemistry, you cannot master biology. With my help, I will ensure you have true mastery of all of your material as well.Aside from the sciences, I have a deep love for classical music (particularly the Romantic era), and am a competitive pianist and composer. I also love to garden (feel free to ask for pictures any time) and have recently fundraised and planted a rose garden for a DC homeless shelter I play piano for every week (as part of their sound empowerment program).I look forward to working with you!

I have an undergraduate degree from Georgetown University and a graduate degree from Boston College. I received my Bachelor of Arts from Georgetown with a major in History and a minor in Government. I focused on both U.S. and Middle Eastern history at Georgetown, and was invited to write an Honors thesis for the History department my senior year. After graduating from Georgetown, I began my studies at Boston College where I received a Master of Education in Curriculum and Instruction. I am now a history teacher at a public school in Massachusetts, where I teach U.S. History I and II, as well as Modern U.S. History. Not surprisingly, my favorite subject to teach and to tutor is History. I am most passionate about the history of the U.S. since 1945, but as I am sure most of my students will attest, I truly do find the history of any nation or time period fascinating. I also enjoy teaching and tutoring for the SATs and other standardized exams, in part because I believe that any student can improve once he or she knows how to study, and most importantly, how to build the endurance to take a standardized test as lengthy as the SAT. I approach the SATs much in the same way that I approach running – if unit tests in school are one-mile warm-ups, then the SAT is a marathon. With the right training (and dedication), I firmly believe that any student can improve. I have taught SAT prep classes in a variety of capacities. I worked for a major SAT prep company while in graduate school, and also piloted my district’s SAT prep course (which I designed the curricula for). I take a collaborative approach to teaching, and both in the classroom and one-on-one, I believe that the best way for a student to learn material is to move beyond recall and work toward synthesis and analysis for complete understanding. When I’m not teaching or tutoring, I love to read history books (especially those about Robert Kennedy), run (long distances – in all types of weather), and travel. The most incredible place I have been is Tanzania – if I hadn’t packed three massive Teddy Roosevelt biographies in my suitcase, I definitely would have brought home many more souvenirs.

I believe in the growth mindset, meaning that every student has the capacity to achieve and grow. I tell my students that I believe in them, and that with hard work and my support, they can achieve and even exceed their goals. When students believe this as well, they are more motivated to work hard because they believe that hard work begets results.I think it is critical to build a relationship with my students, so that I can identify the methods and strategies that will be most effective for them. I begin by getting to know my students on a personal level, learning about their passions, what motivates them, what frustrates them, and which learning strategies have been successful for them. I believe I need to earn their trust by being on time, prepared, and consistent in my work as a tutor. By building this personal relationship, I have the information I need to customize our tutoring experiences in a way that will be most effective for my students. My professional experience is varied; I run a business bringing creative problem-solving to education. I am currently teaching a college course, I was a 7th grade English teacher, and I have worked as a marketing executive and design thinking consultant, and own my own business. I bring my rich experiences to sessions, which helps me identify creative ways of delivering and explaining material.Perhaps most importantly, I truly love to learn. I believe that learning can and should be a joyful experience, and that when students enjoy learning - even productive struggle - they succeed. I bring relentless optimism, positive energy, and humor to my sessions.

My name is Kara and I received my M.S. in Physiology and Biophysics from Georgetown University and my M.D. from New York Medical College. I enjoy helping students out with most science topics, from high school Biology courses to preparing for the ACT, SAT, or MCAT. This includes Biology, Psychology, Anatomy, Physiology, and more. I work with students to develop effective study methods that work best for the ways in which they learn. The key is to not only learn information, but to retain it. I also enjoy working with young students who may need help with reading, writing, science, and pre-algebra. My tutoring sessions will give students the practice and understanding needed to excel in their coursework. Outside of tutoring, I enjoy playing tennis, cooking, catching up on new TV shows, and spending time with my family!

I am a graduate from Georgetown University, where I received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Mathematics with a minor in Music. I'm currently pursuing a Master's of Science in Business Analytics at Carnegie Mellon University. I've been tutoring since I started high school, focusing on mathematics and writing. Throughout my college career I was employed both privately and by Georgetown University to tutor peers and high school students in the Washington, D.C. area. I worked with students taking classes in all levels of mathematics falling under Algebra, Calculus, Combinatorics, and Problem Solving.I've always been passionate about mathematics. With a strong academic background in English and writing, I communicate abstract mathematical ideas in a way that is best suited to each of my students' needs. At some point in the (hopefully) near future, I'd like to go to back to school in order to then work full-time as a college professor of mathematics.Aside from academics, I'm passionate about music and soccer. I've been a guitarist for most of my life, and am eager to pick up and learn about any instrument I can get my hands on. I've also played soccer for about as long as I can remember. Most recently, I play in pickup leagues around Pittsburgh. In college, I was fortunate enough to captain the Georgetown University Men's Club Soccer team for two years.Thank you, and best of luck in your academic endeavors!

I've been preparing students to take GMAT and GRE exams for over 4 years. I work best with students who are looking for intense preparation and can commit to at least 2 hours a day of work. I create a structured curriculum tailored to each individual student. I've always enjoyed coaching students to take tests, because I can help them realize how to find patterns, crack codes and see the whole structure behind the puzzle. Getting better at tests is like any other sport. You have to train better, become efficient, increase confidence and develop basic skills that sharpen your thinking.
