Learning requires active involvement and attentively engaging with the material. This process can be at times frustrating and challenging, but ultimately a gratifying feeling. Opening a text book and feeling the increasing anxiety as you flip through unknown pages of what can only be viewed as a new language can repress the learning process. Nearly everyone at one point in their life feels overwhelmed and demurred about a specific subject. This feeling push someone away from learning something new and truly affect their ability to grow. I can understand this and have dealt with this in my own learning process.As an aspiring physician and an avid science lover, I am interested in not only medical science, but also ecology, evolution, biotechnology, and other related fields. I recall the difficulty of wrapping my head around specific concepts in chemistry, physics, and biology classes. My early struggles were amplified by my lackluster enthusiasm to understand why even this knowledge was relevant. Often times I would feel disconnected with what I was learning. This issue affected my foundational knowledge in sciences and it took me time to realize that without understanding the basics it becomes seemingly impossible to incur further knowledge. It is evident that many concepts are a continuum and by building upon previous knowledge can help consolidate new information. I find this as a paradigm in my learning philosophy; to thoroughly understand an essential point before moving on to the next subject. By retaining the foundational knowledge, it is much easier to apply and visit new, complex, information. Moreover, I believe learning is parceled into various tasks from listening, reading, writing, practicing and ultimately teaching to fully understand and retain new information. This is known as the ‘learning pyramid’ and can be very useful as a template.I constantly apply the ‘learning pyramid’ throughout my studies, beginning with attentive hearing at the basic level and reinforcing the subject material by reading and writing notes. After I felt confident with handling the material, group discussions can help reconsolidate the details and further solidify the major points. I truly believe that group work, used correctly, can help facilitate comprehension. This strategy was useful during my masters at Georgetown University, an accelerated one year program, which focused on physiology and biophysics aligning with the medical school curriculum. I was able to excel in the system-based modules by utilizing a steady academic focus alone and supplemented with group discussions between 3 to 4 students. During these group discussions, I realized the influence of teaching my fellow peers on improving my own interpretation. This marked the beginning of my interests in tutoring, specifically subjects that I am enthusiastic about. These include chemistry, biochemistry, physiology, anatomy, pathophysiology, and other science based subjects.My fellow group members and I would teach each other the material, we would practice explaining out individual thought process. This method enabled an active learning process with an emphasis on the main point plus important details. As a tutor, I would emphasize the major points and push my student to ask questions, be attentive, and then be able to successfully teach me. The learning process can be difficult at times, as I explained earlier, can push a student away from an interesting and exciting subject. I approach the SATs much in the same way that I approach running – if unit tests in school are one-mile warm-ups, then the SAT is a marathon. I worked for a major SAT prep company while in graduate school, and also piloted my district’s SAT prep course (which I designed the curricula for). I hold a B.A. in Comparative Literature from Princeton University and an M.A. from Georgetown University in Arabic Studies/Middle East Studies. I'm currently working on my second masters degree in Mass Communications and Journalism at ASU's Walter Cronkite School.I would love to tutor students working on any of the following subjects: PSAT Critical Reading, PSAT Writing Skills, SAT Critical Reading, SAT Subject Test in Literature, SAT Verbal, TOEFL, AP English Language and Composition, AP English Literature and Composition, College Essays, Essay Editing, Grammar and Mechanics, Literature, Reading, Writing, Arabic, and European History.Here's a little bit more information about my background -- I'm currently a Teaching Assistant at ASU, where I work closely with undergraduate students on improving their writing and critical thinking skills. Before coming to ASU, I taught undergraduate humanities and English literature courses. I have also served as an SAT Prep instructor for the verbal and writing sections of the SAT. I really like working with students on the verbal and writing portions of the SAT because I find that, when approached the right way, these sections of the test are a lot of fun.In terms of my teaching philosophy, I like to keep things as active as possible. I think it's important that students feel they are engaged in a dynamic process; I view tutoring much like a conversation. If students have questions, I always want to hear them. I think in tutoring, when both the student and the tutor contribute, there's a great exchange.I'm originally from the East Coast, the Philadelphia area. I lived in the Middle East for four years for my work. In my free time, I like to stay active. I love exercising. Running, hiking, and going to the gym are all great. I am a big believer that physical activity helps clear the mind and restore focus. I also love coffee and going to coffee shops.I look forward to meeting you soon for tutoring. I've always liked to travel and to know people from different countries. I've always felt that we are all alike, in spite of our "differences". I have friends from around the world, from travelling and from my jobs in international departments of publishing companies, which is where I have worked for over 20 years. I lived in England for 10 years and loved living in Europe, where I was able to reach so many different countries. I majored in French in college, starting to learn it at the age of 10 years. I became a big fan of French history, literature, films, food and people. I've taught ESL for about 6 years, to people from different countries and I love to help my students learn to use a tool that will help them in their work, studies, and lives and will make a big difference to their happiness!I love cooking, growing plants and vegetables, listening to vintage rock music, cooking new recipes, seeing films, going to concerts of classical music and rock music, and singing.

I'm a dedicated educator with experience in public, private and international education. I attended Georgetown University and the University of Chicago and have a genuine passion for helping students achieve academic success.I have taught a variety of subjects from 8th-12th grade, including AP US Government and Economics, IB Economics, IB World History, and IB Theory of Knowledge. In addition, I have 5 years experience as Senior Advisor to 12th grade students, both in public and private schools, which involved substantial assistance with college applications and personal essay editing.My extracurricular experience includes coaching the chess club at two schools, directing the Model United Nations team, and teaching guitar.I have tutored SATs in school and LSATs with a private company. Prior to becoming an educator I practiced law for 6 years.

I am a retired orthopedic surgeon who had been in clinical practice for close to 40 years before retiring. I did my undergraduate training at the University of Southern California (go Trojans) graduating with a BS in Biology. I attended the Georgetown University School of Medicine and went on to specialty training in Orthopedic Surgery at UC San Francisco finishing up with the United States Army Medical Corp with the rank of Major. I have been practicing orthopedic surgery since then until retirement. In surgery, there has always been the saying "see one, do one, TEACH one. Education has always been important in my family; and all four of my kids are graduates of the UC system. They all experienced the trials and tribulations of SATs, National Merit, AP courses, etc. In my spare time I have built lifted off-road four wheel drive vehicles, every desktop computer we have owned from components, have mastered unusual computer programs such as AutoCad, and have welded together a utility trailer that even passed California inspection. I plan to learn a musical instrument. The big advantage I would have in the subject matter of human anatomy, biology and physiology is the fact that there is no closer proximity to the subject matter than having actually working on the anatomy when the anatomy is still alive.
