As a professor at Boston University, my favorite part of the job has been working with students one-on-one. I love taking the time to go deeply into a subject with a learner and help him or her discover what makes it fascinating. Working on writing is another aspect of educating that I love; to draw out ideas, to make them clearer and more forceful, is very rewarding to me, and I love reading drafts and seeing the development of an argument or an original insight.I began working with students after I completed my BA at Georgetown University and went into a Master's program at NYU in Religious Studies. As a teaching assistant, I had the opportunity to talk to students about their papers and exams, and I discovered that I had a knack for getting people to relax and get into a subject, possibly because I love to tell corny jokes. While earning my PhD at Columbia University, I continued teaching, but I missed the more intimate setting of the small groups and office hours of NYU. I am excited to get back to working one-on-one as a tutor who helps with college essays, English grammar and composition, and edits essays of all kinds.

I am a graduate of Georgetown University, holding a Master of Public Policy, a top 10 STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) program nationally. Originally from China, I am now based in the US and have worked with researchers, NGOs, and international organizations to solve real-world problems. My subjects include GRE Quantitative, GRE, Math, Coding and Programming, and Chinese. Due to my practical experience, I believe that the most effective way to study is "learning by doing." I will create real-world scenarios and help students understand how to leverage their skills, thereby gaining a sense of accomplishment. Games, debates, and other interactive activities are also important for students to like the subject and improve their grades. I am confident that I have the capability and patience to be an amazing tutor. My Master's degree is data-heavy, and I accepted the rigorous training in advanced data analytics, statistical modeling, and programming. I was also a tutor for middle school students in Science and Math, meaning I can not only understand the difficult jargon, but also explain it in plain language. While pursuing my degree, I was a Chinese teaching assistant for undergraduates. By designing the curriculum independently, I helped students understand Chinese society from the economy, diplomacy, and family transformation. I am looking forward to meeting you all!

I am a retired orthopedic surgeon who had been in clinical practice for close to 40 years before retiring. I did my undergraduate training at the University of Southern California (go Trojans) graduating with a BS in Biology. I attended the Georgetown University School of Medicine and went on to specialty training in Orthopedic Surgery at UC San Francisco finishing up with the United States Army Medical Corp with the rank of Major. I have been practicing orthopedic surgery since then until retirement. In surgery, there has always been the saying "see one, do one, TEACH one. Education has always been important in my family; and all four of my kids are graduates of the UC system. They all experienced the trials and tribulations of SATs, National Merit, AP courses, etc. In my spare time I have built lifted off-road four wheel drive vehicles, every desktop computer we have owned from components, have mastered unusual computer programs such as AutoCad, and have welded together a utility trailer that even passed California inspection. I plan to learn a musical instrument. The big advantage I would have in the subject matter of human anatomy, biology and physiology is the fact that there is no closer proximity to the subject matter than having actually working on the anatomy when the anatomy is still alive.

I have experience tutoring students in both the SAT and the SSAT. While I offer tutoring in a broad range of subjects from foreign languages to grammar and writing to math and science, I find Physics to be the most enjoyable subject to teach. I see Physics as the science that allows all the other sciences to occur, and I find it helpful to use Physics demonstrations when studying the subject. When it comes to tutoring, I believe that whoever is doing the talking is doing the learning, so my students will be doing the leg work when it comes to their learning. I believe in the growth mindset, meaning that every student has the capacity to achieve and grow. I tell my students that I believe in them, and that with hard work and my support, they can achieve and even exceed their goals. When students believe this as well, they are more motivated to work hard because they believe that hard work begets results.I think it is critical to build a relationship with my students, so that I can identify the methods and strategies that will be most effective for them. I begin by getting to know my students on a personal level, learning about their passions, what motivates them, what frustrates them, and which learning strategies have been successful for them. I believe I need to earn their trust by being on time, prepared, and consistent in my work as a tutor. By building this personal relationship, I have the information I need to customize our tutoring experiences in a way that will be most effective for my students. My professional experience is varied; I run a business bringing creative problem-solving to education. I am currently teaching a college course, I was a 7th grade English teacher, and I have worked as a marketing executive and design thinking consultant, and own my own business. I bring my rich experiences to sessions, which helps me identify creative ways of delivering and explaining material.Perhaps most importantly, I truly love to learn. I believe that learning can and should be a joyful experience, and that when students enjoy learning - even productive struggle - they succeed. I really enjoy working with people to break up challenging concepts into small and digestible pieces. I know the value in one-on-one help when trying to understanding a topic that one might find difficult, and would be happy to be there to answer any and all questions.I have had informal tutoring experience, as well as jobs as a ski instructor and camp counselor working with kids. Additionally, my on-campus job is in tech support, and since they did all their own training the only real criteria for hiring was the ability to explain complicated processes in simple terms. Unfortunately, we were all sent home from Georgetown due to Corona, this I have a lot of spare time this semester and would love to spend it helping students who might need a little extra attention!I am currently studying physics and economics at Georgetown University. Both subjects, especially physics, require a high-level math understanding. Most importantly, the require one to be very confident in all previous math learned for a strong foundation to build upon for new concepts. I have always been told by teachers that my submitted explanations for problems done in their class were neat and easy to follow. As a side note, due to my course of study, I have long been the first message sent when my friends need help with any math involved in their classes. Please feel free to reach out if you would like any more information or to see if I would be a good fit. 4+ Years Tutoring

I've been preparing students to take GMAT and GRE exams for over 4 years. I work best with students who are looking for intense preparation and can commit to at least 2 hours a day of work. I create a structured curriculum tailored to each individual student. I've always enjoyed coaching students to take tests, because I can help them realize how to find patterns, crack codes and see the whole structure behind the puzzle. Getting better at tests is like any other sport. You have to train better, become efficient, increase confidence and develop basic skills that sharpen your thinking.

I enjoy being on the other side of education as a tutor while still improving my own understanding of the subject.Upon graduating from college, I developed tutoring skills while helping high school students prepare for their SAT II Subject Exams, covering wide ranges including math, biology, and chemistry. I was responsible for elaborating on answers using relevant figures and innovative examples, creating catchy mnemonics, and solving problems from students' point of view. As a tutor, I remained accessible but maintained an appropriate distance to earn students' respect, and five out of ten students improved their scores by more than 200 points. Through these teaching experiences, I have learned not only to become a teacher from the students' perspective, but also what it takes to be an effective educational provider and a mentor. While taking six medical school courses throughout my graduate school program, I have been able to practice and enhance teaching methods by organizing study groups that regularly conducted review sessions before exams, highlighting important concepts made during the lectures, sharing concise notes and outlines, bringing up pertinent and innovative questions, and academically stimulating my peers without any unwelcoming pressures. Through these learning and teaching environments, I have directly experienced what interactive measures really foster healthy learning environments. With these experiences and my avid passion, I am confident I will be a valuable asset to your student.
