I am an undergraduate student at Skidmore College class of 2024. I am a double major in Sociology and Social Work. From an early age in my life, I have had a passion for teaching and always believed in the transformative power of education and knowledge. While I have experience tutoring a range of subjects I have always had a deep connection and interest in social sciences. In my experience tutoring, I have learned that meeting the needs of those seeking to learn and believing in their potential to grow is essential in fueling students and providing them with the tools for critical thinking and learning. I have learned that although I am an educator, I will always learn and grow from those around me.

I am a recent graduate of Skidmore College where I received my Bachelor of Arts in Sociology. I also studied Spanish and Intergroup Relations. I am very passionate about the Spanish language and became fluent in Spanish after spending six months in Buenos Aires, Argentina and six weeks in Atenas, Costa Rica. I have informally tutored both native Spanish-speakers and native English-speakers in English and Spanish. I love to share my passion for Spanish and language with others and help students excel in their practice of the Spanish language. I have also helped students with college essays and grant proposals for funded summer internships.I understand how difficult learning a language can be and know from personal experience that it takes a lot of effort and dedication from both the student and the teacher. As a tutor, I commit to putting in the effort to prepare fun, engaging activities and lessons that make it easier to dedicate one's self to language acquisition. Additionally, I will meet the student where he/she is in his/her learning and tailor lesson plans and tutoring sessions to the personal interests, needs and goals of the student.I strongly believe that we are all each other's teachers in understanding humanity, and I look forward to learning about different perspectives and experiences from students. In my free time, I enjoy hiking, gardening, reading, yoga, natural healing, meeting new people, and trying new things!

Art history has always been my passion, but I also strongly believe in the importance of a diverse, liberal arts education, which I received at my undergrad institution, Skidmore College. At Skidmore I earned my bachelor's degree in art history, where I also studied Classics, anthropology, psychology, history, English, and government, and spent one glorious semester studying abroad in Paris. At Skidmore I gained tutoring experience working as a peer-mentor, art history tutor, note-taker, and providing SAT prep and general homework help, as well as teaching English while studying in Paris. After Skidmore I moved to London where I earned my Master of Arts in art history at the Courtauld Institute of Art. Currently I am pursuing a doctoral degree at Boston University, with a focus on Renaissance art. Primarily I tutor subjects in the humanities, particularly history, English and, naturally, art history, but I also enjoy working with elementary and middle school students in all subjects. I love tutoring art history and introducing students to a discipline that they may not be as familiar with, and also have a passion for American and European history. For me, making a real connection with a student is a crucial part of tutoring. I am incredibly personable, relaxed, and patient and am able to set students at ease. In addition to a having a passion for travel, I love to read, enjoy scrapbooking, rock-climbing, and baking.

The first time I "traveled abroad" was through the enthusiasm and exposure to France from my 6th grade teacher. He showed us a film of Paris and I imagined going there and speaking French. Lessons were fun and easy. Now I have a Bachelor of Arts from Skidmore College in French and Modern Languages. For more than 20 years I have taught French, English and History in after-school programs, on tour coaches for educational student tours, and as a tutor. I have lived and worked in France teaching sports and music to French children in Burgundy and Dordogne regions. I am a certified high school teacher in both French and English from Penn State. My philosophy is to teach in a manner that is fun and accessible to all. Education and knowledge is light that opens up new worlds and opportunities.

As an academically inclined, college educated individual with a host of teaching experience, I would make an ideal tutor in history, political science, and english. I can make a real difference boosting GPAs or standardized test scores! In the summer after my sophomore year at Skidmore College, I was a professional tutor at Lindamood Bell, an individualized national tutoring service aimed at elementary and middle school students. Over my time at Lindamood, I worked with a range of kids, ages 6-15, to improve reading, comprehension and math. At Skidmore, where I double majored in History and Political Science, I was a Peer Mentor, or Teacher's Assistant, for a freshman class on British Naval history. In addition to grading papers, hosting various programs on academic life on campus, and generally being a resource for the first year students, I was given the opportunity to develop a curriculum and teach a class on the historical accounts of Captain James Cook's death on Valentines Day in Hawaii in 1779. Through these experience, I gained all the skills necessary to tutor students of varying levels and on a broad range of subjects.Having graduated college in 2015, I spent the last two years straddling the academic and policy communities working at a think tank called the Atlantic Council in Washington DC. Although I was not tutoring students at the time, I was engaged in the politics of international relations, and enmeshed in the policy and academic literature that serve to strengthen my ability as a tutor and teacher.

My goal is to restore students to a thoroughly self-sufficient status in their academic endeavors, an aim which pursue by focusing on the identification of students' advantages and disadvantages, and attempting to develop a unique plan for each student as to how we might capitalize on their strengths so as to neutralize their difficulties. I first discovered tutoring in college. At first it was just to make some extra money but then I realized there are many benefits to being a tutor. In addition to getting paid to teach, I am constantly learning myself. This happens as I am preparing for tutoring sessions as well as when I am explaining concepts to those who I am teaching.Another aspect of tutoring that I find fulfilling is when is when my students have an "aha! moment." The sudden solidification of ones understanding of a concept is a phenomenon that I enjoy experience myself as well as seeing in others. In addition to tutoring I love playing snowboarding, playing basketball, and hiking.

I worked as a junior golf camp instructor for eight summers during high school and college. During the summer before my junior year of college, I served as a peer mentor to high school students in the Skidmore Pre-College Program. In addition to my skills as a mentor, I was able to hone my tutoring skills by serving as a music and Spanish tutor throughout my studies. During my senior year, I wrote an 80-page thesis titled "Jazz Flamenco: How Political and Cultural Appropriation Created a New Musical Genre," which allowed me to meld my interests in Spanish, music, and writing. While my academic work and mentoring roles were fulfilling, my passion for language and education was truly able to shine through during my senior year, when I designed an independent study course titled "Teaching Methods for Undergraduate Spanish." For this course, I created and implemented lesson plans for an intermediate-level Spanish class. In collaboration with a Skidmore professor, I outlined lesson plans, received direct feedback, and put these plans to practice in the classroom.I have served as a volunteer Freshman Advisor at Harvard for incoming first-year students. I completed an online MicroMasters program through the University of Michigan called "Leading Educational Innovation and Improvement." I've helped high-school students write college papers and tutored them in Latin. Meanwhile, I continually edit my friend's creative writing endeavors.Though I majored in English in college, I was also involved in the Classics and American Studies departments. Whether Ancient, European, or US History, I'm always happy to help anyone with their history courses. I also minored in Theater, and adore teaching people to speak confidently in public or in the work place.I strive to teach my students to be able to teach themselves. I was raised in a home that fostered academic excellence and I hope to do the same for my students. While I push my pupils to do their best, I am endlessly patient and caring, continually finding new ways to teach a student. I love watching children and adolescents grown and change and adore helping them to highlight their strong points while honing their weaknesses. My father was a high school English Teacher and encouraged me to evaluate my teachers from a young age. I tutored at the Skidmore College Writing Center for two years, working collaboratively with a wide range of people and learning styles. I also took courses in tutoring, critical analysis of fiction and theory, and dramatic literature. My teaching philosophy is focused on a student's growth and increasing his or her ability to work independently. First I explain and discuss the information and strategies the student needs. Then I point out instances where the student can use the strategies (and guide the student through them if need be). Lastly, I back off a bit, allowing the student to use strategies on his or her own. In the Writing Center, this process has given students greater confidence as they internalize knowledge and become increasingly able to use it on their own. Since I also majored in Theater, I also enjoy stage acting, singing in a chorus, or even dancing!

The relationship between our brains and senses has always intrigued me. Being a tri-lingual myself has pushed my interest in learning about language processes in the brain. During my undergraduate studies, I learned that those who cultivate multiple languages show greater activation in their left hemisphere, the seat of language production, than monolinguals. For this reason, I am particularly excited about passing my knowledge in French to students of all levels, helping them to discern the principles between their native and second languages. Personally, I studied in a French curriculum until the 9th grade before moving to the US. I also had the opportunity to study abroad where I studied French literature and Psychology. During that time, I was able to easily communicate with my host family and those that I met and even completed multiple assignments in the language. I hope that working with me will allow students to achieve the fluency that they strive for, thus increasing activity in their left hemisphere.

I am a Boston native and am happy to be back in the city after 4 years in Upstate NY for college and 1 year working in New York City. I am working full time as a Project Manager at a translation company in the Boston, and am really enjoying it so far! I graduated from Skidmore College in Saratoga Springs, NY, in May 2015 with a BA in International Affairs and a BA with Honors in German, and a minor in Government. I worked as a tutor for all levels of German and for introductory levels of Government throughout my time at Skidmore, and I'm continuing to tutor outside of college because it's something that I love to do! I'm fascinated with the German language and culture, and I love being able to help others learn it with me. I started my fascination in the 7th grade (about 11 years ago!), and have been lucky enough to spend time in Germany to continue my studies- for three weeks in high school, and for 6 months in college. I also know German can be very frustrating to learn. I don't think I actually started enjoying my studies until college, when everything just seemed to click. As a tutor, my goal is to help students get to this moment, and beyond. My love for the German language has also fueled my interest in the English language and in writing. I enjoy helping students organize their thoughts and ideas, streamlining them into a concise and thoughtful statement. It???s a skill to write coherently and powerfully, and it???s something that does not come naturally to many people, so this is something I enjoy practicing with my students. Besides my passion for German and writing, I have always loved to swim and have swam competitively from fifth grade through my four years at college. I also love the outdoors and will take any opportunity to be in the sun or go hiking. If the weather isn't the best, which is often the case in the Northeast, I enjoy sewing, knitting, and other 'do-it-yourself' crafts.

I am a doctor of physical therapy with a passion for helping others learn. On this platform, I tutor student physical therapists who are preparing to take the National Physical Therapy Examination. I started tutoring as an undergraduate at Skidmore College, where I earned my BA in Biology in 2017. I later tutored extensively at Wayne State University, where I earned my DPT in 2023. I assisted students in classes such as Basic Examination and Evaluation, Human Anatomy, Surface Anatomy, and Management of Orthopedic Patients. I also tutored students in need of remediation for their year-end comprehensive exams, which mimic the NPTE. I believe anyone who is capable of getting into a DPT program is capable of learning the material. In my experience, most SPTs who are struggling have only failed to modify their study strategies appropriately. This is an entirely treatable problem. While of course I will teach the material as needed, my focus as a tutor is in helping you figure out how you learn best. This is a combination of class attendance, note taking, study techniques, and test taking strategies. I believe in active learning whenever possible and utilize evidence based strategies such as spaced repetition. I am interactive with my students; for example, rather than lecturing at you, you tell me whatever you know on the subject and I help guide you to anything you may have missed. We then use that material for clinical correlations and decision making that so often come up on the NPTE. We will come up with study materials to use later on, make and answer practice questions, and practice different test taking techniques. I foster a shame-free environment and welcome mistakes as part of the learning process.

I'm Grace, and I'm here to help you find your written voice. Years of experience with diverse populations and skill sets equip me to guide writers to their highest work. I have a BA from Skidmore College in Religious Studies and Psychology, minoring in English and Honors Forum. In that time, I had six semesters of creative workshopping experience and over 400 hours teaching academic writing in the Philip Boshoff writing center. I won the Denise Marcil prize for Fiction in 2022, received departmental honors for my English capstone (a fiction collection of short stories), and was selected to present my work in both fiction and nonfiction at the Honors Academic Festival on two separate panels. All educational backgrounds, neurological profiles, and experience levels are welcomed and celebrated. Everyone has the words. Let's get them on the page.
