My favorite part of tutoring is what I call the light bulb moments. These are the moments when a topic makes sense to a student, and if we were in a cartoon, a light bulb would appear over their head. And this is usually the moment when students believe that I don't have more talent in the subject that them; I simply have more practice. I graduated with my Master of Science in Analytical Chemistry from Texas Tech University in 2011, and have tutored students in chemistry and math since 2002. In addition to tutoring, I have taught both as a TA and as an adjunct professor, at the University of Washington, Texas Tech, and the University of the Incarnate Word. I have taught chemistry labs (general, analytical, and nursing chemistry), general chemistry I and II, and first semester nursing chemistry. In my free time, I enjoy reading, crafting, and walking. I am currently working on making my first bed size quilt and have completed the San Antonio Rock n Roll half marathon twice.

I finished my college education in 2001 by earning my Ph.D. in economics from Texas Tech University. I have been a college-level economics teacher beginning in 1992 and have been teaching economics students since then. Over the years, I have learned much more about the economics discipline itself, how economists do economics. Throughout my career, I have treated all my students as adults, respecting their ideas and opinions, having learned as much from them as they have learned from me. Believing all learning is initiated from a point of knowledge, I want to know where students are in their programs, what are their strengths and weaknesses especially. I help them leverage their strengths in addressing their weaknesses. This in the end makes for a more confident student, someone who not only believes they can accomplish that which they face on their own, but one who will overcome their challenges and will accomplish their goals. This approach is what I have taken over my lifetime in regards my own learning needs and as lifetime learner. I attest this approach to life has been enjoyably fruitful.

I have worked as a high school Algebra I/Geometry teacher, a middle school math interventionist, and am currently teaching at a community college. I am a teacher who is motivated by results; I want all of my students to be able to see their progress in their grades so they can develop confidence in their skills. In addition, I also stress the importance of understanding the "why" behind mathematics rather than memorizing arbitrary math rules. When students get to understand the meaning behind why we use a rule or formula in math, we get to see a lightbulb light up in them. Once this occurs, we are able to truly begin problem solving, which is the heart of mathematics.

Voice/singing: I have taken private voice lessons for about 10 years. I also grew up participating in school choirs and theater. I have since been coaching people on different medias. My training is in classical and musical theater, but I also enjoy a variety of genres. History and study skills: As a student, I struggled with dyslexia and had to get help through tutoring and other support. I worked hard and accepted all the help that I could get. I was always surprised that I was on the honor roll despite my struggling. I started to notice that some of the best students also received assistance in their learning. Over time, I became one of the best students and was asked to tutor others. I learned that accepting help and aid wasn't weak, but was smart. Over the years I tested different ways of learning and studying to help me succeed. I now have a bachelors in history with a minor in anthropology, and I am earning my masters in museum studies. Other: I've worked for the Boy Scouts, teaching outdoor skills, such as climbing and archery. I have also interned with the Park Service, giving tours and ranger talks to visitors. I am very involved in the outdoors and love outdoor activities. I'm always willing to teach people about the outdoors, how to adventure safely and protect the natural environment and wildlife.

Prior to that, I was a group tutor for honors biology (known as a supplemental instructor), in which I created review packets and held sessions for the students. More than halfway through my advanced graduate program, I feel confident in my ability to stretch my teaching skills past biology and microbiology, into environmental science as well! The foundation of my teaching philosophy is to be patient and motivational. I encourage students to take their time and we can always attempt different learning methods or routes until the student truly understands the concept.
