I'm Akir! I graduated cum laude with a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology and minor in Political Science from the University of Pittsburgh. I started my collegiate career with the intent to be a nurse as I enjoy helping people, but it didn't take long for me to realize studying the material brought me more joy than trying to cure patients, as sometimes that's an impossible task. It was because of my challenging courses in nursing that I decided to delve deeply into understanding the mind and how we learn. By way of my peers and professors suggestions I began to research different learning styles and concluded if we gave children the opportunity to learn more creatively and privately their understanding of the fundamentals in any subject would increase. This is just some of the knowledge I bring to my sessions. I use each session as an opportunity to uniquely tailor the subject to the student as a way to reinforce what they already know.

I am currently a student at the University of Pittsburgh where I am obtaining my bachelors in biology. I plan to attend a Nurse Practitioner program after my completion to complete my masters and then my doctorate.I have many interest such as the study of egg peritonitis in chickens as well as raising them. In addition, I am an avid runner and played college soccer. I really am excited to share the beauty of science and education in general with you!

I find it very important to engage with my students. I may ask them more questions than they ask me. I do this in order to determine where any fundamental misunderstandings exist. I find that in most instances, confused students are unclear on one or two simple, yet important ideas. Clearing these up, and deliberately following their implications, can make students have a much better level of understanding while also feeling confident in their knowledge. This processes defines my style of teaching.

I am Phebean Davies, a recent graduate of the University of Pittsburgh with a biology degree. I like science, healthcare and art. I also like to help people and enable them to realize their dreams and aspirations and draw out a planned path to captivate them to attain their purpose for living.

I strive to engage all learners based on their unique learning style and ability level. Overall, I have an individualized approach to teaching and tutoring that gets results by building on the foundation of knowledge that each student possesses. I focus on each student's strengths and I mold my teaching to work on the difficulties/struggles that arise. The key to overcoming any obstacle is patience, drive, and hard work. At the end of the day, seeing a smile on a student's face when they realize that they are learning and have grasped a concept makes everybody's hard work worth it.Currently I am a General Studies College Instructor and Career Services Advisor and I have experience in teaching pre-k, kindergarten, and 5th grade. I have worked with special needs students and molded my teaching to their specific needs and abilities. My education background consists of a Bachelors in Elementary Education from the University of Pittsburgh and a Masters in Reading and Math Education from Walden University. I am currently working on my Doctorate in Education with a specialization in Curriculum, Instruction, and Assessment. I look forward to meeting you!

I am a self-confessed English grammar nerd! I love learning and teaching languages, and there is nothing I love more than helping my students reach their English-learning goals. I have a Doctor of Education in Curriculum and Instruction (with a concentration in Language, Literacy and Culture) from the University of Pittsburgh and a Master's of Science in Education in TESOL from Wilkes University (I also teach part-time in this program). I've spent the past 12+ years in TESOL (before that I was an architect), and I look forward to helping my students understand the complexities and beauty of English (grammar, pronunciation, and orthography just to name a few). I have taught ESL on three continents, and I am well-versed in intercultural communication. My research interests are oral corrective feedback, World Englishes, and language teacher identities (LTI). I also teach and tutor EAP, EBP, and EMP in addition to helping with test preparation, e.g., IELTS. When not immersed in the world of English teaching and research, I like to travel around the world, but I can also be found at home watching true crime documentaries, reading, or gardening. I'm trying to learn to like going to the gym, too!

I am a bioengineer who has experience working in the biotech startup industry. I received my Master of Science in Engineering in Bioengineering from the University of Pennsylvania and a Bachelor of Science degree in Neuroscience from the University of Pittsburgh. While at the University of Pittsburgh, I started to tutor my fellow peers in Engineering Physics I: Mechanics and Engineering Physics 2: Electricity & Magnetism, and it was then that I discovered my passion for tutoring. Seeing a student not only understand physics, but actually enjoy learning about it was easily the most rewarding aspect of tutoring. Their enjoyment led to success and further study of the material, and I was very happy to have contributed to that. From my experiences, I observed that a teaching philosophy based on constant questioning, student participation, and interdisciplinary learning provided the greatest enjoyment and success for students. Relating the material in a manner which the student understands has always been a priority of mine, and combining this approach with a logical, building-block type style has yielded strong results for me and the student. While I do tutor mathematics, usually ranging from Calculus I all the way to Differential Equations, I am most passionate about teaching physics. It is rewarding to see how a student who learns physics understands and appreciates the world around them on a deeper level. In the end, I wish to help students not only learn physics, but also enjoy learning physics, and I hope to spread this appreciation to all my students. Outside of work, I greatly enjoy going to museums, playing and watching all kinds of sports, hiking and other outdoor activities, reading philosophy, and playing guitar.
