After a successful career at McIntosh High School in Peachtree City, GA, I matriculated to the University of Georgia. Seeking a degree in Neuroscience, I am working my way to med-school and a bright future. Active in both the Honors program and Center for Undergraduate Research, I have developed a great work ethic which I hope to impart to my students! I've spent the past two summers teaching private swim lessons to children and adults throughout my community. Turning a person's goal into reality is the greatest thrill I've known! Similarly, I spent two semesters as a mentor at the Thomas Lay After-School Program in Athens, GA. There, I both tutored and befriended the children of the program. My favorite memory occurred during mandatory reading hours. A stubborn, apathetic boy refused to read any books. Rather than becoming frustrated, I asked him "If you could be any animal, what would you be?" I knew the library had a large section of zoology books, and hoped to pique his interest. Immediately, he responded "A fish!" The following weeks were filled with shark, octopus, and whale books. Mary currently lives in New York City and works as a consultant for an education non-profit. My name is Elias. I'm currently in grad school in Valencia, Spain working towards my phd in mathematics. My research is focused on partial and stochastic differential equations. Before starting grad school I was a teacher for 7 years and then a software engineer for 4. I've taught everything from basic algebra to graduate level math with almost everything in between. I have a dual physics and math degree from the university of Georgia and I have also taught pretty much all levels of physics up to graduate level physics. I also have extensive experience as a computer programmer both in scientific settings as well as engineering and software development. My teaching style is very much intuition first, details later. I have always had the philosophy that students who can build an intuition for what they're learning have a much easier time moving on to more advanced problems, or more advanced proofs/techniques (whatever their level may be). I first started enjoying chemistry and mathematics in high school. I noticed that students could enjoy and like a subject just based on who was teaching them. Through this, I try to incorporate different styles of teaching to imitate the styles that allowed me to enjoy these subjects. Some examples of this include providing explanations of diagrams and going into why this occurs instead of memorizing. I also provide scaffolding and support for problems and slowly remove them as the student becomes more proficient in the topic area. I believe that if a student enjoys learning a certain subject, no matter the difficulty of the subject itself, they will be able to understand it.I enjoy tutoring as it allows me to meet new people and help others understand a subject. My first experience tutoring involved helping 2-3 kids every week with any math or science related issue.
